Statistical highlights of 1st Test at Delhi (1st day)

Mohandas Menon

** This was Kumble's first Test match at this venue since his all-ten wicket haul against Pakistan in February 1999. Kumble did not play against Zimbabwe in at this venue in November 2000 due to injuries. Interestingly it took him 22.2 overs to take his next wicket (Streak) after his historic feat against Pakistan.

** Zimbabwe in successive matches at this venue, have lost a wicket without a run on the board on the opening day to Javagal Srinath. Stuart Carlisle who was dismissed off the fourth ball of the match in this game, emulated Grant Flower who was dismissed in a similar manner by Srinath at this very ground when these two teams met on November 18, 2000. However unlike Carlisle, Flower was dismissed only in the fifth over of the day.

** Carlisle's duck was his fifth of his career in 27 matches. It was his second while leading the side. Andy Flower and Alistair Campbell are the other Zimbabwean captains to register a duck. However Carlisle becomes the first Zimbabwean captain to do so on two occasions. His first such duck came in the second innings against Bangladesh at Dhaka last November.

** Andy Flower's 92 was his first score in the nineties in Test matches. His previous highest double figure score was the 86 he made against Sri Lanka at Bulawayo in November 1999.

** Andy has now an aggregate of 522 runs at this venue in three matches. Only Dilip Vengsarkar (671 runs in 8 matches) and Sunil Gavaskar (668 in 9) have scored more at the Feroz Shah Kotla.

** The only other score in the nineties by a Zimbabwe batsman against India was the 96 by Grant Flower also this venue in March 1993.

** Anil Kumble's wicket of Streak was his 32nd at this venue in four matches. He equals the venue record of most wickets held by Kapil Dev who also has 32 wickets in 9 matches.

** Dion Ebrahim (82 not out), playing in his 12th match, bettered his highest score of his career. His previous bests of 71 was achieved by him on three occasions - against West Indies at Bulwayo in July 2001, and against South Africa at Harare and Bulawayo respectively in September 2001. For the record, his previous highest score in an away Test was the 41 he made against Bangladesh at Chittagong last November. Incidentally, Ebrahim who has never scored a hundred in his first-class career (his highest being 90) has a good chance of doing so on the second day.
