Faisal Shariff
Prem Panicker :
Okay, hey, good morning/afternoon/evening all....
Prem Panicker :
Hi all, howdy
Prem Panicker :
Yes, well, the fact that we continue to follow the team's fortunes is essentially a triumph of hope over expectation
amit1 :
hopefully people don't b**** on ganguly today for his batting, he saved us in the last game
Prem Panicker :
Hey, when a player does well, he gets the kudos that is due, if he does badly, would he not similarly get criticism?
abhijeet :
Hi Prem...hows this line up...Sehwag, Bangar, D, ST, SG, Laxman, Patel, Kumble, Bhajji, Zahreer & Nehra?
Prem Panicker :
Well, for starters, Bangar opening will have you 0/1 in no time, at this level. And given our defensive field settings, he will be too easy to milk when it comes England's turn to bat. Secondly, Nehra is not exactly up there, form-wise -- proving too costly, and every indication is he has a structural problem, not just in the mind. He's adjusted his run up and it's killed his bowling. Too risky I would think, if he is to be one of only two frontline seamers
amit1 :
prem i just hope he gets the well desreved applause today.
Prem Panicker :
If he deserves it in the coming test,he will get it, why wouldnt he?
Prem Panicker :
*grin* Statistically? The home side has won 13 Tests in Trent Bridge and the visiting side has won 14. *L* Does that tell you anything at all?
superstarksa :
Prem.... ESPN Star has a big headline that says all the guys from the present team have been ignored fior the ICC trophy.. this is temporary.. but anyways...ur comments...
Prem Panicker :
Well, I don't know who is ignoring who. Another way of putting it is that the players have ignored the ICC -- and the BCCI, come to think of it. And why the heck not?
abhijeet :
Prem..would you prefer some other lineup???
Prem Panicker :
Well, my ideal is close to the one I mentioned before start of series -- Dravid to open with Sehwag. Failing that, Sachin to open, with VS. VVSL to bat three to keep the momentum going; Dravid below that to ensure against a collapse if the top three hiccup, Ganguly below Dravid, then Patel
PPTisback :
Prem Is PPT a bad name your site gives me following error "The username you have specified is either in use or not permitted. Please log in with a different username"
Prem Panicker :
It could be a bug, is all
superstarksa :
Prem/Faisal.... Yohanan for Nehra then... now that Agarkar has "cemented" his place ?
Prem Panicker :
Actually, the reason why I didn't talk of the bowling options was that it makes no sense to think about it until you see what the darn pitch is like. For all you know it might be the kind that plays slow and low, in which case i'd rather use an accurate yohannan than an agarkar whose pace, the only weapon he has, is irrelevant. again, i would go two spin, in such a case. So.... picking batsmen, you can do pretty much on theory. Bowlers, you have to look at the ground and what it will do
PPTisback :
Prem, Read your article about the ICC contract dispute. Why these guys (BCCI & ICC) are trying to F*** up with such a beautyful game. Don't they have any thing else to do? Players have struggled a lot to come this far in the sports and they have all rights to earn big bucks through all leagal means after all every person who know how to hold the bat and ball does not becomes SRT, SCG, RD & VS. In my openion insted of ICC all test playing countries should appoint a person ( preferably ex crickter ) and they should manage the game insted of some bunch of fools what is your take on this?
Prem Panicker :
Yes well, that is the logical thing to do -- but will it happen? NO, just like the BCCI wont be run by professional cricketers. The admin needs to keep its paws on the money, whether at the national or ICC level, so they are not about to hand over charge to others
lprabu :
Prem: I believe Dalmiya has some underhand dealing in this whole contract episode. What do u think?
Prem Panicker :
I don't want to speculate about "underhand dealings". As far as I can see, though, Dalmiya was in charge -- along with his best friend David Richards -=- when the contract was drawn up in 2000. From that point of view, I find it strange that he is completely silent on when this clause was added, by whom, and why
amit1 :
prem, what if aus,WI,SA,send b rate teams, will the sponsors pull out of the tournament?
Prem Panicker :
The sponsors will definitely demand a renegotiation. I dont put up 550 million to see second rate stars performing before half empty stadia. The ICC has in fact opened up a whole mare's nest -- now, pretty much whatever you do, someone or the other is aggrieved, and there could be breach of contract suits flying all over the place
lprabu :
Also, what about Niranjan Shah saying "they are not kids" but at the same time not recognizing a spokesman nominated by the same "adult" players!!
