Australia PM's XI beat England

December 10, 2002 20:18 IST

Former Australia Test batsman Mark Waugh smashed a quick 42 to lead his Prime Minister's XI invitational side to a four-wicket win over England on Tuesday in a further blow to the touring side's morale.

Opening batsman Marcus Trescothick, who captained England in place of the injured Nasser Hussain, said it was a bad loss for a team already lacking in confidence.

England, who have not won a game on their Australia tour, were bowled out for 152 in 40.4 overs in the match at Canberra's Manuka Oval reduced to 42-overs-a-side because of rain.

The Australia Prime Minister's XI, captained by 37-year-old Waugh, reached 153 for six in 31.4 overs.

"The wicket wasn't that bad. We weren't up to it today. We weren't good enough," Trescothick told reporters.

"I thought about it while we were batting, just trying to put my finger on it. We need a bit more self-belief maybe.

"There's got to be a reason why. We just need to assess it quick."

The triangular limited-overs international tournament, which includes Sri Lanka, starts on Friday when Australia host England in Sydney.

England have already lost the five-Test Ashes series after the first three matches.

'NOT DELIVERING'

"It's a bad loss for us and we didn't need it right now," Trescothick said.

"To be honest when we're in the change rooms and doing our preparation and warm-ups and going into games we feel very positive about what we're doing.

"We're just not delivering on the pitch when it matters. When the pressure is on... we're not producing the goods.

"That's the bottom line. It's just when we're on the pitch we're not up to it."

Trescothick won the toss and batted and was third man out for 21 as England slumped to 47 for three. Only uncapped spin bowler Gareth Batty (29) and wicketkeeper Chris Read, who was unbeaten on 33, bettered his score.

Batty and Read, both called up from England's academy squad based in Adelaide, added 61 for the eighth wicket after the touring team were in the embarrassing position of 85 for seven.

Pace bowlers Paul Rofe (3-34) and Mick Lewis (3-22), who replaced fellow Victoria bowler Shane Harwood in the team, were the leading wicket-takers for Waugh's side.

Former lifesaver Lee Carseldine, who took 2-7 with his left-arm medium-pacers, top-scored for the home side with 46 including five boundaries while Waugh clipped six fours and one six in his 46-ball stay.

England pace bowler James Kirtley took 3-27 as the Prime Minister's XI lost three early wickets for 37 before steadying.
