Questions Vikram Seth did not answer

This is a verbatim version.

Sonora Jha Nambiar:

Liked your book lots. And now I need to know: music can be appreciated, imbibed, researched. But desolation? How could you write of it with such intensity? Has the creator of Michael ever felt like Michael feels? Also, is love/despair/romance a necessary ingredient for a bestselling novel today?

shaonli roy:

whatz equal music all about?

Mohan Das:

Why such contempt towards 'A Suitable Boy' in the introduction to this chat ?

Mohan Das:

A Suitable Boy might be what Vikram Seth is best remembered for -- but there is more to him than that massive, wrist-wrenching soap opera in prose.

sureshnarayanan:

How are u ? Hi!! from Suresh.

R:

What is VS working on right now ?

Madhumita:

Hello Mr Seth its a pleasure to be talking to you today. Do you think it was a wise move to release your book and Salman Rushdie's books in competition with each when the basis of both is music and the world of musicains?

Mohan K:

Good evening Mr Seth, as a writer you must get a lot of ideas, which do you decide are worthy of the effort of being written as a novel?

Arnthrudur:

I agree with Mohan Das that A Suitable Boy gets rather a negative epiteth.

Harray:

Hi Vikram have you started work on your new novel? Or there is a long time for that to happen? BTW do you enjoying the book reading sessions?

Arnthrudur:

I found it a marvellous book, it gave me insight into India (I am not from India) and intrest in a period of Indian history of which my knowledge is limited. One of my questions to Mr. Vikram Seth would be how long it took to write and was he surprised at the success.

Arnthrudur:

And since noone is writing I'll continue: Is it difficult to start anew after the success? Did people (editors/publishers/readers) press for a sequel?

Marie:

Mr Seth haveyou ever suffered from writers block? BTW while writing A Suitable Boy did you ever stop in between the book wondering will the story ever end or you had a definite end in sight? PLus how did you manage to control the characters without letting them run amok on paper?

Sanjiv Ranjan:

i read some comparision Between Vikram seth and salman Rashdi. i was amazed to see the opinion of the people about them.

Arnthrudur:

I am looking foreward to reading your new book as well as some of your previous work, which I have ordered.

Unsuitable Boy:

sureshnarayanan: Did u go to school in Delhi ?

Arnthrudur:

Today? Don't tell me you do this every day? Have I missed out a lot?

Unsuitable Boy:

Mr. Seth : Now that you are so successful, how much do u make in a year ?

sunita nair:

By Indian std I am a literate and so are many others but literatcy takes a whole new meaning in the US.We are not taught to be lovers of books at a young age.Do you think that this should be part of our educ?

Arnthrudur:

I agree.

Arnthrudur:

Did it take long to write. Can you tell us about the process or are you only discussing the new book?

mee:

hello. a suitable boy was about finding the right person and an equal music was about losing the right person. so when did you pen all you who sleep tonight?

Suparn:

Guys Mr Seth will be logging in a few minutes his answers will appear in the LEFT HAND frame, click the refresh button to view his latest answers when the chat starts. Thank you.

Arnthrudur:

Thanks. Obviously he has a lot to answer (for). It is great to be able to catch a glimt of his thoughts and the way he works.

divya:

tek2:

JAYLALITA SHOULD BE ROUTED IN FORTHCOMING ELECTIONS

divya:

a suitable boy was a rather nice book

Unsuitable Boy:

Mr. Seth how come you don't view India as that exotica that Rushdie does ?

spec:

Vikram.....was Golden gate based on people you know.cuz they were ro refreshingly real.....

divya:

oh you are still here

sushmita:

Hi Vikram, I really enjoyed your book-reading session in Lodnon recently. Any plans to write a book like Golden Gate again? Cheers Sushmita

Unsuitable Boy:

I hope all the ghatis/ghatans , the unwashed masses that get Rs 6.75 /vote remember not to vote for the villains that created this crisis ..

divya:

i used to write poems until a few months ago

harsan:

Hello...

spec:

So Vikram..do u write.like.9 to 5 ...or when the muse strikes u??

spec:

what i mean MR Sen is that are u an inspirational kind of writer or do u work at it???