Prem Panicker :
Yes well, when I was a kid dad never consulted me when taking decisions, once I became 18, he consulted me all the time. I wonder how Shah treats his kids? You don't consult them, you treat them like kids, then you say they are not kids? Duh!
Anuradha :
Prem, read mithali got a 10 pound award for his double hundred world record inning.Any comments on her or her reward
Prem Panicker :
I wish I had seen that innings. Actually, I did make a mental note to try and see our team play -- unfortunately, given the amount of time i spend on men's cricket and now here in the US, I am pretty much clueless about the new lot. Earlier I used to watch -- Shanta, Diana Eduljee and that set, and quite impressive some of them were
PPTisback :
Prem Why you have not posted last chat script on rediff.. I could find it only after lot of effort in rediff
Prem Panicker :
Catch Faisal for that. *L*
lprabu :
BTW Prem: That analysis you guys published about the bowling being "cannon fodder" didn't really support that statement!
Prem Panicker :
No? 13 or 14 innings, India's bowlers concede 400 plus 9 times, the only two occasions we bowl someone out for around 300 we win, we concede 600 plus what, two, three times -- surely that has to tell you a story?
Hitler :
Much is being written about Laxman (the best batsman per current form ) coming at number three. But Australia has time and again proved that this idea is too conservative and outdated.Over the last 10 years we have seen the most successful team send the most in-form and reliable bat at number six.. Eg: Australia ( 1990-1995)- A R BorderAustralia (recent years)- S R WaughIn fact most of the matches in the 90's have tilted towards the Aussies after the number six came to crease. What do you think ?
Prem Panicker :
Laxman at three is not because of consistency -- it is more because he bats in a fashion that puts runs on the board quick, and that is what opens up winning chances. If you look at the Aus lineup, you would compare Waugh not to Laxman but to say Dravid. And Laxman would be more a Ponting, a Mark Waugh -- in the sense of rapid scoring. Which is why he is backed to bat high. BTW, if you look back at our win against Aus at home, that is in fact what made the difference -- not that he played time, but that he scored at a breathless pace
vivek :
hey prem agarkar is useless!man how cud he even be picked...he screwed up even in the game against essex.17 runs in the first over....ridiculous..he has to be dropped..wat say..and what abt the bowling line-up for the test
Prem Panicker :
Yes, but if you notice, at the rate people are proving to be "useless" -- I am not disagreeing with the statement that he messed up, in fact I keep pointing that out about AA -- we are running out of options
AP :
Prem you think if they go with Bangar (for the purpose of bowling), than Das will not be picked?
Prem Panicker :
Hard to see BOTH Bangar and Das make the lineup, no? Who are you going to drop? Jaffar, yes. But who else?
Rishi :
Hi Prem/Faisal! What do you people think about the choice of wicket keeper? Especially now when patil has proved his worth and made good contribution with bat also
Prem Panicker :
Is what I said in the last two chats -- Patel could be the keeper we have been waiting for. technically correct, plus can bat sound. The point I kept making is, dont treat him like we treated keepers in thr ecent past -- let the boy get space to groom himself and grow, without expecting instant results
superstarksa :
hey Prem/Faisal... u pulled that article by Shoba Warrier abt the "Cricket Ganesha" from the server ? Btw.. is this thing in chennai ?
Prem Panicker :
It should be in the archives, pal
Chander :
Hi prem, why does ICC makes an ass of itself time and again?
Prem Panicker :
Well, see, if you are an ass per se, then you can't help being one consistently, can you? The ICC is a body that is ridiculously structured, badly administered. Always has been. So what else do you expect anyway?
amit1 :
if kumble comes in tomorrow and the weahter being hot and dry, who is out?
Prem Panicker :
Nehra
anuradha_d :
Prem, read mithali got a 10 pound award for his double hundred world record inning.Any comments on her or her reward
Prem Panicker :
Hey, Anuradha, I did respond to this. :-) One thing, though -- ten pounds?????? I didnt see that, if it is a fact, then whoever announced it needs to be kicked. Hard. In some restaurants you tip the steward more than that
sreesub :
hey faisal/prem u okay with bcci being only board to pick alternate team
Prem Panicker :
No
biggie :
How do you think the pitch would play a role at Headingly?
Prem Panicker :
Ooops, that is something I cant say without seeing the pitch, nah, boss? :-)
AP :
Prem, since Banger and Das BOTH can not be in, I say give Bangar a try (in place of Jaffer) and pick Kumble instead of Nehra. This will give 3 seamers and 2 spinners. I think we need 5 bowlers.
Prem Panicker :
And ensure that yet again, our opening sucks?
Slash :
Why dont we groom Yuvraj to be FUTURE CAPTAIN??
