Indian women trounce England

Indian women scored a thumping nine-wicket victory over England in the second Hero Honda one-day international, reduced to 23 overs a side due to sluggish outfield, at the Lal Bahadur stadium in Hyderabad on Tuesday.

Electing to field, India restricted the visitors to 71 for 7 in their stipulated overs with medium pacer and woman of the match Jhulan Goswami ripping through the England top order claiming three wickets for eight runs.

Chasing a modest total, at an asking rate of three per over, Indian openers Anju Jain and Anjum Chopra, though troubled initially by medium pacer Lucy Pearson, gave a steady start before Anju (10) was run out.

Maithili Raj joined skipper Anjum (36 no) and the two made the required runs with 2.4 overs to spare and helped India take 2-0 lead in the five-match series.

Overnight heavy rains had dampened the outfield and there were pools of water all around at the scheduled time of 9.30 am.

After three inspections, it was finally decided to start play at 2.10 pm.

The hosts won the first match at Chennai. The third match will be played at the same venue here tomorrow.