Arnthrudur:

Suitable Boy is about passion gone wrong and there is a certain condemnation (sorry for the strong word) of passion. It advocates clear, level headed search for - not love but life-mate.

passwd:

I like to write non-stop.

spec:

hi Indiannnnnn long time....sir.....

mee:

is it not 8.20pm in apna desh? so when was this to begin?

Indian:

spec .. long time dude!!

divya:

vikram did you get my message

Raghu:

How did you generate interest in writing?

Unsuitable Boy:

But The Suitable Boy does not provide an answer to this metaphysical relationship of sexes that is more a Freudian in its manifestation of the ONE BEING as enunciated by the ascended El Morya.

Arnthrudur:

Unsuitable boy, it is all a question of hermeneutics!

Indian:

hello? .. test!!

Unsuitable Boy:

The Golden Gate can be heard over NOKIA !

divya:

why doesnt he reply?

divya:

can i ask you a question?

boy:

r u there sir?

Rahul:

Vikram, I live in Holland and just got married in India. It's hard to explain to these people the way i got married...the arranged marriage. So i always ask them to read your book "A Suitable Boy". It was very well written, and I suppose IT deserved the Bookers Prize!!

Natalia:

Mr.Seth, when will your new book been translated in Finnish?

Unsuitable Boy:

Maybe - depends on whether you want to examine them on a transcedental scale or a more prosaic manner

passwd:

What are you working on now?

boy:

is anyonein hearing distance?

Indian:

Vikram Seth: Do you have any plans to make 'A Suitable Boy' into a movie or a serial for the small screen?

divya:

i guess i can...how old are you?how different is your opinion about the world and life than it was say 20 yrs ago?i am at that age where my whole attitude towards life is changing.its either you who controls your attitude or it controls you.

Amber:

Mr Seth: What an hour to be with you, sir!

Indian:

Vikram Seth: It was an ABSOLUTE treat to read your book 'The Golden Gate'. I was so taken aback that in this day and age we could have someone writing a novel in the form of a sonnet .. absolutely magnificient!

Natalia:

Wonderful!

Suparn:

Arnthrudur: If the questions disappear you will have to repeat your questions.

Rahul:

SETHI Ji aap chup ho jaaiye!!

esha:

Hi Vikram, this is esha from NY.Loved ur Golden Gate. What has been ur inspiration???

Cosmic Girl:

Hey Vikram Seth..greetings from space

Radhika Seth:

Mr Seth: What do you think of traditional Indian marriages?

Vishal:

Dear Vikram, I recently read in the British press aabout a certain encounter you had with Mr. SDalman Rushdie at Lords after you wrote suitable boy. Is it true??

Unsuitable Boy:

Bhai, ab chunav kab hoga ?

Arnthrudur:

Mr. Seth. Thank you for your time. A Suitable Boy was a wonderful book and successful. How long did it take you to write it, what was most difficult, did you get many editor notes on communalism and how is it to start again after this success? Did many people press for a sequel?

Cosmic Girl:

where is mr seth...ive waited fot this chat forever...

mee:

when did you pen all you who sleep tonight? after a suitable boy and before an equal music?

Rahul:

MISTER SETH AND REDIFF!!! WHY ARE U NOT ANSWERING QUESTIONS???? ARE U HERE JUST TO SIT????????

Amber:

Mr Seth: After loving A Suitable Boy (I used to rush home every evening to read it), I found this novel of yours a bit dense. Was there any motivation to write about music?

Mohan Das:

Mr. Seth: Is the name Brahmapur (City of Brahma) a direct translation of Allahabad (Abode of Allah) ?

Nathan:

Vikram: You say the media created this "row" between Salman and yourself. Have you read his latest book, and what do you think of it?

Cosmic Girl:

mr seth..i think u should turn the book into a hindi movie..ie a suitable boy..i loved it..i almost know it verbatim

boy:

mr. seth are u here

sunita nair:

Did you have an elder read to you as a young boy?If yes do think the is a corelation between being read as a young child and being a writer

Shambu:

Do you think you pioneered this whole Indian business of marketing your books, with finesse and guile, playing one publisher after another?