Prem Panicker :
Woops, where did this come from? Yuvraj has to make it into the team first.
PPTisback :
Prem Why you have not posted last chat script on rediff.. I could find it only after lot of effort in rediff
Prem Panicker :
HEY, STOP POSTING THE SAME DARN THING. I responded tot his
aru :
prem, wat do u think about viv richards' opinion that tendulkar is under trmendous pressure at the crease. i tend to agree with him
Prem Panicker :
Yes, well, Viv would spot it wouldn't he? And he is right, Sachin basically is trying to do too much, he does need to chill a bit. Showed some sign of doing just that in the second innings of the last test -- and he generally does tend to work his way out of whatever is bugging him, so
ANIL :
HiPrem!Shouldn't we pick 11 batsmen which will insure saving the test than wining or loosing!(with all due respect to bowlers)!!!!
Prem Panicker :
11 batsmen wont insure saving the test. if the opposition wins the toss and bats first, for instance, they will put up some 800 in under two days, and then even 22 batsmen will be under pressure
rahulnair :
dear prem, i avidly read the piece about setting a field for bajji like for Pras, but then how did bajji take 32 wickets in india under the same captain?
Prem Panicker :
Do check the videos of those games if you ahve them -- you will see that almost all the fielders now absent, were in fact on duty then. i dont mean names, i mean positions. he bowled to slip, gully, silly point, short square, leg slip. and if a fielder had to be dropped, it was generally short square, but not leg slip
tango :
Does it really make sense not to have kaif n yuvraj in the test team..whats the logic behind picking players for test or one days..how do u differentiate tht they can play test or only one days?
Prem Panicker :
Do they deserve ot be in the test team? Yes. Why are they not there? Add that to the list of about 1000 whys we have been asking, this last decade, about the policies of our selectors
cricketfan :
Hello Prem, Here is my line up, in that order of batting. also considering 3rd test pitch will help fast bolwers. please comment.1. Virendra Sehwag.2. SS Das.3. VVS Laxman.4. Rahul Dravid.5. Sachin Tendulkar.6. Saurav Ganguly.7. Parthiv Patel.8. Harbhajan Singh.9. Zaheer Khan.10. Ashish Nehra.11. Tinu Yahanan.
Prem Panicker :
WEll, if you are sure the pitch will help pace -- consistently, throughout the five days -- then it seems a fair lineup. only, both nehra and agarkar have been underperforming. So if you have to pick between two bad ones, who do you pick?
Chinu :
Why is it that only Indian bowlers cannot perform overseas?
Prem Panicker :
Ummm.... lemme see, that is a bit like asking how come Aus bowlers never seem to do well in INdia for instance. The thing is, given the conditions we play our domestic season in, our bowlers just do not KNOW how to bowl on more competitive, quicker, harder pitches.
Raj :
i think india needs to bowl very well if they have any chance of winning the test and the contribution of the tail is very imp.dont you think so?
Prem Panicker :
Of course. Goes without saying :-) Unlike the tail, which goes without scoring. *g*
jeevan :
do you think we need to get yohanan in the place of agarkar or nehra? or if it is necessary whom should we replace?
Prem Panicker :
WE need to first see if thge pitch supports fast bowling. If yes, then despite his erratic record, I would pick Agarkar ahead of Nehra, who just now is even more erratic, and yohannan as the third bowler
santo :
Laxman honestly has done very little in the last year or so....he has been scoring those 30s and the 40s ....his postition heeds to be under pressure - unforutunately many people (including dear old Prem) think he is doing great!!
Prem Panicker :
Very little? Then the others have done less -- Laxman was your top scorer in the West Indies, by quite a margin.
Padmanaban :
dear prem/faisal, why doesnt BCCI make our players read rediff's cricket columns as a compulsory practice to know and sort out most of the mistakes and problems? For example, the recent article on field-placement for Harbhajan..
Prem Panicker :
*L* Thanks much for the implicit compliment. Hell, the board has to first make the players listen to the damn coach they have.
NumeroUno :
Prem - Can you answer my Qs too
Prem Panicker :
Of course. What are they?
sreesub :
why cant our fast bowlers khan/nehra/agarkar be sent to a long camp/academy to improve. persistent cricket without training shall finish them
Prem Panicker :
Ah... another very good question. When have we ever sent our quicks to academies? The only ones who did go were Sri and Venky -- and they went at their own expense, with sponsorship they found for themselves. The board doesnt have time to think of these things
RahulP :
We need a 5th bowler. Even Ganguly recognises that and maybe that's the reason that he gave Sehwag such a long bowl in the last game. My question is how come Ganguly does not bowl more than what he does in Test Matches... the conditions should suit his style of bowling ?
