A.W.Nourse: South Africa, trailling in the first innings by 93 runs in a low-scoring match,was set a target of 286 runs to win on a difficult pitch. The score was 105 for 6 when A.W. Nourse walked in. He added 121 runs with White when White and three wickets fell in quick succession and the score became 239 for 9 with 57 runs still needed. Nourse, with good support from Sherwell, took South Africa to a historic 1-wicket win.

G.R.Vishwanath: A wonderful innings by the incomparable Vishwanath. This was against the formidable West Indies. The bowling was not at the level reached a few years later. Still very good, led by the incomparable Roberts. India, batting first, was 24 for 2 when the master walkled in. Soon the score became 117 for 8. Vishwanath was batting like a champion at one end. No one else reached 20. He added an invaluable 73 for the last two wickets. His unbeaten 97 was made out of 166. It turned out to be a low-scoring match and India won by 100 runs.

Chappell G.S: In a very low-scoring match at Sydney, Australia was left to score 218 against a very good English attack. Chappell walked in at a none-too-comfortable score of 51 for 2. He participated in three key partnerships and took Australia to a comfortable win. His runs were scored out of 167 runs.

R. Benaud: Australia had a first innings lead of 114 runs when it commenced its second innings. The English attack was very good one, led by Trueman and Statham. Australia slumped to 112 for 6 when Benaud walked in. He played a great counter attacking innings of 97 made out of 145 added while he was at the crease. Australia went on to win comfortably by 185 runs. No one knew that a month later Laker and would capture 20 Australian wickets amongst themselves (Lock contributing 5% of the haul).

P.B.H. May: In a very low-scoring match, only England's second innings exceeded 200 runs. May came in at 30 for 2 nursed the innings through 8 partners to 204, the next highest score being 30. England won comfortably in the end.