Raghu:

So Vikram: what u have to say about Indian vernacular language writers, are they good enough?

divya:

esha:

Vikram, would ye ever consider writing an autobiography...!!

Unsuitable Boy:

On a slightly different note - Jayalalitha left for Chennai this evening . The jet managed to get up after 3 attempts. The pilot fears the landing .

Suparn:

Cosmic Girl: Click on the left frame and use the refresh frame option

divya:

i've wited for this chat for so long and now i cant even read his answers

Shambu:

Tarun Tejpal, who runs IndiaInk which publishes Roy and Seally, says this current interest in Indian writing (with publishers paying fabulous amounts on the basis of two chapters) is unlikely to last. Agree?

boy:

the poem all u who sleep tonight does wonders for all us homesick off seven sea dwellers...away from home land,,,,,,,u have really hit the chord among all my fellow students from various countries

Drax:

Having sunk your teeth on the neck of the web monster Mr Seth, what do u think of the optential and what it is going to do to human behaviour? What i mean is that the life here for people like me.is as REAL as the life without...

sonora:

How could you be sure that readers unfamiliar with music wouldn't tire of the details?

vibhu:

SUP! what's happening man?

Secular:

Mr Seth: What u have to say about secularism. Why don't you write about such issues which are hard hitting?

Shuchi:

I loved beastly tales . You havent't tried your hand at humour too much, any reason ?

Amit Solomon:

Mr.Seth, I am 24 years old and am working on my first book. Could you tell me how important is a good agent and could you recommend someone? My book is nearing completion...which is why I ask....

Arnthrudur:

Thank you for your answer. Do you feel real pressure to move onto a new field and are you a musician?

Amber:

I ask that because you have a lot of luck breaks yourself. Had you not meet Poet Steele, you may have written free verse!

Drax:

Mr Seth..India seems to be a contradiction with people like the ones chatting here....and people in TN who build temples for Khushboo,

sushmita:

Vikram, Any plans to write another book like Golden-Gate? I enjoyed your book reading session in London immensely. Cheers

Natalia:

Have you written your family members into Suitable Boy, as you hint in the beginning of the book?

Mohan Das:

Mr. Seth: Who are your favourite authors (both contemporary and past) ?

Miss Lata Mehra:

hey there mr seth

Shambu:

Shambu: Tell us about the great uncle who lost his arm at Monte Cassini and his what was it German Jewish wife?

Arnthrudur:

Thank you for your answer. Do you feel real pressure to move onto a new field and are you a musician - or was the new book based on research in music only?

boy:

Mr. seth ....there always been one curious factor i observed....is it necessary to stay out of india for considerable time to be a good indian english writer (barring ruskin bond he is a diff league) ??

mee:

yeh batao, even though your books are about one true love it seems that in the end that is the one thing which is not attainable. do you believe that?

A Suitable guy:

Hi there Guys !!! any particular reason why this chat is designed in such a "unsuitable" manner...

esha:

Vikram, how much do ya get involved with the character u r writing about?? I mean emotionally....r u attached to these???

Suparn:

Guys go to view and reload your LEFT FRAME. thanks

Mohan Das:

Mr. Seth: Who are your favourite authors (both contemporary and past) ?

Miss Lata Mehra:

what was ur inspiration for such a long family saga..i mean a suitable boy

Velutha:

Since you now live in England, are you going to write more and more about events and people far removed from India? An Equal Music is already that distance away...

Miss Lata Mehra:

what was ur inspiration for such a long family saga..i mean a suitable boy

Rakshanda:

hi mr seth! a lot of people say you're gonna win the noble prize for literature...comment

Balwinder:

How did you manage to muster tghe endurance to finish A Suitable Boy? 1,469 pages, boy o boy. And how the hell did you get the last page of the book to end at the bottom of the page. You must have driven David mad. And why publish the book first in India?

Nathan:

Do you find yourself a prophet spurned in your own land?

