The Fatima Meer Chat

Dr Fatima Meer (Thu Nov 14 21:05:15 1996 IST):

Dieter: Thank you for kind words. I am still writing. I wrote on Gandhi because he is a South African and an Indian, and I could identify easily with him

Jake (Thu Nov 14 21:06:43 1996 IST):

WHEN WILL COLOUR STOP INHIBITING PEOPLE INTERACTING WITH EACH OTHER???

Dieter Ludwig (Thu Nov 14 21:06:55 1996 IST):

Dr Meer, thank you for your kind words. Do you believe the metamorphosis of Gandhi truly took place in your country? From being a meek Gujarathi to a fighter...

Ram Bihari Sharma (Thu Nov 14 21:07:51 1996 IST):

How did apartheid affect you personally? Did Mr Meer go to prison?

Dr Fatima Meer (Thu Nov 14 21:08:23 1996 IST):

Saanya: I defied the authorities and faced the consequences. Mandela requested to see me when I was writing the second edition, by which time the govt. had already decided to release him, and his conditions of incarceration were greatly relieved

Dieter Ludwig (Thu Nov 14 21:09:15 1996 IST):

As a Gujarathi yourself, what do you think is at the heart of this metamorphosis?

Phoenix, Durban (Thu Nov 14 21:10:24 1996 IST):

How often do you see Mr Mandela? Do the old ANC gang get together? What about Walter Sisulu? One does not hear of him too often these days.

Indian (Thu Nov 14 21:10:53 1996 IST):

Dr Meer: What do the south africans think about Indian freedom struggle and their struggle against the aparthied?

Saanya (Thu Nov 14 21:11:13 1996 IST):

Forgive my ignorance, please, but what happened? What were the problems you faced? What were the actions taken against you consequent to your book on Mandela.

Alexander Trotman (Thu Nov 14 21:11:40 1996 IST):

What kind of man is Thabo Mbeki? Is he truly Mandela's heir? Or do you think there will be a power struggle between him and Cyril Ramphoosa?

Trenton (Thu Nov 14 21:12:24 1996 IST):

What is going to happen to South Africa after Nelson Mandela?

Phoenix, Durban (Thu Nov 14 21:15:24 1996 IST):

Thank you, Mrs Meer. Why then would he want Grace Machel? I believe he is quite a ladies man. Always has been, if the accounts of the early years are right. Do you think he misses -- and I am going to use the W word -- Winnie?

Jake (Thu Nov 14 21:15:24 1996 IST):

Prof Meer is there a sucessor to Mandela??????

Dieter Ludwig (Thu Nov 14 21:16:00 1996 IST):

Dr Meer?

Jake (Thu Nov 14 21:17:17 1996 IST):

Dieter relax

Dieter Ludwig (Thu Nov 14 21:17:43 1996 IST):

My friend Jake, thank you for your kind advice.

Jake (Thu Nov 14 21:18:25 1996 IST):

Dieter, welcome

Karl (Thu Nov 14 21:19:20 1996 IST):

Hi Dr Meer

Trenton (Thu Nov 14 21:24:03 1996 IST):

Alexander: What do you think is going to happen in SA?

Dr Fatima Meer (Thu Nov 14 21:24:13 1996 IST):

We seem to be experiencing some technical difficulties...

Niyanta Singh (Thu Nov 14 21:24:25 1996 IST):

what is happening ?

Rediff On The NeT (Thu Nov 14 21:26:11 1996 IST):

We are most grateful to Mr Iqbal Meer Sharma of Compukids, a computer literacy training centre for both kids and adults. Compukids is a South African franchise developed by Meer Sharma & Associates - Management Consultants and based in Durban. With Mr Meer-Sharma's kind co-operation, this Chat would not have been possible.

Saanya (Thu Nov 14 21:27:32 1996 IST):

Dr Meer: What kind of a relationship do you share with Nelson Madela?

Karl (Thu Nov 14 21:27:36 1996 IST):

Alls well that gets well soon. Professor Meer. Who do you think will be Mandela's sucesspr to carry on the struggle

Trenton (Thu Nov 14 21:28:24 1996 IST):

Do you agree with Gandhi's pacifist policy? Can a nation survive in today's world on the principle of Ahimsa?

Dr Fatima Meer (Thu Nov 14 21:29:10 1996 IST):

Dieter:It did. Incidentally, Gandhi was never a meek Gujarati, even as a child, the revolutionary spark was evident

Karl (Thu Nov 14 21:30:50 1996 IST):

How was the spark evident??

Dr Fatima Meer (Thu Nov 14 21:31:40 1996 IST):

Alexander: I don't think Gandhi's pacifist philosophy worked, neither in India or South Africa - but it renewed the moral imperative and we can't live without that...

Niyanta Singh (Thu Nov 14 21:32:27 1996 IST):

DR MEER: my question again: do you plan on writing another book??if so what and when can we expect it ?

Dr Fatima Meer (Thu Nov 14 21:34:24 1996 IST):

... Whites have reconciled to sharing with blacks. There is a sense of reconciliation in the country, and white fears that their standard of life would fall - hasn't happened. I think we are all OK in SA. The African majority is kind and considerate

Naina (Thu Nov 14 21:35:33 1996 IST):

DR FATIMA MEER: IS IT POSSIBLE FOR MR. NELSON MANDELA TO APPEAR FOR THE REDIFF ON THE NET CHAT? PLEASEEEEEEEEE ANSWER .) .)

