Letter of the Day

May 13, 2002
A New Hero??

In view of Ajay Ratra's unbeaten 93 at Antigua, one can expect the Indian press and the people to claim that he is the panacea to India's wicket-keeping problems.

Let us be sensible this time and give the poor lad a break. Let us be realistic and congratulate Ratra on his achievements and hope he exhibits the same grit as he did in Anitgua every time he dons Indian colours.

For long, our cricket team has been full of superstars, extremely talented cricketers who, I believe, don't try hard enough to win consistently. Let us not elevate the humble Haryana boy to extents of super stardom and hype as we are so prone to doing.

Instead, let him do his job well and let us hope that he plays successfully for India for some time. I do hope that other stalwarts in the team take a leaf out of his book and out their hand up when the chips are down.

Signed
Aravind Srinivas