Prem Panicker :
It would, yes. But he looks rusty as hell, I wonder if it is lack of practise.
vnmenon73 :
What do u think the palyers should do regarding the new rule by ICC to sign contract
Prem Panicker :
That is simple. Refuse to sign. Period
superstarksa :
superstarksa says, Prem...Ur analysis abt Harbhajan's bowling and what finally happened was cool...Now.. Did Ganguly foist the field on Harbhajan or was Harbhajan plain afraid to set that kind of field ? I have seen bolwers do this (set a defensive field) from their first ball..cos they are worried abt getting hit for boundaries and sixes...
Prem Panicker :
The bowler can only ask, he can't set the field. What does happen is, as a bowler, I ask for a field and if I am not given it, I look at the field I have been given. If it gives me wicket-taking opportunities I go for it. If it doesn't, then I go uh oh, this is trouble, and start bowling defensively because to attack without teeth will mean a split lip
kri :
Okay, third try in getting a reply from Prem (gosh, email was so much better.. you always reply). Do you think Sachin should come at No.3 ahead of Dravid is Shewag stays? That way there will be a lot of pressure on the English bowlers..
Prem Panicker :
Not necessarily, that is why Laxman is the best option at three. Imagine the added pressure if sehwag fires, then laxman does, and there is still sachin to follow
kamina :
TENDULKAR SHOULD RETIRE NOW
Prem Panicker :
Yes he should. Next statement please?
Guest123 :
Why can't the indian bowlers bat ?? Don't yuu think then need to be given more batting practice ???
Prem Panicker :
*grin* Friend, way things are going, the better question is why cant indian bowlers bowl. But yeah, you have a point and no, they dont get enough.
vshan :
Prem/Faisal - with Headingley being a traditional seamer pitch but with the weather conditions being hot over the past few days, does it not make sense to pick 3seam/2spin bowling attack so that we dont feel a bowler short if the conditions go againt our expectations? That being the case, the only option left would be have Dravid/Ganguly open the innings with Sehwag and VVSL at No.3 if Dravid opens. This would allow the team to play 5 bowlers and Ratra/Patel (preferably the latter) as the wicketkeeper. What do you guys think?
Prem Panicker :
Yes, well, five bowlers is theoretically your best option -- but if you notice the way we pick our playing eleven, we don't have the guts to go in a batsman short, we in fact go the other way and try and bat deep simply because we dont think five batsmen, superstars or no, are enough
cricketmama :
answer my question prem!!!!!! why cant kumble try FAST bowling?
Prem Panicker :
Oh geez. Good question. He could, Sri could try leg spin, Agarkar could try skittles. I mean, how in heck do I respond to that, buddy? Prolly because he does not want to?
Ajit :
If michael vaughan can take 2 surprise wickets, why ganguly is not trying sachin as bowler more regularly?
Prem Panicker :
Another very good questoin, to which the only person who can give the answer is Ganguly himself. I thought Sachin wsa underbowled last time, when he in fact was bowling very well
PPTisback :
Prem / Faisal what you say about Patel. It may be too early to form an openion about him but please comment on his technique and all. I haven't seen him playing that is why I want to have your expert comments.
Prem Panicker :
I saw only a very brief portion of the Test -- that was when Patel was keeping, actually, and I liked what I saw. His balance is good, his glove positioning, and the way he gets up out of his crouch, is all technically correct -- which is more than I can say about some of the other blokes on view recently
aru :
i think dravid, tendulakar and ganguly should be asked to drop out of the test series too if they disagree to sign the ICC CONTRACT
Prem Panicker :
On what grounds? By that token, why are you talking of only the INdian players? If you notice, no cricketer around the world is prepared to sign -- surely that should tell you that it is not the problem of just three players?
Maulik :
What do you you think about Robin Singh, if we play with him for couple of years more, specially until worldcup. because everybody know this indian team wants All-rounders badly, as Kapil also emphasized on this many times. To me, preparing Retinder singh sodhi is also a good option.
Prem Panicker :
Jesus Christ, er, why not Manoj Prabhakar and Kapil Dev for a couple years more? Where on earth do you see Robin fitting into the side at this point in time?
anant :
Prem, do you think Ramesh will get a chance in the near future ? Kris Srikanth feels that TNCA is not backing up TN players
Prem Panicker :
I dont know, given the politics in TN cricket, whether Ramesh will get that chance, but I do believe he and Sehwag would be our best bet at the top
Cfan :
Why do the players not find a savy lawyer who can then represent them with the BCCI. I think that's the way for them to go as opposed to fielding R. Shastri or themselves. What do you think?
