Kapil to head body to tap sports talent

A sports academy to promote young talent mainly in India's backward areas and headed by former cricket captain Kapil Dev was launched on Friday.

Kapil and Boris Becker The academy, promoted by leading Indian auto manufacturing group Hero Honda, will involve former sports personalities helping develop sports projects to usher in social change, said Pawan Munjal, director of the Hero group.

Ex-tennis champion Boris Becker was among those lending their support.

Dev said: "Such projects will help wean Indian youth away from violence and bad habits. I also expect many of our former stars to join the effort."
