'Divestment program is over'

Mumbai, November 12, 2002: 'Market needs new FII money to go up. But China has opened up to FIIs, which will drag money from India,' says Ramesh Shrichand Damani.

joyd : Do you think the level of corporate governance in our country is satisfactory? If yes why? If no what changes can be brought about?
Ramesh S Damani : it is good in some co's and bad in other co's

joyd : What is the future of the derivative segment?
Ramesh S Damani : i think ultimately it will be a huge market if it is well regulated. We need to be pro-active in regulating the market

dayals : hello sir, i remind u of the time of anti-reservation agitation. every party had something to say but ultimately everybody succumbed to implement mandal commission. i hope history is going to repeat in the case of divestment too. your comments pls.
Ramesh S Damani : i think the disinvestment program is pretty much over. We have to wait till the new govt is in power

moss : HIPAA has a deadline of October 2003. Since work in HIPAA has not yet picked up in India ..Any idea when will be the new deadline
Ramesh S Damani : i think it will be extended beyond OCt 3

nriinve : Is Geometric showing signs of consolidating
Ramesh S Damani : it is. I am expecting a good third quarter.

uma : I have not got your answer for my question Sir. Happy New Year Damaniji. Tell me few fundamentally good scrips to invest for the year. Can I go for Ranbaxy, Hinduja, HPCL, Subex etc.
Ramesh S Damani : thanks for the wishes. You need to find your own conviction

narayan : darshan mehta in moneycontrol. com says to exit from mcdowell when counter shows 10-15%rise bcoz of poor return on equity roe & return on capital employed rocg beside co. operating margin also shows weakness. n.p down by 47.35% what is your opinion
Ramesh S Damani : i think bad news is in the price. In emerging markets liquor businessis very valuable. If they get their act together it could be a great performer. it has risks but the rewards are also great if things work out. I still own it

ProfHAumsmy : Mr Damani good evening.I am a NRI from Malaysia. Can I invest in stocks from here with foreign exchange. How to go about? Will there be capital gains tax? Please let me know your opinion on these shares and your order of preference to own them: HLL, Reliance, ACC, SBI, Mcdowell, Infy, Satyam and Telco
Ramesh S Damani : you need to open a NRI a/c for stocks with Citibank India to trade in stocks. It is cumbersome but can be done,There will be capital gains tax.For an nri stick to quality and large caps like Hll and infy. Mcdowell is a bit risky but good for risk takers

AnandBhatt : Hello Sir, how are you? I bought some EIL as a trading call at 315 2 weeks ago. Whats wrong with this govt?S hould I get out with a loss of Rs 100 or do you see it coming back to Rs.300? Pls advise. There is a CCD meet on the 14th I think.
Ramesh S Damani : i think it looks bleak for EIL on disinvestment. However it is a good co with good reserves and price could bounce back

malibudude : Hi Rameshji, is it true HCL tech has bagged an $75 million order, if so is it right time to get in?
Ramesh S Damani : that is the rumour however i likethe other IT enabled co's better. HCLTech is expensive

narayan : will u prefer switching of mcmillan into mcdowell or tata honey so that we can wipe out the maximum loss
Ramesh S Damani : mcmillan has been a huge disappointment, However i think we should still be hopeful. I would suggest all surfers read India Today cover story on IT Enabled. it is a eye opener

nriinve : How is the FII looking now? Are they positive on investment or more interested in Bovespa, and some asian countries
Ramesh S Damani : yes and also China has opened up its market to FII. this will drag money from India

joydeep : What is a typical operation How much money does it require for a stock to go up or down 20% in 3-4 settlements?
Ramesh S Damani : nobody can answer that question

nriinve : Max is making a move upwards with good volumes, any news
Ramesh S Damani : rumours of selling a stake in max health.

AnandBhatt : Sir how were the Q2 results for TATA Honeywell and Eserve. Should I invest at current levels? Is Geometric worth buying at current levels? Pls advise?
Ramesh S Damani : i own and would buy tata-honwywell at current levels. E-serve must show some growth next Qtr. Can't be sure of that so just wait a while

HJGUYF : Have you analyzed the results of Apollo Tyres? The company should report an annualized EPS of Rs 26 for the CY. At a M’Cap of Rs 475 crores and a dividend payout of Rs 4.5 last year (which should increase this year with the profits) the Co. looks a good bet. Technically also the Co. is within 10% of its 52 week high. Birla mutual and Pru icici are also large holders of the stock. When autos are on everyone’s mind Tyre companies should do well. Your take?
Ramesh S Damani : they are doing well. however cyclical business is always at a low PE at the top of a market cycle.Tyres is not my great strength

HJGUYF : Your call on King Fisher was on target. Are you still invested or was it just a short term trading call but then RSD does not talk about short term trading calls on liquor/associated stocks does he?
Ramesh S Damani : kingfisher is a holding co. i sold some but still havea good exposure

saakshi : DAMANIJI, DO U SUGGEST ANY BANKING STOCKS? IN WHICH BANKS?
Ramesh S Damani : i like and own SBI

SD : Hi Mr.Damani .How r u? Will u please guide me about the current market situation? When divestment (the recent trigger) is almost fading out, IT sector shows mixed, Manufacturing doing well but future is question marked (as impact of poor monsoon yet to come) and over above all Institutional players are pressing sales. What should be my strategy of investment (holding and fresh buying)? If u recommend fresh buying where should put money ...which sector? stock?
Ramesh S Damani : Market is sluggish and needs new FII money in order to go up. Stick to IT Enabled, some pharma and things like Mcdowell which i own. buy with conviction and not to trade

abcde : RAMESH, U TOLD US TO BUY MACMILLAN AT 300. IT IS NOW 135 OR SOMETHING. EXPLAIN HOW U ARE PLANNING TO MAKE GOOD OUR LOSSES
Ramesh S Damani : sometimes ideas don't work out, other wise we would all be Bill Gates.