Prem Panicker :
Actually, that is not a bad idea. But the thing is Ravi can be a very good players' spokesman -- it is precisely his ability to hold the line that ensured he was passed over for captaincy, the board didn't want a captain who could take a tough line
aggy :
For the Advertising Ambush fiascoIt is a shame that Indian players have nominated a person like Ravi Shastri to represent them. I will not be surprised if he bags the award for "the most selfish Indian Player of the century". How can Shastri speak to the Indian board when he has his vested interest as a representative of worldtel.
Prem Panicker :
The vested interest part is fair enough. But how he played cricket has nothing to do with his ability or lack of it to talk on behalf of cricketers. The players probably picked him because they figured he unlike some other high profile names wont then do a backdoor deal with the bcci and sell the players down the river
venravi10 :
Our Batting is waht is talked about here. When our bowling is what is giving problem. IS there annyone who thinks in my line. How shall we get 20 english wickets with what we have??
Prem Panicker :
*LOL* That is a superb question -- unfortunately, there is no magic wand solution. Bowl the right line, field in the right places, take your catches, keep pressure on, dont give free runs.... it is mostly about doing the little things right
Padmanaban :
Dear Prem, if we start coaching Rahul Dravid for wicket-keeping (since he seems to have answers to any type of bowling anywhere in the world), won't we have him as a complete wicket-keeper for tests also?
Prem Panicker :
Yes and we will kill him as a batsman
David :
PREM , IS THERE NE REASON Y THERE IS NO TIMESTAMP ON MEDIA REPORTS AT MOST O THE SITES ? & WAT IS THE DETAILED DIFFERENCE IN A REPORT & MEDIA RELEASE ?
Prem Panicker :
A report is done by a journalist. A media release is by an organisation. For instance, the BCCI can issue a media release -- which is just a statement, a unilateral one. A report would take that statement, examine it, ask questions, talk to others -- and build the story
lprabu :
If Dravid and Sehwag open, with Laxman, Tendulkar, Ganguly, Parthiv and Agarkar as the "all-rounder" to follow, India can then have 4 other bowlers.....will this happen?
Prem Panicker :
NO it wont. It would be a good idea... but I dont see it happen
Guest123 :
Prem, what are you views for the remaining test matches ? Will india be able to level it or winthe series or loose the series ??
Prem Panicker :
*sigh* You know what? The last two, three series we went on, we always had good chances of winning. And we always lost. Trying to predict what this team will do is impossible, I would rather try for "when will the world come to an end". :-)
aru :
the 3 should be dropped based on the treatment srinath recieved from bcci. please read my previous question and u will know the logic behind that
Prem Panicker :
Huh? I thought you were talking of the contract? Because Srinath was badly treated by the BCCI, three other players should be dropped? Not the BCCI itself? I hope this doesn't become law -- could turn out that a colleague is badly treated by someone here in chat and I get sacked from REdiff because of it.
Prasad :
Prem, Do you reckon Tinu should play instead of Nehra
Prem Panicker :
If we are going three bowlers, then yes
AnilKumble :
prem..justnow ravi shastri said"we welcome the ICC desicion" does that mean players are ready to play with the existing contract with ICC for champions trophy
Prem Panicker :
It means that the ICC decision to review the tersm of the contract and not enforce it, as is, for the World Cup, is welcome. Which it is. The other is a different question -- the players, and not just Indian ones, would need to check with their sponsors and see that they dont get sued if they sign the contract.
satheesh :
Why shouldn't our board advertise something like "Anyone who can bowl more than 140 km/hr in India can show up at this place" in rediff!! Why not rediff do it?!! We might get hold of soem good fast bowlers in our country!!!
Prem Panicker :
*laughing* Actually, yes, why not? Sort of like the matrimonial ads: Wanted, urgently: Someone who looks like Imran Khan, bowls like Michael Holding, and bats like Botham. Ill treatement by BCCI guaranteed, only people with high stress thresholds need apply. Send photo and certificate of speed
Uncleram :
Prem, Do we have any quality leg spinners?
Prem Panicker :
Haven't seen anyone around lately, frankly, but I must confess it is getting on for close to two years that I ahven't really been able to follow domestic cricket
PremPanicker :
FAISAL AND PREM GO OUT AND HAVE A CUP OF BEER DAMMIT IT..THAT WAY YOU WUD NOT BORE US....
