Brearley to groom Indian sports managers

M Chhaya in Kolkata | December 04, 2002 22:29 IST

Former English cricket captain Mike Brearley will teach students in a sports management course, to be offered by an Indian management school.

Brearley, whose leadership skills are legendary, is joining the technical advisory committee of the one-year sports management diploma course of the Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management.

Indian sports personalities like cricketer Sunil Gavaskar and hockey Olympians Vece Paes and Leslie Claudius will be the other members of the advisory committee.

Though Brearley has agreed to be on the advisory board for now, he is expected to eventually take up the responsibility of a visiting professor, an IISWBM faculty member said.

Gavaskar is also being requested to take up a similar assignment.

Brearley has strong connection with India because his in-laws stay in this country.

Renowned British sports consultant Irvin Morris will teach the students methods of sports administration and staging of sports events.

The course, the first of its kind, will also deal with sports' links with insurance and law.

The course is slated to being in the 2003 session.