HJGUYF : Last week you advised me to book losses in IT and T. Now tell me should I buy Mc Millan. I had sold off at a Rs 30 loss a few months back and did not buy back and since the counter has had such a big fall ARE the chances of appreciation more in Mcmillan or can you suggest some other stock. I have great faith in your opinion
Ramesh S Damani : market at the current time does not like Mcmillan. They need to show 2-3 good qtrs of growth in IT-enabled before it comes back in fancy. Unless you are patient and can wait don't buy it now

saakshi : I HAVE BEEN BUYING MCDOWELL SINCE 49. AT WAT PRICE DO U THINK I CAN AVG AT BOTTOM
Ramesh S Damani : it is generally not a great idea to average. However at current levels hold on. This is a great value

ProfHAumsmy : Thanks Mr Damani for your reply to my queries. I have found from chart study of the SENSEX and NIFTY indices, they are at the bottom most values. All the technical indicators like ROC(short & long terms), RSI, etc show positive divergence. It looks many shares are at the bottom like McDowell or they have tested their earlier bottoms like HLL.
Ramesh S Damani : that is true. However we need fresh money to bring life in the market

HJGUYF : Why is RJ bullish on TITAN if retail is the story (since gold price appre is already factored in) then Trent with 120 in cash on B/s is a better bet.Your take
Ramesh S Damani : he thinks the jewellery businesswill grow rapidly

saakshi : MR.DAMANI, WE HAVE KNOWN ABT "FOURTH GENERATION", AN IT ENABLED AND LEADER IN MED TRANCRIPTION. PRICE 55 PAISE.T URNOVER 22 CR.NP 5 CR. CLD U PL TELL US MORE
Ramesh S Damani : sorry dont follow it

SD : I Have some investments 5000 shares of MOSER BAER which fell sharply after Sept.02 qtr results (though results were in line) and reduction of future profit guidance were also very much expected. Do u have any idea why fallen so sharply? Stock at 145 WITH EPS OF 45/- IN current bad situation don`t u feel bargain buy?
Ramesh S Damani : somehow dalal st has never been convinced by Moser Baers numbers or margins

AnandBhatt : Thanks for the answer on Tata Honeywell and Eserve but you did not tell me whether I should buy Geometric at current levels?
Ramesh S Damani : i would at these rates. i stilll own it

A : IS there is any bad news have u heard on Hinduja TMT because it going down sharply?
Ramesh S Damani : rumors that a mutual fund is selling

AnandBhatt : I bought 500 shares of EIL at 315. Do you think I should book a loss and get out of PSUs and convert to TAta Honeywell, Geometric.I know its a hard call but I want to know what would you do? Pls answer this one.Thanks.
Ramesh S Damani : i would do it. However it could be risky

SUNDEEP : WOULD YOU RECOMMEND TATA TELECOM AT THIS RATE AND APOLLO TYRES
Ramesh S Damani : i dont own them but they should do well from here on out

A : What is your conviction on hinduja tmt at these rates?
Ramesh S Damani : it would look attractive around rs 210-220 levels

AnandBhatt : Thanks. Why do you think Alliance is getting out of India.I thought Sameer Arora was very bullish in sectors like Tech and stocks like Trent and United Phosphorous.
Ramesh S Damani : that decision is made by Corp HQ

mm12 : will HIPAA be a part of BPO business or a software service business
Ramesh S Damani : more like software services actually. Medicliam, billprocessing is BPO

kaushal : In our last chart I asked you whether I should convert my BEL into Geometric. You advised not to but still I converted part of my holding into Geo. Whar your take now at this level?
Ramesh S Damani : i like both these stocks however BEL serves from a psu curse. that is why it doesnt get a proper valuation

ProfHAumsmy : Dear Mr Damani please request the REDIFF personnel to tranfer the draft to regular readable copy as early as possible. We, who are abroad many times sit for chatting and the draft form of the chat is difficult to read continuously as the matter keeps moving. Tuesdays chat can atleast be available by Wednesday's evening. Please request them on all surfers/investors behalf. Thank you and bye.
Ramesh S Damani : they tell me that it is posted within 4 hours of the chat being over. Pls send them a mail if it is not being done. They have assured me it is available

rama : DAMANIJI, PLS. ANS MY QUESTION -- IS BALAJI A GOOD BUY AT CURRENT RATE OF 76?
Ramesh S Damani : i am bullish on entertainment and balaji is a potentail leader. However the industry is still immature and may have to wait to mature

SUNDEEP : DAMANIJI , IF I WANT TO BUY 1 SHARE FOR 12 MONTH HORIZON , PLEASE RECOMMEND ONE OF YOUR CHOICE.
Ramesh S Damani : for 12-18 months take a hard look at Tata Honeywell. However it is an ill-liquid stock so do be careful. thanks all for joining. See you next week