Prem Panicker :
Well, friend, if you went and had that beer you wouldn't be bored
Ajit :
prem, you have seen muralitharan very closely, do you think he chucks?
Prem Panicker :
Ooops! Put it this way -- I think a sport, any sport, has rules. If for whatever reason you cannot adhere to those rules, then you shouldn't play. I might want to do the pole vault, but the rules are specific. I can't then say hey, I have a shoulder problem, Ic ant take the strain vaulting puts on it so I'll use a ladder
AnisS :
Hello Prem, Apart from all the important discussions going on right now, about the ICC controversy and the openers, I have one earnest request for you... I know you might have been asked about this by other readers in the past, and maybe in this chat also, but my request is please write more CRICKET articles on Rediff. I can say that I was addicted to your cricket columns in the past. But you stopped writing, so :-( I would wait for your post-match analysis as eagerly as I would wait to read the match result. Hope you start writing more often on REDIFF.
Prem Panicker :
Well, as of now I am not in a position to do match reports -- i dont get to see the whole game continuously here in the US. But I will be writing columns.
tej :
I have been in the US for quitesometime.. I didn't get to see Soccer world cup being talked bug..but county/school level soccer hits headlines every day..This kind of media support at lower leels for Cricket in India,Imagine the potential that can be unearthed? Prem your views on that...
Prem Panicker :
Oh absolutely, plus here in theUS I notice there is a system in place, to find, groom, train, promote, look after young talent from a really young age.
LateralThinker2 :
POSTING THIS 3rd TIME.......We should have cricket leagues in our country owned by businessmen / companies who take care of the team's needs, take care of the fields, prepare pitches, oraganize tournaments and pupularize/market the events. They should also exchange players from South Africa and Australia. This way we will have professional leagues and our players get exposure on different tracks. Same way players from South Africa will also get experience playing here. In other words, I am saying DUMP BCCI AND LIBERALIZE CRICKET.!!!!
Prem Panicker :
I agree about professional sports clubs. Owned by businessmen or whoever has the bread to do it.
vinhb :
Prem I want to know your opinion on whether the players should form a new world body to control and manage cricket professionally what do you think ?
Prem Panicker :
You mean ideally? I think players should use this to get a considerable more say in how the game is managed, for tarters
PremKaDost :
Prem, it appears that 'playing' has become a sort of occupational hazard for our celebrities.
Prem Panicker :
*L* Wasn't it always? Between the official parties and the night life?
vshan :
Prem/Faisal - With all that is going on, dont you think the Indian team will be totally distracted and play poor cricket? No other board seems to be pushing their players to sign the contract. Why only the BCCI?
Prem Panicker :
Well, they are poor pros if they allow this to distract them. Dont forget, england players are equally in the middle of the row
sam628 :
Is there a special technique of getting ur question noticed by Prem or Faisal?
Prem Panicker :
Yes. Ask it.
rv :
Prem, If the Pitch favors spin and India go in with bajju and kumble what will ur fast bowling combination be based on the performance so far??
Prem Panicker :
If it is a true blue spinning track? Then I would drop both Nehra and Agakrar. Teh first for form, the second for form and the fact that his pace is not relevant on this track. And go with Zahir and Yohannan
kuntamukkala :
Sunil GAVASKAR is still a better choice than SS DAS and JAFFAR put together...Atleast he stay there at the other end, and block teh balls...Remember he has teh technique...while Sehwag can blast teh balls...not much running to do...
Prem Panicker :
Yes. But Sunil Gavaskar is 50-plus, not sure he wants to play. :-)
sameep :
, what do u think accordin to your view shud the senior players do if the bcci doesnt back off? especially bout the younger players who are just into the arena?
Prem Panicker :
I think the senior players should stick to their stand. They can publicly tell the younger players that if they want to play it is okay with them. But if the players give in now, they will have to keep giving in. This showdown had to happen at some point -- now that it has, the players should force a situation where they are no longer taken completely for granted, like so much chattel
SaveIndianCricket :
DO YOU THINK GANGULY USES HIS SPINNERS VERY WELL?? HE has been ignoring what has been traditionally our strengths....
Prem Panicker :
I dont, actually.
dkreddy :
Hi Prem,Do you think Bangaru should be given a chance???
Prem Panicker :
Bangaru who? *L* Actually, I dont know about "giving a chance" -- I dont generally want to pick a team on the "hey, poor kid, let's give him a lollipop" principle.
gurtej :
helo helo
Prem Panicker :
Uh... is this the start of the telephone dhun mein hasnewali song? :-)
jj :
why not bangar? is tinu better than bangar.. seems like bangar is a better batsman too and bowled well in the games...
