Questions Dr Iyengar did not answer

Sumedha (Tue May 12 1998 7:48 IST)
Mr Iyengar: Do you think a country like India afford to have nuclear explosions when 40 percent of its population is below the poverty line?

Savita (Tue May 12 1998 7:48 IST)
We were always smart! It just helps to show it for once :-)

Bala S Desikan (Tue May 12 1998 7:48 IST)
Good evening, Dr Iyengar. Why did it take 24 years to detonate a second bomb? Was it lack of political will or were our scientists not ready?

pc (Tue May 12 1998 7:49 IST)
i feel disappointed. to fight with a fifty year old technology is pointless. what will this solve. will missile technology from china, stop flowing into Pak, or will NE insurgents no longer get support? and if this the way we prove ourselves smart, sad scene.

PoLi (Tue May 12 1998 7:50 IST)
Dr Iyengar, China may be immune due to its strong economic ties with the developed world but France suffered due to its tests in the Pacific; could the rich nations not gun for us, the noveau riche?

shu (Tue May 12 1998 7:50 IST)
Very impressed with the way the test was conducted: quietly, with firm resolve and a willingness to face the consequences

Venkat (Tue May 12 1998 7:50 IST)
Mr Iyengar: Do you think Pakistan has capability of making nuclear bombs as former Prime minister Nawaz Sharif had stated the Pakistanis possess nuclear bombs?

CS (Tue May 12 1998 7:51 IST)
Salutations & Welcome DrIyengar! I am curious to know why Buddh Jayanti has been chosen for the tests now and before...is it because it's for PEACEful purposes?

Savita (Tue May 12 1998 7:51 IST)
PC : The difference lies in how the world views you now. This was a necessary step to assert our own self-confidence. And it sure as heck acts as a better deterrent than saying "we have the capability"

A R K Rangan (Tue May 12 1998 7:52 IST)
Friends, today, we have one of the greatest nuclear scientists of our time, a man born under the sign of Cancer (June 27). Dr Iyengar, sir, it is a pleasure to discuss Monday's explosions with you. I am, Sir, a pacifist. Why was it so necessary for India to have exploded a nuclear bomb and a thermonuclear device yesterday?

Bikini (Tue May 12 1998 7:52 IST)
Why did we suddenly need a bomb to make a statement with? Of course, Agni, Prithvi are chafing at the bit but was it immediate danger or political expediency that forced India into this move?

helium (Tue May 12 1998 7:53 IST)
Congratulations to everyone! Dr. Iyengar: what is/was the most difficult step in making the fusion bomb?

pc (Tue May 12 1998 7:53 IST)
Savita, the last five countries to rise in the world's eyes and more importantly in their own standards of living - Japan, the ASEAN, the NIEs in Asia have managed to avoid weaponry. Fine now we have the bomb. So what? What does it mean? The world will respect us more. I do not think so.

neutron (Tue May 12 1998 7:54 IST)
hello dr. iyengar. congrats!! and welcome . nice of you to spend sometime with us.

Bikini (Tue May 12 1998 7:56 IST)
And all this talk of belt-tightening. I've had to do plenty of it in my childhood, including waiting a day for half kg of sugar. Do you think we need to goad others into attacking us? Wouldn't a refusal to bow to pressures like the CTBT have been enough without fooling with the strong nuclear force in Pakistan's backyard?

Rakesh (Tue May 12 1998 7:57 IST)
Dr. Iyengar : Did we really need to demonstrate our prowess? Do we not already have this technology since 74? Why spend 10-20 crores on nuclear weapons now when we have thousands of people unemployed? What do you think ?