Mohan Das:

Mr. Seth: (trying second time) Is the name Brahmapur a pun on Allahabad (Abode of Allah) ?

sushmita:

Vikram, Any plans to write another book like Golden-Gate? I enjoyed your book reading session in London immensely. Cheers

Shuchi:

But there is quite a lot of seriousness also, which seems to engulf the humour. one ends up feeling sad after the book

musica:

Dear Vikram: We hear "An Equal Music not about India." Could the literary music of your book/heart not be Indian? If unfelt, is the music and/or listener alien?

Rajaraman K.:

I read your "Golden Gate" and "A Suitable Boy". I admired the very different styles you have used in these two works. A sonnet for one and an elaborate novel for the other. What were your reasons for adopting these varied styles?

Drax:

Well Suchi....I can see that if Mr Sen does go on like he is doing right now...he could like a ribtickler to beat wodehouse overnight..wink

abhiram:

tell me, mr seth, was a race between you and mr rushdie about who would finish their novel first? and how did both of you come up with similar themes?

Ritesh Kapoor:

Mr Seth, do u sometimes feel confined in the scope of subjects you will be accepted writing about because you are an Indian writing in English?

sandipan:

What made you strip down from the voluminous "A Suitable Boy" to the slimmer "An Equal Music" ?

Miss Lata Mehra:

mr seth..r u likely to come to toronto anytime soon

A Suitable guy:

Hi Vikram !!! How do u consider urself in comparison to Salman Rushdie...

divya:

i guess i can...how old are you?how different is your opinion about the world and life than it was say 20 yrs ago?i am at that age where my whole attitude towards life is changing.its either you who controls your attitude or it controls you.

sunita nair:

Why not make a the biography in two parts one what it meant to your great uncle who by profession is a dentist to lose a right and the move on to fiction how he took to writing of course with help and thus moved on with life because life never waits and so we have to move on too.

Drax:

Mr Seth....nooooooo.....U AN ECONOMIST.....keynesian/ classical/ monetarist or plain dumb marxist?

Arnthrudur:

In your books passion (which is by nature unruly)always seems to go wrong. You seem to advocate a level headed commitment, e.g. carefully arranged marriages. Is it your conviction or is passion gone wrong just such a good material?

Mohan Das:

Mr. Seth: How do you feel when people dismiss A Suitable Boy as a soap opera (like they did in the introdcution to this chat)? Being your ardent fan since Golden Gate times, it hurts me very much

Rakshanda:

are you married?

divya:

will you be in america anytime in the near future

vibhu:

hey vik. i got he hang of it. how's life man :)

Amit Solomon:

Is writer's block just plain laziness or is it the lonliness of working alone which bogs a writer down? Do ever get blocked?

Raghu:

Mr Seth: What do u think of Salman Rushdie? and what was the controversy with him?

divya:

will you be in america anytime in the near future Sorry for these Suitable Boy questions, but I haven't got started on An Equal Music yet. Why was the ending so tepid, and were you disappointed that you did not win any awards? How much tax did you pay on the moolah?

divya:

vikram what did you think of the book god of small things?

vibhu:

u from india? i mean have u lived here long vik?

Arundhati:

Tell us about Phillipe Honore. Is he your muse? Would you have written on music if he was not part of your life?

Hrishikesh:

Mr Seth: Do u think the writers in India deserved to be paid so much money? am talking about Mr Rajkamal Jha, the guy who got Rs 1.2 crore... am jealous...

Krishna:

Do you read any of your Indian contemporaries? Have you met them after the famous New Yorker picture?

shivsingh:

Where did the inspiration for your latest book come from? As usual its very different from anything you've written in the past.

mee:

Hum itni bhi jaldi give up nahin karne wale, so phir se -- both A Suitable Boy and An Equal Music ended in the same way. In both, the character did not end up with the one they loved. Kya yehi hota hai?

Drax:

Mr Sen.....as a person.how does it feel to be adulated and feted..with groupies like us hanging on to your every word (literally).....