Prem Panicker :
Tinu bowls the far fuller length, from a greater height, making him more difficult to consistently score off than Bangar, is the main reason why. Hey, if I am picking a bowler, I tend to look at the bowling. I dont pick a batsman because he can bowl, why the heck would I pick a bowler simply because he can allegedly bat?
testlover :
Why is Ganguly not bowling at all? Is he injured?he did not bowl a single over in the Essex game. He would be pretty effectice boling a couple of 5 over spells each day. Between shewag and Tendulkar they can bowl 10-12 overs. That brings the workload down to 70 overs on the regulars
Prem Panicker :
Yes, boss, the point has been made ad nauseum, actually, even on REdiff, as to why SG doesn't bowl more, the lord knows. Could be disinclination, could be he feels some strain somewhere....
umm :
Prem,Don't you see India only adopt a draw statagy in the 2ed test,Is it going to be happen again tomorrow?
Prem Panicker :
I hope not. Even drawing the next two tests -- assuming you have what it takes to decide to play for a draw on day one and actually pull it off over five days -- will only mean another series defeat, how does that help?
DeArtagnan :
What was your inspiration to take up cricket writing, given that it is as a writer put, a game played by 13 fools in flannel, or some such?
Prem Panicker :
The inspiration was my editor -- who when the world cup 1996 came, looked around, found no one in sight, and issued a diktat that I had to do the coverage. *L*
vinhb :
Prem I think that the ICC and BCCI are trying to control the players (who are the people who entertain the public and thus generate revenue ) so why not then the player serve their own interests and instead of these honorary bodies have some proefessional bodies manage World Cricket ?
Prem Panicker :
Well, it is in theory a good thought, in practise there are difficulties. In India, for instance, the BCCI owns the grounds -- where would you play?
AP :
OK THIS IS MY LINEUP: Das, Sehwag, Dravid, Tendu, Laxman, Gangs, Patel, Zaheer, AA, Harbhajan, Tinu/Anil (depending on the track).
Prem Panicker :
Sounds good, not much to complain of there
Rocky :
Do you mean to tell me that we have no keepers at all in India and that we have to take people out of school and ask them to keep wickets?
Prem Panicker :
Well um... we once took a batsman out of school, just over 11 years back
Atul :
Faisal/Prem, it looks like any of the Indian players currently in Engl*nd will not be picked for ICC cup, so will the board ask Kaif, Mongia to return India as their only purpose to remain with team was to stay match fitfor ICC cup. This is my 10th posting and none has been answered yet
Prem Panicker :
Atul, what the board will do, only the board knows. It is an option the board might consider. Then again, Kaif and Mongia have been with this team -- is moot if they will now go against the unity nd sign
trnandakumar :
I think Mr.Dalmiya and other BCCI members have got money from ICC and doing this. What is the need for them to do so?
Prem Panicker :
Um. You, friend, first say you "think" something, then ask why they are doing this. Not fair -- you do not accuse where you cannot prove
Rocky :
Do you mean to tell me that we have no keepers at all in India and that we have to take people out of school and ask them to keep wickets?
Prem Panicker :
No, Rocky, I dont mean to tell you any such thing. What I did mean to tell you, I said sometime back but you were so busy posting this, you weren't listening
rahulk :
HI Prem, I think that players not signing the ICC contract is good in one way. First it would give our players well deserved rest and secondly it will give us an oppurtunity to see the reserve players talents. What do you think??
Prem Panicker :
Which reserve playes, friend? If you take out the top 18, 20 players we dont have much by way of reserve. But yeah, it could be interesting
Raj, Madison :
Faisal atleast u answer me...I am constantly following theissue going on between ICC and the players who dont want to give up their adv contracts. I was just wondering what if ICC sticks on to that rule and does not allow players who are not giving up the contratcs. As you know ICC championship is on the cards and imagine ourIndian team without the so called stars in the team. I was just trying to sketch out how it would lookI think this is the right time to think about a team if these bunch of star players retire at the same time. My assumption goes as follows : Openers: D Mongia, SS DasMiddle Order: Kaif, Y Singh, Laxman, R SodhiLower Order:Agarkar, Patel, H Singh, Z Khan, NehraLaxman being the captain and Kaif Vice captain. what do u say
Prem Panicker :
Hang on. You are presuming that Laxman, Kaif, Das, Singh, Harbhajan, AGarkar, Nehra, Khan et al will sign. Most of them are in England now and they have said they will not
looloo :
Ball by ball on Rediff was good. Why did u guys stop it?
