India whip Sri Lanka
India scored a thumping 141-run victory over Sri Lanka in their concluding league match in the women's World Cup cricket tournament in Christchurch on Friday.
Put in to bat the Indians rattled up 230 for 4 in their alloted 50 overs and then bundled out the Lankans for a paltry 89 in 49.2 overs.
Chanderkanta Kaul (80) and Anjum Chopra (68) were the architects of India's triumph. They put together a 151-run stand for the third wicket after skipper Anju Jain and Smitha Harikrishna were back in the pavilion with just 51 runs on the board.
Their effort was the second-highest third wicket stand in one-day internationals, only behind England's Carol Hodges and Helen Plimmer's 231 against Ireland in 1993.
Replying, the Lankans started disastrously, losing both openers with only one run on the board, and never recovered after that.
Kavita Roy made her India debut in the match and came off well. She was given ten overs to bowl and claimed two wickets from them at the cost of just 21 runs.
India play New Zealand in the semi-final on Wednesday.
