Kusum (Thu Apr 22 1999 6:29 IST)
Hello Shubha, tell us why have you decided to enter the pop arena? Is it because the exposure, money and glamour is more?

Meghdoot (Thu Apr 22 1999 6:32 IST)
Hi Ms Mudgal, madam why is that we Indians who have created classical music don't care much for the tradition today? Why have the masters distanced themslves from us prefering to go around the globe instead and form their own mafia?

Shanti (Thu Apr 22 1999 6:46 IST)
I really enjoyed your song Jai Jai Mataram, tell me what is your personal opinion of pop music today? and how diff will be your album?

Milap (Thu Apr 22 1999 6:47 IST)
Namaskar Shubhaji, do you think Indian classical music will surive in INDIA??

Jerome (Thu Apr 22 1999 7:11 IST)
Hi, you have sung a lot of genres of music do you also plan to sing Hindi film music?

Naazish (Thu Apr 22 1999 7:24 IST)
Namaste Shubhaji. My name is Naazish…I am staying in the US. How are you doing today ?

Rajni (Thu Apr 22 1999 7:28 IST)
Ms Muddgal: Can u tell us how did u land up in this field?

Pandit (Thu Apr 22 1999 7:32 IST)
Why did your Vande Mataram, which was far superior to the Lata version, not get the mileage it deserved?

CS (Thu Apr 22 1999 7:33 IST)
this is CS from Atlanta USA saying namaskar, wonder if you are on line?

Raghunath (Thu Apr 22 1999 7:33 IST)
Ms Shubha: Are u only interested in classical music?

Raga (Thu Apr 22 1999 7:33 IST)
Thanks for your response. what is the latest project?

CS (Thu Apr 22 1999 7:36 IST)
Don't have much knowledge what is going on in music field in India, however would love to know what kind of music you like to create .

theactor (Thu Apr 22 1999 7:36 IST)
what is the response to your kind of music from the "MTV generation"?

Sangeet (Thu Apr 22 1999 7:38 IST)
I had seen you walking once in Juhu near Amitabh Bachchan's home, and boy, you took my heart away!

Indian (Thu Apr 22 1999 7:38 IST)
Hmmmm .. some seems to be .. err .. in'fat'uated? hee hee hee

sherlockh (Thu Apr 22 1999 7:37 IST)
shubhaji, don`t u think we have arrived at a stage where classical music is already as dead as a dodo, only kept alive by a few people, and u shubhaji have already decided to jump into a more lucrative pop world, kindly explain

Sare (Thu Apr 22 1999 7:37 IST)
Ms Mudgal: How does a single woman cope in the big bad world of Delhi's music circles?

Raga (Thu Apr 22 1999 7:40 IST)
How did you get into music? Where are you from? And what are you doing in Bombay?

Rajni (Thu Apr 22 1999 7:39 IST)
Ms Muddgal: Who is the greatest Indian classical singer?

Sangeet (Thu Apr 22 1999 7:41 IST)
Indian, of course, I am hooked by the lady.

Satish Adhanki (Thu Apr 22 1999 7:50 IST)
Ali more angana........

CS (Thu Apr 22 1999 7:42 IST)
I think I would try to know you thru your music rather than here on chat

Indian (Thu Apr 22 1999 7:43 IST)
CS .. for that we would need to have a different kind of chat .. maybe some kind of multi-cast .. with the invitee responding in real time to e-queries .. like the one;s we are posing here!

NaazishM (Thu Apr 22 1999 7:44 IST)
I am not aware of the technical intracacies of Indian music, but with my very primitive observation, the scenario in the Indian music arena can be divided into two groups. The first one being the group of classical musicians, Hindustani or Carnatic, dominated by the ustads and pandits and usually preferred by ones who understand Indian music. The second being the group of POPular musicians who create music for the masses. You have been trying to bridge this gap… Is it not necessary that more musicians should try doing this? Not only would it provide quality music but would be popular among the masses too like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. How would you rate Ab Ke Saawan?

Sadhika (Thu Apr 22 1999 7:44 IST)
so what are you doing to popularise classical music, besides your web site of course?

CS (Thu Apr 22 1999 7:45 IST)
Good wishes to you, namaskaram now

NaazishM (Thu Apr 22 1999 7:46 IST)
sure i am looking forward to it

NaazishM (Thu Apr 22 1999 7:53 IST)
perhaps that was the reason Ulfat ki nayi... from Kamasutra was sung by Iqbal Bano

seharsh (Thu Apr 22 1999 7:49 IST)
great music

Sadhika (Thu Apr 22 1999 7:54 IST)
so what are you doing to popularise classical music, besides your web site of course?

