Questions Satish Gujral did not answer

Preeti (Mon Jan 12 1998 7:6 IST)
hi everyone

Shyam (Mon Jan 12 1998 7:28 IST)
Hi everyone Hi Preeti

Shyam (Mon Jan 12 1998 7:41 IST)
Mr Gujral, sir when did you think about turning to art? And what do you think is the best form of expression?

Arun (Mon Jan 12 1998 7:52 IST)
Namaste Sir, its a pleasure to be able to talk to you. Mr Gujral what has been your inspiration to be able to overcome the hurdles in your life?

Buanorotti (Mon Jan 12 1998 7:53 IST)
Was much impressed by the diagrams for the Belgian embassy. Nice to have the opp. to meet you

Buanorotti (Mon Jan 12 1998 7:55 IST)
Have also been impressed by your opinion that a style should not become a crutch (not your exact words, but that conveys the meaning, I hope)

Pablo (Mon Jan 12 1998 7:56 IST)
Mr Gujral: Yours is a tale of indomitable courage. How did a young boy discover a reservoir of will within himself to achieve what you have done?

Buanorotti (Mon Jan 12 1998 7:56 IST)
Considering that, what do you have to say about the horses, elephants and woman of another artiste, who has found that familiarity also breeds affection.

Sanjay (Mon Jan 12 1998 7:56 IST)
Hello, Mr Satish Gujral. Why do you choose your career as a Painter while your brother opted for politics?

Priti Khanna (Mon Jan 12 1998 8:0 IST)
Good evening Mr Gujral, I once saw you at the Jehangir Art Gallery in Bombay, of course at that time I didn't know you were related to Inder Gujral. As an artist, what kind of an interest do you have in politics?

sandesa (Mon Jan 12 1998 8:0 IST)
Namaskar Satishji

Jeevan (Mon Jan 12 1998 8:0 IST)
Who are your favourite painters? Indian as well as foreign?

Sardar Gill (Mon Jan 12 1998 8:1 IST)
Is it true, sir that Indian art and Indian artists survive on State patronage? I believe you, sir, have been a recepient of such largesse in the early years of your career. Why does Indian art and culture have to be shackled by State sponsorship? It is almost like the USSR!

Deepak (Mon Jan 12 1998 8:1 IST)
Pranam Sir.

Buanorotti (Mon Jan 12 1998 8:1 IST)
Often we see among artists and intellectuals that the I rules the world they are supposed to depict. Meaning that it is not just the artist's view of the world, but far more the world as the artist wants it to be. Why have such people, in whom art is merely affectation, who award each other prizes and revel in prolix arguments that don't seek solutions, been allowed to hijack what (I think) should remain the preserve of the honestly creative? Phew!

SheilaP (Mon Jan 12 1998 8:1 IST)
Hello...

Priti Khanna (Mon Jan 12 1998 8:2 IST)
Sir, who are the other Indian/foreign painters whose works you have admired so far? Any all time favourites?

sandesa (Mon Jan 12 1998 8:2 IST)
Sir, to begin with how did you get attracted to painting? Any idols ?

Deepak (Mon Jan 12 1998 8:4 IST)
Sir, Is the whole Gujral family behind Your brother Inder in his political decisions?

Sanjay (Mon Jan 12 1998 8:6 IST)
Mr Gujral:We believe that you and Mr I K Gujral share a good friendship besides being friends. Now, can you tell us did Mr Gujral seriously believed that he would complete his term as the Prime minister?

Jeevan (Mon Jan 12 1998 8:8 IST)
Mr Gujral: ARE YOU IN? PLEASE ANSWER MY QUESTIONS?

Karl (Mon Jan 12 1998 8:9 IST)
Jeevan: Mr Gujral is in, he is writing a long answer that's why the lag.

Deepak (Mon Jan 12 1998 8:15 IST)
Sir, Is your family Especially the Prime Minister , inspired by the leftist ideas, if so how can that be harmonized with economic liberlization?

James (Mon Jan 12 1998 8:18 IST)
Mr Gujral: I feel your brother was a better foreign minister than a Prime minister? Won't you agree? After all he achieved more as a foreign minister than Prime minister?

Sanjay (Mon Jan 12 1998 8:20 IST)
Mr Gujral: Is your wife around since you said she is your interpreter??

Karl (Mon Jan 12 1998 8:22 IST)
Mr Gujral, what do you think will Indian politics be like now that Sonia and Priyanka both have decided to join this line, and do you think it is wise to involve novices just because of a family lineage in politics?

nami (Mon Jan 12 1998 8:24 IST)
Namste! Greetings to you Satishji and the rest of the people in the chat room

nami (Mon Jan 12 1998 8:26 IST)
though I have not known much about you, the little I have heard about you shows the indomitable courage you have! It is they who surmount obstacles without complaining reach the heights!! My sincere appreciation

nami (Mon Jan 12 1998 8:28 IST)
You are very right Satishji. sympathy from others lead you nowhere in achieving ones own goals! However people like you should be good examples to our youngsters.