Phoenix, Durban (Thu Nov 14 21:35:52 1996 IST):

Thank you, Mrs Meer. Why then would he want Grace Machel? I believe he is quite a ladies man. Always has been, if the accounts of the early years are right. Do you think he misses -- and I am going to use the W word -- Winnie?

Karl (Thu Nov 14 21:36:18 1996 IST):

Yeah Yeah I would love to talk to Dr Nelson MANDELA,.........can you Prof Meer

Dr Fatima Meer (Thu Nov 14 21:36:20 1996 IST):

Niyanta: I do. Parts of one are on paper and another in mind. If God wills, they will appear in print

Phoenix, Durban (Thu Nov 14 21:37:08 1996 IST):

How often do you see Mr Mandela? Do the old ANC gang get together? What about Walter Sisulu? One does not hear of him too often these days.

Naina (Thu Nov 14 21:37:31 1996 IST):

Dr Fatima Meer: Can you explain, what do you mean by pacifist philosophy?

Dr Fatima Meer (Thu Nov 14 21:37:44 1996 IST):

Naina: Try him !!!

Ram Bihari Sharma (Thu Nov 14 21:37:48 1996 IST):

How did apartheid affect you personally? Did Mr Meer go to prison?

Alexander Trotman (Thu Nov 14 21:38:47 1996 IST):

What kind of man is Thabo Mbeki? Is he truly Mandela's heir? Or do you think there will be a power struggle between him and Cyril Ramphoosa?

Naina (Thu Nov 14 21:38:53 1996 IST):

Dr Fatima Meer: WHY DON'T YOU HELP, REDIFF PEOPLE. NIKHIL, ARE YOU LISTENING?

Dr Fatima Meer (Thu Nov 14 21:40:18 1996 IST):

Naina: By pacifist I mean Satyagraha, which as you know is very activist and pro-active

Niyanta Singh (Thu Nov 14 21:40:55 1996 IST):

DR MEER: Cani ask what is the book dealing with ???

Dieter Ludwig (Thu Nov 14 21:41:13 1996 IST):

What, Dr Meer, is the future of South Africa? Will the route lie in peace? Or will it all be violent?

Alexander Trotman (Thu Nov 14 21:42:09 1996 IST):

Who are the leaders I should be looking out for in your country?

Alexander Trotman (Thu Nov 14 21:42:43 1996 IST):

What happens when Mandela steps down in 1998?

Saanya (Thu Nov 14 21:42:51 1996 IST):

Hey, Niyanta! Why don't you do let her answer more imp. questions. After all, you can chat with her on the phone.

Alexander Trotman (Thu Nov 14 21:42:57 1996 IST):

Do you think the transition of power will be peaceful?

Dr Fatima Meer (Thu Nov 14 21:43:08 1996 IST):

Alexander: Mandela has just declared that Mbeki is not his heir. Ramaphosa has gone into the Money business, Big Time. I don't know whether he will return to politics. He would be a strong contender

Alexander Trotman (Thu Nov 14 21:44:21 1996 IST):

When did that happen? Do you think South Africa lost out when the Communist leader ( I forget his name, though I know he was born on June 28) died. he seemed a leader cast in the populist mode.

Trenton (Thu Nov 14 21:44:21 1996 IST):

How would you descibe Wiinie Mandela? Do you think she is guilty?

Niyanta Singh (Thu Nov 14 21:45:21 1996 IST):

SAANYA: hey...forgive me..but i think my questions are important too

Phoenix, Durban (Thu Nov 14 21:45:41 1996 IST):

Since the W word has been uttered, I need to ask: Did you, as someone who knows her well, ever think that Winnie would be capable of the neck lacings and the thuggery she is accused of?

Alexander Trotman (Thu Nov 14 21:46:13 1996 IST):

Chris Hani....

Karl (Thu Nov 14 21:46:30 1996 IST):

Sanya : Everyone here has the right to ask questions.

Karl (Thu Nov 14 21:46:50 1996 IST):

Sanya : Everyone here has the right to ask questions.

Dieter Ludwig (Thu Nov 14 21:47:06 1996 IST):

What five things can we expect to happen in South Africa in the next couple of years?

Dr Fatima Meer (Thu Nov 14 21:47:52 1996 IST):

Mr Sharma: I was banned for 11 years, imprisoned without trial for 5 months, escaped an assassination attempt. Our house was firebombed twice. My husband was banned. My Son also imprisoned, debarred from all Universities and forced into exile. My husband went to prison twice as a Satyagrahi

Dieter Ludwig (Thu Nov 14 21:48:23 1996 IST):

As an African are you not scared that the curse of Rwanda and Zaire will not be visited upon your country? Don't you think the apartheid regime, howesoever repugnant, prevented such a situation, at least for the next ten years?

Ram Bihari Sharma (Thu Nov 14 21:49:46 1996 IST):

What do Mr Meer and your son do now? Are they involved in politics? What does Mewa Ramgobin and Ela, the mahatma's daughter, do now? I remember Mewa was involved in the coloured section of the Botha parliament.

Trenton (Thu Nov 14 21:49:48 1996 IST):

What kind of a mutual relationship do you see developing between India & SA?

Phoenix, Durban (Thu Nov 14 21:51:08 1996 IST):

How often do you see Mr Mandela? Do the old ANC gang get together? What about Walter Sisulu? One does not hear of him too often these days.