Nidhi Sharma (Thu Apr 22 1999 7:59 IST)
Ms Mudgal: who is your favourite musician and why? Also filmi musician?

Nandini (Thu Apr 22 1999 8:2 IST)
Another thing is, Subha, why is that trained singers never really make it big as playback singers. I mean, you don't make it, if you are a famed classical, singer as a famed playback too. Why??

NaazishM (Thu Apr 22 1999 8:4 IST)
Do you teach music to the younger lot ?

Sadhika (Thu Apr 22 1999 8:4 IST)
tell me, what are you like -- you sound like a fun, unconventional person...

MusicIsLife (Thu Apr 22 1999 8:2 IST)
Among Indian singers and lyric-writers, whose work do you like?

Indian (Thu Apr 22 1999 8:4 IST)
Ms. Mudgal: Who among today's musicians, would you rate as the most admirable? What I mean is, who are your musical heroes and heroines?

Sadhika (Thu Apr 22 1999 8:4 IST)
thanks for answering my quesiton

Nandini (Thu Apr 22 1999 8:5 IST)
Really! Great, I love almost all her songs! Another favourite of mine -- now, now, don't laugh -- is a popsinger called Alisha Chinai. For a untrained singer, I think she sings pretty well, though my friends laugh when I say that. Have you ever listened to her?

Rajni (Thu Apr 22 1999 8:5 IST)
Ms Mudgal: Which Ab Ke Sawan, can you clarify my doubt?

Pandit (Thu Apr 22 1999 8:6 IST)
sorry, work called. what are your future projects?

Indian (Thu Apr 22 1999 8:6 IST)
Nandini: Pls .. Alisha Chinai is an apology for a singer .. what she is doing is selling a package deal .. and .. the package is good .. in the eyes of some.

amitduggal (Thu Apr 22 1999 7:54 IST)
what about Indian actor and actress?

seharsh (Thu Apr 22 1999 7:54 IST)
Ms. Mudgal, Apart from KS, which are the other movies which have your music?

Nandini (Thu Apr 22 1999 7:56 IST)
Subha, definitely... In fact I have spoken to Neelam and Shekhar a couple of times too.

Nandini (Thu Apr 22 1999 8:6 IST)
MusicLife> thanks, I love that one!

MusicIsLife (Thu Apr 22 1999 8:7 IST)
nandini> yeah, me too!

Nandini (Thu Apr 22 1999 8:7 IST)
Indian, I dare to disagree. What are the songs/albums you have heard?

Indian (Thu Apr 22 1999 8:7 IST)
Nandini: Try ALL!

Sangeet (Thu Apr 22 1999 8:9 IST)
You mean you don't know Suparn Verma. Ma'am. He is the KING OF THE CHATTERS, THE LEGEND HIMSELF. IN THE WORLD OF CYBERSPACE, HE IS A BIGGER STAR THAN YOU!

Indian (Thu Apr 22 1999 8:9 IST)
Nandini: I actually think Kavitha Krishnamurthy herself is not a GREAT singer. No no, wait, what I mean is, she does not have a GREAT voice! Her voice grates. Esp. at the higher frequencies. And Alisha - the lesser said the better. Even Madonna (her model I would presume) has a better voice. And no, Madonna is NOT a great singer either.

MusicIsLife (Thu Apr 22 1999 8:12 IST)
you have a website? wwwwwhat is it called???? will ggggo!

Nandini (Thu Apr 22 1999 8:13 IST)
Kavita's, Indian? Again we disagree. Alisha, of course, is not as good as Kavita, but she is good -- what I don't like is people running roughshod over her just because she is a poppy singer... but the fact is that she can hold her own. I know, I know, we disagree...

Nandini (Thu Apr 22 1999 8:11 IST)
Shubha, yeah that is the one. he is quite a famous chap hereabout, is Suparn. By the way, did you know that he can sing a bit? You must, must ask him to sing you a song... may be you can tell him whether he has got talent or is wasting his time getting up in the morn at 5 and doing swarashudhdhi etc etc..

ruchi (Thu Apr 22 1999 8:11 IST)
I have liked all your songs, in different dialects. In how many languages have you sung so far?

Indian (Thu Apr 22 1999 8:12 IST)
Nandini: Wait!! You mean you are a neighbour of Suparn's? *phew* .. must be SOME pain having to listen to so much bathroom singing ..

Indian (Thu Apr 22 1999 8:16 IST)
Ms. Mudgal: What do you think of the singer Aarti Anklekar? have you heard of her?