Arnthrudur:

In your books passion (which is by nature unruly)always seems to go wrong. You seem to advocate a level headed commitment, e.g. carefully arranged marriages. Is it your conviction or is passion gone wrong just such a good material?

nagrules:

hey mr.seth where do you live?

divya:

you dont seem to want to reply...i guess i will log out

mukundtn:

Hello, Are you planning to write any other travelogues? From Heaven Lake made interesting reading, but it seemed to be more of a personal adventure rather than a travelogue. Any reason why picked this style? thanks, Mukund

vibhu:

while sketching characters, do u have real people in mind vik?

Miss Lata Mehra:

after heaven lake, when is ur next travelogue happening... it was brilliant

divya:

bye vikram it was lovely talking to you.like a dream come true

sandipan:

Do you intend to give in (in the future) to the bug of allowing movies to be based on your novels ?

vibhu:

what's your zodiac vik?

Hrishikesh:

Hey Vikram: Tell us something about your personal life.. are u married? where were u born? about your parents? about your receding hair line? joking, are u doing something for that?

Balram:

Has Phillipe made you happier?

Drax:

Mr Sen....having bitten the internet bug...what do u think its impact will be on human relationships and human nature...

Aru:

You are not a political creature, I can see, though I agree with Khushwant that the scenes in SB were remarkably close to the truth

divya:

please atleast say bye to me mr. seth

divya:

good luck with your childrens story

chirags:

which are other contemp. indian writers, that you like to read ?

Jasoos:

Tell us about Phillipe Honore. Is he your muse? Would you have written on music if he was not part of your life?

mee:

hey jasoos who is phillipe honore?

Indeed:

Hello

abhiram:

hey, mr seth, thanks a lot for answering my question, you really made my day

sandip:

when are you going to stop writing dickensian bores and get back to something original like Golden Gate?

divya:

do you daydream?

Abraham:

Do you think the Western interest in Indian writing can be sustained? Many feel it is a temporary phase, and will die out in the next year or two. Please let us know what you feel.

Mohan Das Konanoor:

sandip: don't you dare call ASB a bore :-)

Amit Solomon:

Welllllllllll??????

Natalia:

What happened to Kabir after the last chapter he was in? :-)

divya:

where are you at the moment?which city?

Drax:

LOL@byronic & mouse traps So Mr Sen...why do u write about lost love so much. Do u believe that ALL love is lost...whether because it remains unrequited or in post marriage dissonance...?

vibhu:

mere sawalon ka, jawab do. do naa

Indeed:

abhiram:

vibhu:

shivsingh:

Not sure if you'll get to my questions but just thought I'd mention that I've created a special section on you on Doon Online, (http://doononline.com) a site for graduates of The Doon School. So next time you're at a cybercafe be sure to check it out!

vishalini:

Was Maan just padding or a red herring? Thanks for ASB and AEM

harsan:

dRAX, WRONG CHAT MATE, THIS I THINK IS mR SETH, NOT THE BONG ONE.

Shahezadi:

Hi Vikram. Tell me, when did the realisation dawn on you that you had a story to tell? Was it a momentous feeling, to know that you have this story bursting within you, or a routine one?

divya:

where are you at the moment?which city?

Amit Solomon:

well, maybe we'll meet someday when you aren't that busy...bye, Vikram....

sandip:

arre Sethji, originality is everything don't you think? do you write these self indulgent, rambling novels because you can? (i.e: they let you and pay you to do it?)

vibhu:

Ashu:

Is is true that, like George Lucas, you propose to do a prequel to Suitable Boy?

Mohan Das Konanoor:

Mr. Seth: Thanks for the answer. My earlier questions (which I think got lost). 1. Is the name Brahmapur a direct translation of Allahabad (Abode of Allah) ?

divya:

his name is ajay kumar singh doon name was titi junior

divya:

where are you at the moment?which city?

srinivas:

Vikram why dont u tell something about ur experiences in china..Tell how are u able to pickup sooo many languages..heard that u are learning french now a days..hows it going on

sandip:

On the subject of R K Narayan, the sincereity and the crystalline genuineness is what sets him apart. unlike the self-indulgent rambling of so many others. Comment?

divya:

wait who isnt proud to be indian.i am sitting in america right now and i miss home dearly.there is no place like india.

wait:

Hi Vikram, u are an adorable writer, wish u could write something great about india, that once again makes us feel proud of our country. By the way are u proud to be an Indian?

