The Meenakshi Wadhwa Chat

Meenakshi Wadhwa Meenakshi Wadhwa, the 29-year-old, University of Chicago geologist, was outspoken on Rediff chat. With the precision of a trained scientific mind she kept the wild and fantastic theories about life on Mars in check and at the same time saw to it that even the claims of the high and mighty are not swallowed whole, but in the true scientific spirit are read with the conditions and assumptions which rest at the bottom of any theory.

The transcript:

meteor (Mon Jan 20 19:11:12 1997 IST):

hello, Is any one floating around?

Mulder Fox (Mon Jan 20 19:13:36 1997 IST):

Hi meteor its me Fox

meteor (Mon Jan 20 19:14:39 1997 IST):

hi fox, what you are doing here, in space...

Mulder Fox (Mon Jan 20 19:16:37 1997 IST):

U know since time immemorial our search for our roots has been one of the most motivating factor for scientists world over. Thats one of the reaons I wanna ask the good learned doctor some questions about the existence of life on Mars.

Mulder Fox (Mon Jan 20 19:17:09 1997 IST):

Meteor: I'm just like you said it floating around

Mulder Fox (Mon Jan 20 19:19:14 1997 IST):

I love my handle......this handle was already taken in most of the chat sites.

Mulder Fox (Mon Jan 20 19:30:02 1997 IST):

Hi everyone

Mars Attacks (Mon Jan 20 19:41:14 1997 IST):

Hi everyone

Mars Attacks (Mon Jan 20 19:41:53 1997 IST):

Hi Mulder Hi Fox

Nikhil Lakshman (Mon Jan 20 19:44:35 1997 IST):

Dr Wadhwa, welcome to the Rediff Chat. It's great having you with us this evening.

Mars Attacks (Mon Jan 20 19:46:16 1997 IST):

Hi Nikhil

R2D2 (Mon Jan 20 19:48:20 1997 IST):

Where's the lady? Science sure has advanced. Look at Galileo, at Newton, at Faraday. Such pretty women are truly a great step forward for science.

Venus (Mon Jan 20 19:52:44 1997 IST):

Hey! are there really Mars men around?

Viking (Mon Jan 20 19:54:07 1997 IST):

Meenakshi, Is there any conclusive evidence that the SNC meteorites originated on MARS?

Mera Mars Mahan (Mon Jan 20 19:54:45 1997 IST):

Hi guys

Mera Mars Mahan (Mon Jan 20 19:55:04 1997 IST):

Hi guys

ZoRk39e4 (Mon Jan 20 19:55:23 1997 IST):

MAKE WAY FELLAS... THE MARTIANS ARRIVE

Venus (Mon Jan 20 19:55:28 1997 IST):

Is Ms Wadhwa in outer space? When she gonna come?

Viking (Mon Jan 20 19:56:30 1997 IST):

Meenakshi, Is there any conclusive evidence that the SNC meteorites originated on MARS?

Nakhla (Mon Jan 20 19:58:42 1997 IST):

Whether realy these meteorites samples from MARS prooved the evidence of past primitive life, water, weather surface or atmosphere?

Andromeda (Mon Jan 20 20:00:13 1997 IST):

Dr Wadhwa, on what basis do you rule out the existence of life on Mars?

QUE94201 (Mon Jan 20 20:00:47 1997 IST):

Scientists found the rocks, called it EETA79001, QUE94201, ALHA77005.. could you please explain us the classification of the names like Y793605.. ALH84001..?

Luke Skywalker (Mon Jan 20 20:04:52 1997 IST):

Why do you believe NASA overplayed the life on Mars theory? What did they gain by promoting a theory that was so shaky, scient fically?

Meenakshi Wadhwa (Mon Jan 20 20:05:10 1997 IST):

Hi, this is Meenakshi Wadhwa. Hope you have lots of questions...looking forward to hearing from you.

Venus (Mon Jan 20 20:05:20 1997 IST):

Hey, Where's the lady? has she gone gathering rocks in space.......?

QUE94201 (Mon Jan 20 20:06:01 1997 IST):

Hey, Where's the lady? has she gone gathering rocks in space.......?

Andromeda (Mon Jan 20 20:07:45 1997 IST):

Meenakshi, tell us how you got entangled with this Mars business. When did you first realise that there was something fishy about NASA's theory?

Meenakshi Wadhwa (Mon Jan 20 20:07:56 1997 IST):

Viking: Well, there will be no conclusive proof until we actually have some samples from Mars. However, we do have some pretty good pieces of evidence to suggest that these SNC meteorites are indeed from Mars; the best one being that the composition of trapped gases in some of these meteorites are exactly the same as those analysed by the VIKING spacecraft for the martian atmosphere.

Venus (Mon Jan 20 20:08:08 1997 IST):

Hey, Where's the lady? has she gone gathering rocks in space.......?

Meenakshi Wadhwa (Mon Jan 20 20:09:57 1997 IST):

VENUS: Not exactly; but have been to Antarctica to collect meteorites.

R2D2 (Mon Jan 20 20:10:23 1997 IST):

Meenakshi,I am very impressed by the progress grads from Panjab university have made in the US. Satjiv Chail from Apple. The lady who's going to fly for NAS and now you. What's so special about Panjab univ? Are your folks still in India? Why did you go to the US?

Nakhla (Mon Jan 20 20:10:55 1997 IST):

Nakhla (Mon Jan 20 20:12:13 1997 IST):

Thanks Meenakshi, Could you please us about Viking mission

Viking (Mon Jan 20 20:13:22 1997 IST):

.

ZoRk39e4 (Mon Jan 20 20:13:43 1997 IST):

the concentration of gasses trapped in alh84001 is the same as the concentration of gasses on mars. but from which period in the sad history of the red planet. is the gas concentration the in the rock the same as the gas concentration on mars would have been when it had a wetter and balmier landscape?

Meenakshi Wadhwa Meenakshi Wadhwa (Mon Jan 20 20:14:30 1997 IST):

ANdromeda: Actually, I 'm not absolutely RULING OUT the possibility of any life on Mars; All I contend is that the carbonate minerals believed to be the host phase for the so-called "fossils" are most likely much younger than has been suggested, implying that the possibility of Mars being hospitable to life at that time was not too likely.