Sanjay (Mon Jan 12 1998 8:29 IST)
Mr Gujral: Who is your favourite painter and sculptor? why?

Pablo (Mon Jan 12 1998 8:29 IST)
Do you think sculpture in India has been given short shrift in modern times? There was a seminar at Bombay's NCPA last year where people like Gieve Patel got angry when someone pointed out that discussions on art must not be restricted to painting. After all, India's true artistic heritage is sculpture, not painting!

nami (Mon Jan 12 1998 8:34 IST)
Artist must have their freedom of expression. Yet is it justified to create disharmony in society by exercisng only their rights?

Buanorotti (Mon Jan 12 1998 8:36 IST)
I beg to disagree with what you had to say about opportunities not being able to keep the weak going forever. And there, am not discussing you, but a general truth. Nothing to do with you, sir.

Buanorotti (Mon Jan 12 1998 8:38 IST)
Just want to tell you, sir, that you haven't answered any of my questions, some of which have caused much argument in our college.

nami (Mon Jan 12 1998 8:38 IST)
The same rule applies to every member of a society to excercise their rights judiciously, ever vigilant of hids duties. This is how society should be!! But these days people want to do whatever they want under freedom of expression. what do you say to this? The not too ancient India also produced Immortal artists in every field but they I think followed the principles of Dharma. No compromises and their names still reverberate in history

Buanorotti (Mon Jan 12 1998 8:42 IST)
Sorry to say that again, but MF's tragedy is self-made and, therefore, reversible. But the ordinary don't have genius to fall back on, once they are done with their excesses. The latter appears to be a greater tragedy than that of a man idly mocking the world with bits of cloth and paper, choreographed paintings, whatever.

nami (Mon Jan 12 1998 8:43 IST)
I agree with you sir - the right people for the right job!

scs (Mon Jan 12 1998 8:49 IST)
Mr. Gujral, Who inspired you to go into learn different languages, learn different subjects at a very young age ?

mk (Mon Jan 12 1998 8:51 IST)
Mr. Gujral, how you feel being a brother of prime minister of india?

namee (Mon Jan 12 1998 9:2 IST)
You built the Belgian Embassy with no formal education in the field of architecture. Would you say the knowledge needed for it, was found within yourself? Or did you have any informal training.

scss (Mon Jan 12 1998 9:5 IST)
Mr Gujral, would you be interested in venturing into politics if some party offer you a ticket in this election ?

Buanorotti (Mon Jan 12 1998 9:6 IST)
1. In trying to free yourself from the shackles of style, are you seeking a variant expression? Or have I not understood the full import of the term expression. 2. Aren't people who respected you for style also trying to pigeonhole you, to like you by association with something they are used to? I did not having painting and sculpture in my background, except as a result of my interest, and so knew nothing of this classification. Thank you for telling me.

namee (Mon Jan 12 1998 9:7 IST)
It is important for straightforward people to be in the Government that determines the wellbeing of the citizens. The present atmosphere breeds only corrupt people. To break this chain, sometimes the good people have to align with others to achieve their goals of good governance. Is it not for the same reason, that your brother also aligns himself with others, however dubious their party might be?

Buanorotti (Mon Jan 12 1998 9:8 IST)
Some small controversy was raked up over you working on the Ambedkar park for Mayawati. It may not be very important, but what do you have to say of that?

kedar (Mon Jan 12 1998 9:10 IST)
Hi! is the chat still going on or am I late?

kedar (Mon Jan 12 1998 9:12 IST)
HELLO ! ANYBODY THERE ?

Buanorotti (Mon Jan 12 1998 9:13 IST)
Kedar, do reduce your font. Mr Gujral is already answering our questions.

Buanorotti (Mon Jan 12 1998 9:14 IST)
Already? Mr Gujral. No!

kedar (Mon Jan 12 1998 9:14 IST)
I guess you are still there. Mr Gujral, are you, too, interested in Urdu sher-o-shairy, like your brother?

Priti Khanna (Mon Jan 12 1998 9:15 IST)
Thank you Mr Gujral, will you persuade your brother also to come for a chat so that we get an opportunity to chat with him as well. Thank you once again.

Buanorotti (Mon Jan 12 1998 9:15 IST)
Loved chatting with you, thought it was for a short time. After a chat with one educated man, we'd also love to chat with your brother too. Wonder if you could bring him over too? :)

namee (Mon Jan 12 1998 9:17 IST)
It is refreshing to talk with 'educated' people. I should think the rest also contributed for a healthy atmosphere in the chat room today. thanks, and bye