Sandesa (Tue May 12 1998 7:59 IST)
Dr. Iyengar .. even as all of us are rejoicing , could ya tell us what exactly is in store for us ? I mean the sanctions n the technology transfer

CS (Tue May 12 1998 7:59 IST)
Sir, For how long have the devices been ready...before the OKay was given?

sen (Tue May 12 1998 7:59 IST)
PC, how do we plan to survive the international sanctions, if it comes.

neutron (Tue May 12 1998 7:59 IST)
dear sir the us says it is wrong on india's part to adopt a stance where we are complaining on inherent capabilities of US and others and drag our feet on CTBT. pls. comment

Kavita Singh (Tue May 12 1998 8:0 IST)
Good evening Dr Iyengar: Sir, there is much speculation that yesterday's detonation is just a prelude to signing the CTBT? Do you think after all this India will sign the CTBT?

Sulabh (Tue May 12 1998 8:0 IST)
Since how long have we had this technology?

suresh (Tue May 12 1998 8:0 IST)
Dr Iyengar, what is in store for us now? Wont the sanctions affect us badly?

shu (Tue May 12 1998 8:0 IST)
Dr Iyengar, how did the preparations manage to escape detection from the spy satellites?

Sulabh (Tue May 12 1998 8:1 IST)
dr., after yesterday's tests, can we now carry out future tests via computer simulation?

Sulabh (Tue May 12 1998 8:3 IST)
this test came as a great surprise to everybody. How long have the scientists been working on this test?

Amit (Tue May 12 1998 8:4 IST)
IS IT TRUE THAT INDIA HAD THE NUCLEAR POWER SINCE 24 YEARS BUT HAS ANNOUNCED IT PUBLICALLY ONLY YESTERDAY

Sudhanshu (Tue May 12 1998 8:7 IST)
Dr Iyengar, Is there a plan for subsequent test in the near future?

Savita (Tue May 12 1998 8:7 IST)
Dr. Iyengar, for the low yield weapon what kind of tactical weapons do you mean? Would it be something like nuclear warhead on prithvi for example?

Raghu (Tue May 12 1998 8:7 IST)
With the bombs that were tested, can they be used in missiles like Agni, Prithvi ...etc.

jagdev (Tue May 12 1998 8:8 IST)
Congratulations everybody!! Dear Dr. Iyengar. Did the BJP government started this testing or was this being planned long before.

sen (Tue May 12 1998 8:8 IST)
Dr. Iyengar: have we faced anything in the dimension of an international sanction so far. How do we plan to combat it?

Sandesa (Tue May 12 1998 8:9 IST)
Dr. Iyengar , last year , US "black listed" institutions like IISc, BEL, HAL ...now it might impose restrictions on selling of software like MATLAB and RTOS like PSOS and Vxworks which I presume are very critical for all these researches ... HOW serious is this problem ?

Sulabh (Tue May 12 1998 8:10 IST)
dr., do you see any significance in the timing of these tests? (e.g. Chinese and US visits to India)

PTI (Tue May 12 1998 8:10 IST)
Savita, It is not economical to make chips. most american companies only design and fabricate in malaysia, taiwan, china ROI is very low and recovery volumes are very high.

Jayanti P Sarathy (Tue May 12 1998 8:11 IST)
Mama: Please don't answer staccato style. We need a slightly more elaborate explanation.

neutron (Tue May 12 1998 8:12 IST)
sir when a scientist develops a nuke what is uppermost in his mind, tech. progress/interest of the nation/peace

Bala S Desikan (Tue May 12 1998 8:12 IST)
Sir: Were we waiting to test our technology before deciding to sign the CTBT? You see nothing perilous in signing this treaty now?

ramesh (Tue May 12 1998 8:12 IST)
:Sir, Were the preparations for the test planned from long back OR is it from the day BJP took to the office

Savita (Tue May 12 1998 8:13 IST)
Dr. Iyengar, in your honest opinion, Does Pakistan have the same capability as us as far as nuclear weapons are concerned?

V R Chari (Tue May 12 1998 8:13 IST)
Dr Iyengar: What is the relevance of having a Hydrogen bomb?

Master Hawk (Tue May 12 1998 8:13 IST)
Dr. Iyengar, What is your assessment of Pakistan's scientific capabilities in Nuclear area? Do you think Pakistan's nuclear program has similar capabilities as India does?