Prem Panicker :
Got too strenuous, frankly. Is extremely demanding to sit for an entire day typing non stop, then do it over five days running. We'll do it forthe World Cup, though
jaydi8 :
Hi Prem, why are do you back laxman as indian captain for tests when the man is not even a certainty in the team(remember him getting dropped against zim in india)
Prem Panicker :
I dont do my analysis on the basis of what the selectors think of a player. If the fact that he was dropped against Zim is a downside, then by the same logic, why didn't people consider him for captain becuase he was largely instrumental in winning us a Test series against Aus? Or that he was your top scorer in Windies? I believe the Windies sdries came AFTER the Zim one, no?
bobee :
Did any of you guys watch the SA vs SL one day final at Morocco. Even SL seems to be better than India in finding promising young bowlers viz Dilharo Fernando who has a lethal slower ball and even now SA cannot play spin except when they play India. Any comments?
Prem Panicker :
Sure. Just this, to think about -- every single one of the SL bowlers was trained at the SL board's expense at the MRF Academy in Chennai. Now ask yourself, when last did the board in India identify a youngster and send him for training in our own academy?
tirthankar :
Prem, why do u thinkthe BCCI in such a rush to send ateam for Champions trophy, whilethe other boards are more patient?
Prem Panicker :
The BCCI is playing some game in all this that is not apparent on the surface -- I am frankly rather curious about it myself.
Rocky :
HeHeHe, but he had records and records and even a world record before being selected. You think Parthiv has the same experience.Come on!!
Prem Panicker :
How's about another player I remember who was picked out of college and sent to the West Indies? BTw, Parthiv if I am not mistaken has a world cup to his name, no?
Indian1 :
, Hey guys I am trying to post a question and it says "bad language" or something. I promise its a clean question.what do I do ?
Prem Panicker :
well, now look, your post materialised here, right? so if you do type clean, it will appear
Thirumalai :
As a test case Bankar may be allowed to play sothat one more bowler available in addition to a opener openingslot
Prem Panicker :
You know, experimenting is at best done at the start of a series. We now have two tests to go. If we want to at least draw this series, we have to win one of them. If we want to win, we have to win both. Hardly, I would think, the time to play around with test cases
SaveIndianCricket :
FAISAL/PREM, YOU GUYS SEEM TO PICK EASY QUESTIONS AND GIVE LENGTHY ANSWERS TO THEM?? YOU DON"T SEEM TO ANSWER MY QUESTIONS
Prem Panicker :
Sometimes we pick lengthy questions and give short answers. Does that answer your question? *L* Boss, there is so much streaming past, that with the best will in the world some will be missed. Is why we provide that link to send queries ahead of the chat, a swell
sameep :
do u think that the criticism of saurav ganguly is justified? he has been scorin runs in the west indies and in the last test too
Prem Panicker :
I think the criticism has been in matches when he hasn't scored. in matches where he has, his batting has been praised. isn't that how it is supposed to be?
jj :
Comparison of ratra and patel? any big differences in technique?
Prem Panicker :
Keeping wise? Sure. You'll notice Ratra is a lot more balanced on his heels, while Parthiv is more forward balanced. Ratra's gloves invariably point down the pitch, which increases chances of getting the ball on the heel of the hand. Parthiv that way looks technically superior
Rocky :
Parthiv Patel stood and stood and stood....(yawn).Agreed that the match needed to be drawn and all that. But why can't we hit runs and draw the match? He seems very talented but to call him a 'gem' or 'find' is a bit too much,na?
Prem Panicker :
Hoo boy, first match, second test innings, you want him to play a shot and if he did and got out, you would ahve buried him
rishabh :
Hi Prem/Faisal , just answer in yes or no, will India be able to save/win the series?
Prem Panicker :
don't k'no'w, how's that? *L*
mono :
prem do u expect the standoff between the players and icc is going to effect the players performance
Prem Panicker :
Dont see why it should -- dont we all work with things on our mind?
Prem Panicker :
HEY, GUYS -- IS GETTING ON FOR TWO PM HERE AND I ALREADY SKIPPED BREAKFAST. LET'S CALL IT A DAY, MEET AGAIN AFTER THE TEST. :-)
gkumar :
prem between parthiv and ajay ratra who would you pick for the next test. I apologize if you have already answered this. I just joined the chat
Prem Panicker :
Parthiv. :-) OKAY, REALLY OUTA HERE.
Prem Panicker :
WOKAY, GUYS... TAKE CARE,,, ANBD ADIOS