Mohan Das Konanoor:

Mr. Seth: Who are your favourite authors ? (Specifically, have you read any of Rushdie's works ? What do you think of them ?)

Ashu:

Do you think Chinese literature is vibrant? Or is Chinese literature like Hindi literature, pretty moribund?

Miss Lata Mehra:

mr seth..thats the whole point..since u dont know srinivas or any of us for that matter..what would u have to lose revealing details of ur life..

wait:

u must be having a tough time keeping pace, never mind we are patient.

harsan:

dO YOU HAVE PLANS TO TRAVEL - promos - readings from your book?

divya:

di you like god of small things

mee:

will you be in new york to promote your book? when, when?

Arnthrudur:

Thank you, I will watch out for it.

Drax:

what's in a name harshan.....Mumbai still smells as awful as when it was Bombay and Vikram is no less a writer if i make a typo and call him Sen.........

:

is music = heart or mind?

Indeed:

Mr. Seth, did Eugene Onegin inspire you to write The Golden Gate (i thought you hinted that in the Golden Gate) ?

Kishenchand:

You like RK... is it his simplicity that reaches out to you? I don't know about An Equal Music, but Suitable Boy was pretty simple too. It was a page turner, but there were no grand phrases, like Ms Roy's novel...

mee:

hey abhiram this is a talk with vikram seth. why the hell do you care about salman rushdie today?

Shahezadi:

Hi Vikram. Tell me, when did the realisation dawn on you that you had a story to tell? Was it a momentous feeling, to know that you have this story bursting within you, or a routine one?

Drax:

Mr Seth....but dont u thnik SECULARISM In India seems to have been hijacked by the most venal people and now SECULARISM is the last refuge of the scoundrel..

sujata:

I see the word 'wait'...but no sign of Mr Seth...

divya:

amit he doesnot have a n eamil add. so he told me

Natalia:

Amit Solomon, stop that! He has already said that he won't give his email address to anyone.

Mohan Das Konanoor:

Sundar: It did appear. Looks like he is not answering/unable to answer many questions

Suparn:

P Sundaram: Please limit your question to not more than 300 characters pls.

Mohan Das Konanoor:

Mr. Seth: Hehe. Wonderful. Thanks a lot.

divya:

Indian:

Is Girish Moorthy logged on here roght now?

harsan:

Some of us here want to thank you for your work. Look forward to being surprised by new work.

Mohan Das Konanoor:

Mr. Seth: To what extent were the Chatterjee's based on your own family. From your various profiles, looks like the three siblings (except Meenakshi) were based on you and your siblings.

gaurav arora:

Mr Seth, good evening first of all , may i know about your opnion about "money" in life

Drax:

one thing is very clear about Mr Seth's writing style from the time it is taking to get his replies (and the content of course)..he does choose his words carefully!!!.

P.Sundaram:

I loved reading the Golden Gate..good luck to you, Kim,Preethi

Indian:

Drax .. not just carefully .. one could almost say .. deliciously!

sandip:

sorry guys, but I won't pretend it was my browser

Mohan Das Konanoor:

Mr. Seth: How do you feel when people dismiss A Suitable Boy as a soap opera (like they did in the introduction to this chat) ?

Rakshanda:

mr seth, *big smile* thanks so much. i never thought you would answer my question

Indian:

Vikram Seth: It was an ABSOLUTE treat to read your book 'The Golden Gate'. I was so taken aback that in this day and age we could have someone writing a novel in the form of a sonnet .. absolutely magnificient! I do hope you get the Nobel Prize for Lit. someday!

boy:

Kishenchand:

I am amazed that you have never Chatted before. Amazing performance from someone who truly, as Shobha De says, will win the Nobel Prize one day!

divya:

Indian:

Who cares what Shobha De thinks or says ..

OPTIONS:

MR. SETH hello do u really thk that living outside india for some time is a necessaryu preerequiste to be an acceptably good indian english writer??

divya:

):

Abraham:
