'I am cautiously optimistic about PSUs'

Mumbai, October 9, 2002: 'Currently, there is a huge opportunity in IT-enabled and BPO stocks. Maybe biotech in future,' says Ramesh Shrichand Damani.

dayals : sir, writing to PSU bull with great expectations. with affirmative statement from PM, what u have to say about psu stocs in general. If at all u r positive , pls. suggestsome scrips other than HP-BP of the world becoz i feel it takes hell lot of time for the bigger scrips while smaller ones even trebbled-quardapled without getting noticed.
Ramesh S Damani : Hello everybody. Thanks for joining in. Let's start. I am cautiously optimistic about PSU stocks again. Take a look at NALCO. Risk reward is good here. I own some.

ROX : GIVEN THE AMERICAN MARKETS FALLING FOR HOW LONG,THE INDIAN MARKETS WILL HOLD?
Ramesh S Damani : They have hardly held. However, tech will at some time. D-link because we will benefit from the woes.

ManojGarg : Sir,Do you have any idea about Kaashyap Radiant in which UNFC will be taking 40 % stake at around Rs.20/- per share and consequently will be making an open offer, however still the scrip is being traded around Rs.2/-.
Ramesh S Damani : Don't follow it. Sorry.

BASANTMAHESHWARI : Ramesh babu is this PSU rally a speculative one one which in stock market circles is commonly referred to as a sucker's rally? Would you not be tempted to sell into this rally and concentrate on only annalysing the company and not the Govt. along with it???
Ramesh S Damani : That does help. However, it is too important a segment to leave out when valuations are in your favour.

baracuda : citigroup has recently announced huge price cutson its it outsourcing budgets this should impact negatively the bottomline of eserve and i flex and polariswhat have yu have to say
Ramesh S Damani : Business has to become efficient. However, this is Citi NY. Other entities bid and the price is not aggregated.

BASANTMAHESHWARY : Infotech and Sitescope is to set up data center of excellence ahve you seen the report it is available at myiris.com.YOur take on the company at a valuation of sub 250 crores
Ramesh S Damani : It is a good company with unknown management. They have been not totally transparent. I own a small amount.

baracuda : dont yu feel our pm is too soft with antinationals who surprisingly have found place in the cabinet for disinvestment to really take placewe require a leader who rules with an iron fist something like lee kwan hu
Ramesh S Damani : Yes. You don't need consensus politics but conviction politics.

sbn : is BEL is still a good buy
Ramesh S Damani : Yes, in terms of earnings. I still own it.

Shoba : What is "cautiously optimistic" How much to invest ?
Ramesh S Damani : It is not a radical idea. Invest about 40-50 per cent of your savings in the market.

ManojGarg : Sir,Are you still bullish about MINDTECK?
Ramesh S Damani : Yes, but not heard any new news.

dayals : your take on smaller scrips eg GNFC,GSFC,ITI,Chennai petro,BEML etc.
Ramesh S Damani : I am selling BEML. It is unlikley to be disinvested soon. GSFC, GNFC after Gujarat elections.

ravi : Onward Technologies have their AGM on 11.10.02, any take if there are going to be some surprises ?
Ramesh S Damani : Not heard anything. How about you?

sbn : r u not still sure about the BP and HP going deinvest ? I think people r still worried .
Ramesh S Damani : I think HP will be done. BP is still iffy.

AdityaAggarwal : i am holding sahres of Zee, Glaxo Smithcline consumer and morepen lab. how many time i should hold them
Ramesh S Damani : I would hold Zee and Glaxo. Not enthusiastic about Morepen.

xxx : Sir abt i-flex what r u thoughts, other than the overhang that u mentioned
Ramesh S Damani : A good company. Will do well.

sridharmb : Sir do you think in stocks like bel, beml divestment will happen as these co. defence products to the govt.pl answer,if so these co. are good buys at current levels?
Ramesh S Damani : BEML could happen, but won't soon. BEL unlikely next 2-3 years. I am not buying them at current rates.

vijay : what about concor are you holding or selling
Ramesh S Damani : Sold some.

AnandBhatt : Dear Sir,Goodafternoon. How are you?Sir you had said that you were going to give a view on Tata Elixi in 2 weeks.Any ideas? It rose from 92 to 97 today.
Ramesh S Damani : I am trying to visit them after Q2 results. I have not made up my mind on it.

RAJIV : GIVEN THE OPTION OF THREE STOCS, ZEE,TATA HONEYWELL,MCDOWEL. WHICH ONE WILLYOU CHOOSE WITH AN INVESTMENT TIME OF ONE YEAR.
Ramesh S Damani : For one year Tata Honeywell.