Pandit (Thu Apr 22 1999 8:14 IST)
Nandini: I didn't know Suparn could sing.

Indian (Thu Apr 22 1999 8:14 IST)
I think the best comparison with Kavita is Chitra from the South. They have both sung the SAME song for Bombay. And if you listen to it on a CD on a good system with good speakers - the limitations of Kavita's voice become deafeningly obvious. (I think the song is 'kehna hi kya' which is 'kannaalane' in Tamizh.)

ruchi (Thu Apr 22 1999 8:15 IST)
Shubha, I have liked all your songs, in different dialects. In how many languages have you sung so far?

NaazishM (Thu Apr 22 1999 8:15 IST)
the pop world has invited many a singer (sometimes i feel that i can also sing and write my own songs...bathroom stuff...u know!) Could u stress on the importance of knowing (classical) music before entering in this world? What would be your advice, suggestions to aspiring performers?

Indian (Thu Apr 22 1999 8:15 IST)
Nandini : The last line was for you. comparing Kavita and Chitra.

ruchi (Thu Apr 22 1999 8:16 IST)
Shubha, I have liked all your songs, in different dialects. In how many languages have you sung so far?

Nandini (Thu Apr 22 1999 8:17 IST)
Indian> My contention is, Chitra being a better singer doesn't make Kavita a bad singer, does it? And personally I prefer Kavita's voice to Chitra's.

Raga (Thu Apr 22 1999 8:17 IST)
How can you say you are not BEAUTIFUL? YOUR EYES drive me crazy

ruchi (Thu Apr 22 1999 8:17 IST)
Shubha, I have liked all your songs, in different dialects. In how many languages have you sung so far?

Sadhika (Thu Apr 22 1999 8:17 IST)
how would you descibe yourself? you sound like fun, non-conventional, someone i'd like to know better :)

ruchi (Thu Apr 22 1999 8:18 IST)
ruchi : Shubha, I have liked all your songs , in different dialects. In how many languages have you sung so far ?

Nandini (Thu Apr 22 1999 8:18 IST)
Shubha, ah, you have sidestepped my question about Chinai very nicely. Is it cos you too consider her too bad a singer to mention here? diplomacy, shubha? :-)

NaazishM (Thu Apr 22 1999 8:18 IST)
the pop world has invited many a singer (sometimes i feel that i can also sing and write my own songs... bathroom stuff... u know!) Could u stress on the importance of knowing (classical) music before entering in this world? What would be your advice, suggestions to aspiring performers?

Magnolia (Thu Apr 22 1999 8:18 IST)
Shubha, what do you think of today's pop singers? Do you watch MTV or Channel V?

MusicIsLife (Thu Apr 22 1999 8:18 IST)
What do you think of the work of Javed Akhtar, Lucky Ali, Silk Route? Do you think Indipop is ever going to have genuinely different singers/musicians/writers?

Indian (Thu Apr 22 1999 8:18 IST)
Nandini: *sigh* .. I was not comparing singing abilities (which CAN be corrected) - just voices (which are pretty much God-given).

Indian (Thu Apr 22 1999 8:19 IST)
Magnolia? .. Yo!!

Magnolia (Thu Apr 22 1999 8:19 IST)
hey she's gone... i come in and she goes....

Magnolia (Thu Apr 22 1999 8:19 IST)
Indy...you recognise me!!! great..:))

NaazishM (Thu Apr 22 1999 8:19 IST)
Is there a difference between GOOD MUSIC and POPULAR MUSIC

Indian (Thu Apr 22 1999 8:20 IST)
*sheesh* .. she's gone eh?

Indian (Thu Apr 22 1999 8:20 IST)
Magnolia .. of course .. even when I am blinded by other windows .. I would never NOT recognise ya!

Indian (Thu Apr 22 1999 8:21 IST)
Nandini .. if you're still here .. come on in to the Cafe .. I will still beknown as Indian there .. ;-)

Magnolia (Thu Apr 22 1999 8:21 IST)
is that why you have been neglecting foyer?

ruchi (Thu Apr 22 1999 8:22 IST)
ruchi : Shubha, I have liked all your songs, in different dialects. In how many languages have you sung so far?

Nandini (Thu Apr 22 1999 8:27 IST)
Indian, sorry had to go to the kitchen for a moment... ah, each to his/her own tastes I guess.

gladiator (Thu Apr 22 1999 8:34 IST)
Do you think that all these western oriented groups who have emerged in India over the last decade are just desperate to make a living rather than enhance our own Indian Music.?

manish (Thu Apr 22 1999 22:16 IST)
what are your future plans
