Statistical highlights for the first Test (3rd day)
Jacques Kallis' dismissal at the score of 68 was the first in his last
four innings.
His sequence of scores and the time taken by him at the crease since September this year were:
157* (381 mins) & 43* (65 mins) at Harare;
189* (581 mins) at Bulawayo
and now this 68 (in 219 minutes).
Kallis was at the crease for 1246 minutes while scoring 457 runs.
England captain Naseer Hussain, the previous record holder had scores of
70* (in 302 mins at Port Elizabeth, Dec 1999);
146* (in 635 mins at Durban, Dec 1999)
and 15 (in 85 mins at Cape Town, January 2000)
all against South Africa before being dismissed. Hussain was at the crease for 1022 minutes while scoring 231 runs.
The only other batsmen who have more runs than Kallis before being dismissed are:
Gary Sobers (WI) - 490 runs - 365* (at Kingston) and 125 (Georgetown) against Pakistan in
February-March 1958
Rahul Dravid (IND) - 473 runs - 41* v Bangladesh
(Dhaka), 200* & 70* (Delhi) and 162 v Zimbabwe (Nagpur) in November 2000.
The 121 run partnership between Lance Klusener and Mark Boucher was South
Africa's all-time joint fifth best for the seventh wicket in Tests. However
it was the best for this wicket against India obliterating the previous best
of unbeaten 101 between Brian McMillan and Shaun Pollock at Cape Town in
January 1997.
The hundred (108) by Klusener was his fourth in 45 matches and his
second against India in 8 matches. His other hundred against India was the
unbeaten 102 at Cape Town in January 1997, which incidentally was his maiden
Test hundred.
The five wickets (for 140 runs) for Srinath now extends his tally of
wickets to 56 in 12 matches. He now occupies the seventh position among
bowlers who have maximum wickets against South Africa. Interestingly among
contemporary bowlers only spinners Muthiah Muralitharan (70 wickets in 10
matches) and Shane Warne (64 in 12) are ahead of Srinath.
South Africa's total of 563 runs was its seventh highest in Tests and its
highest against India bettering the 529-7 decl at Cape Town in January 1997.
The Indian bowlers have now conceded over 1173 runs in two successive
innings. India had conceded 610 runs in the third and final Test match
against Sri Lanka at Colombo in September 2001.
