Beleaguered Sri Lankan skipper Sanath Jayasuriya is likely to relinquish his post once the team returns to Colombo after the Sharjah Cup, the cricket board chief Anura Tennekoon has said.

"Jayasuriya has indicated that he would like to relinquish the captaincy but he has not officially informed us yet," Tennekoon said.

"On his return from Sharjah he is likely to indicate his stand," the BCCSL chief told BBC Sport.

Jayasuriya, currently with the Sri Lankan team in Sharjah, had said he felt the time had come to look to the future and hand over the leadership.

He had tendered his resignation soon after the World Cup but was persuaded to stay on by the sports minister.

Emphasising that he would be available for selection as a player, Jayasuriya said the board needed to plan for the 2007 World Cup.

The 33-year-old threw his weight behind Marvan Atapattu to take up his post.

"My personal thinking is that Marvan should take over - he has a lot of experience and has been vice-captain for some time now."

In Sharjah, Pakistan and Zimbabwe will play the final on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka is yet to find a successor for coach Dav Whatmore. Tennekoon said he was hoping to name a new coach by the end of April. 

One of the people the BCCSL has sounded out is former New Zealand Test player John Bracewell, who is coaching English county Gloucestershire.