AnandBhatt : Thanks,Do you recommend investing in Eserve and Geometric at current levels?
Ramesh S Damani : Wait till q2 results are outbefore makeing fresh purchases

dayals : sir experts r recommending i-flex as if its going to take over Infosys in times ahead .do u find it a multibagger in making
Ramesh S Damani : In the short run, markets for services will be better than products. So it is unlikley.

vijay : good see on cnbc on saturday, i think you rec tata honey well, but this quarter reult will be flat. can you advice at what levels can i buy, mean while any thing you bought.
Ramesh S Damani : Buy after Q2 results.

vikas : Do you think market will do well despite global market falling like nine pins
Ramesh S Damani : That would be hard. Money would stop coming in.

vijay : any idea about tata honey well q2 reults
Ramesh S Damani : At the AGM, they said it would be flat. Growth should come in Q4.

AnandBhatt : Sir,One of the anchors on Star Buisness news last week was saying that he Warren Buffet on some channel was telling everyone to forget equities for the next 5 years?Any idea about this?
Ramesh S Damani : Returns from equities should be poor as measured by the index. The trick is to buy good companies though.

vijay : sir macmillian, gati is not moving, are selling or holding
Ramesh S Damani : Still holding.

DEARSIR : I find that you are quite a visionary in the sense that you at least make an effort to identify upcoming sectors to invest in. What are they now ?
Ramesh S Damani : My focus is IT enabled or BPO. It is a huge opportunity. Maybe biotech in the future.

Hari : Glad to meet u sir,sir can u tell me about NASDAQ
Ramesh S Damani : NASDAQ is in USA and trades mainly tech shares. NYSE trades old blue chip shares.

RAJIV : COULD YOU PL.TELL BUSINESS MODEL OF MAX INDIA AND PEER COMPANIES
Ramesh S Damani : Insurance, Health care and some tech. However they have long gestation periods. It is for patient people. It is cheap by market cap. Earnings will take time.

sridharmb : Sir, what percentage of portfolio on should invest in psus, IT enabled sector and cash?, as the world economy is not doing well ,there is the chance of attack on Iraq by usa, do you thingk there is risk in purchasing it enabled co.
Ramesh S Damani : 15 per cent PSU, 30 per cent IT-enabled, 10-15 per cent miscellaneous and rest in cash. Something is always happeningin the world.

shilpa : WHAT ABOUT INFY RESULT SIR? IS IT GOOD TIME TO ENTER BEFORE RESULT?
Ramesh S Damani : I prefer buying after the results are out.

vijay : are you confident on macmillian get back to 350 levels by another three months
Ramesh S Damani : Unlikely. I would be happy with Rs 225.

ravi : Warren Buffet said on CNN that he was not interested in the markets tomorrow, or day after or next month, but over a priod he was a bull on American and Europe. These media twist facts sometimes to suit their agenda
Ramesh S Damani : He feels he cannot predict prices in a month, week. Over time, he is confident of his ideas.

Hari : sir, did u think the harshad metha was real bull of the BSE
Ramesh S Damani : No.

DEARSIR : Since you are a broker... wanted to know .. is is possible to invest peoples money like forming a small mutual fund since i am doing well in analysis and systems ?
Ramesh S Damani : Register with SEBI and start portfolio management.

Shah : DEAR SIR, WHAT WOULD BE A GOOD EXIT PRICE FOR ENGINNERS INDIA?
Ramesh S Damani : It is well priced at current rates of Rs 310.

Ramesh S Damani : At current rates then.

broke : Do you feel a bull run is around, if yes, to what levels will the sensex go?
Ramesh S Damani : Two thoughts. 1) Expansion of derivative list will bring speculation. 2) IDRs are a good thing. It will expand the universe. These could be triggers. The biggest trigger though is PSU privatisation.

keshav : A very good afternoon sir, what do you think about the most awaited and most annoying thing i.e. disinvestment of PSU, Does the price toward north of these scrip is only because of PM Atal ji statement, What do you think in this matter, Should we've to buy it moderate buy it or sell it as of now...??

Ramesh S Damani : I can't decide that.

dna : What would Warren Buffet buy in India ? Concor & BEL ?!
Ramesh S Damani : Maybe. And I'd like to think Mcdowell. He prefers a great business to great management. Liquor is a great business.

viveksharma : In the current market scenario which one is better to inveat-An Index Fund or a scrip whit strong fundamentals.
Ramesh S Damani : In stock index may remain flat.

sridharmb : Sir, which PSU scrips will you recemend to buy at current levels? is the small psus are undervalues like neyveli lignit, iti and RCF

cpk : Rameshji what u feel the rate of Sci, Bpcl, hpcl for disinvestment should be??
Ramesh S Damani : SCI is less than Rs 90. HP, BP around Rs 400-500.

dna : Sir - Is the Management of McDowell sound & trustworthy ?
Ramesh S Damani : Not the best, but the valuation is in your favour.

dna : What not UB Beer over McDowell ? Beer is expected to outshine the IMFL segment over the next few years
Ramesh S Damani : Price has moved up. We had recommended UB around Rs 88. Both companies together price touched Rs 280.
