Monday, February 26, 2001 :Plenty to prove, plenty to play for
The talent within our team is unquestionable as is the team spirit and comraderie. All we need to do now is to adapt to the varying conditions and play to the best of our ability.

Sunday February 25, 2001:A breadcrumb in an Ant’s Nest!
This was the real India for me. On the streets there were animals roaming, people sleeping and washing and rice boiling. The smells, the sights, the noises, are so different to home that I walked with my eyes opened like a child seeing his first circus. It was fascinating, sad, enchanting, profoundly, confronting, complex and yet so simple. The way of life seems so simple, and yet in this squalor, the questions of why, seem to me so complex.

Friday February 23, 2001: It is not as glamorous as it looks!
"Where once stumps at the cricket meant a few beers and yarns in the changing room, we were ordered to the swimming pool for a couple of laps and a stretch"

Thursday February 22, 2001: A day of casualties
Touching all the wood I can see, so far so good for yours truly, who is feasting on the Indian cuisine. Rather than leaving India wafer thin I will be looking like the side of a house if I keep going at the rate I am going. I hope that plenty of time batting in the middle will equal up the scales over the next four weeks. Any concerns we had before arriving in India have been eradicated by the unbelievable service everywhere we go. Surely, royalty couldn't be treated as well as we are being treated.

Wednesday February 21, 2001: Slats turns 31!
Dripping in sweat and our clothes soaking as if we had just fallen into the swimming pool, our hosts here in Mumbai, lifted the energy levels by presenting 'Slats' with a birthday cake in the changing room. After working hard for three and a half hours, our dietician back in Australia wouldn't have been too impressed watching the guys slipping into huge slices of chocolate cake

Tuesday February 20, 2001: A sad reality check
"Probably the saddest image was of a skeleton-thin lady cradling a baby that could not have been more than three months old."

Monday February 19, 2001: Invaluable exposure
"In the end of the day, the final figures probably displayed the general feeling of my teammates who treated his leggies with as much regard as he treated our captain."

Sunday February 18, 2001: A tough day in the field - Day 2 Vs India A
"The last time I saw a cricket ball so tattered was when I visited the local juniors who practice in cement nets."

Saturday February 17, 2001: Kaspa or Kimbo?
" V V S Laxman won the toss but rather than deciding to bat or bowl he politely asked Steve Waugh what he would like to do first."

Tuesday February 13, 2001: Pre-tour preparations
As for the winner of the Allan Border medal, our decorated skipper was a great recipient of the award. Not only has he been masterful with the bat, he has also captained both the one-day and test teams to a clean sweep of victories this summer. Now that he has become an AB medallist, you have to ask what else can he achieve in this game? His answer will be simple; a series victory in India will doubtlessly be high on his priority list.

Sunday February 14, 2001: Getting the run-down
"It is THE country with the largest number of English speakers in the world."

Tuesday February 11, 2001: Leaving Home
Leaving the Perth airport this afternoon, the last thing on my mind was batting in India. As I waved goodbye to my kids, my mind was more interested in what I was leaving behind than what I was heading for. Now that I am sitting on the plane, the focus is quickly sharpening to the job at hand. There is now no turning back as my brain switches from sentimentality to the challenge of batting in India and winning a test series in an unfamiliar environment. Steve Waugh's advice is hardening me to the reality and motivation of coming home to Perth in six weeks with the two sweet rewards of runs and victories. With a long break between this series and the Ashes in June, I will be going all out to enjoy this challenging tour and play my part in keeping the winning run going.
