The Gary Lawyer Chat

Unassuming. That was our unanimous verdict as far as Gary Lawyer was concerned.

Gary made sure he was bang on time. A deep baritone, deadpan face and reserved exterior would have intimidated anybody, but Gary was quick to put the world at ease with his laid-back attitude.

So much so, half the Rediff staff did not even realise we had a celebrity in our midst.

Gary had only one condition - he would prefer it if someone else would type in his responses.

With Systems Manager Vikas Majumdar at the keyboard, Gary was ready to answer the barrage of questions about himself, his new release, Arrow In The Dust, and Indian music in general.

Read on to know why Gary assuredly can claim the title - nice man about town!

broken arrow (Mon Oct 28 19:40:30 1996 IST):

Nikhil Lakshman (Mon Oct 28 19:50:09 1996 IST):

Hi, Mr Lawyer. Welcome to the Rediff Chat. It's good to have you with us, and I do hope you enjoy the evening.

JACKO! (Mon Oct 28 19:52:36 1996 IST):

I am in a rush and will catch up with you later. I just want to know how you got behind when Janes-come-lately like Alisha and Anaida have walked away with the applause and the moolah!

Sriram (Mon Oct 28 19:54:46 1996 IST):

Sriram, I see some action, but no Lawyer. How the hell did he get a surname like Lawyer? is it because his ancestors were lawyers? Anyway, Lawyer sure beats Sodawaterbottleopenerwallah!

Sriram (Mon Oct 28 19:55:41 1996 IST):

Sorry, I was not talking to myself. I just don't know how to operate this Chat. Can anyone tell me how?

JACKO! (Mon Oct 28 19:56:16 1996 IST):

When are you goi9ng to quit singing like Jim Morrison? Lay his influence to rest, pal, and open your doors of perception!

D Bidyut (Mon Oct 28 19:57:40 1996 IST):

I dunno why I am here when I should be walking, but it is nice to speak to the folks back home. What is this chap' s claim to fame?

D Bidyut (Mon Oct 28 19:58:03 1996 IST):

sorry, that should read working

Gary Lawyer (Mon Oct 28 19:58:08 1996 IST):

Hi guys! I'm where I'm supposed to be.

JACKO! (Mon Oct 28 19:58:50 1996 IST):

HI GARY!

JACKO! (Mon Oct 28 19:59:34 1996 IST):

What do you think of all this fuss about me coming down to Bombay? have the Wizcraft people ever made an effort to promorte guys like you or are they too hooked on making a fast buck with the likes of me?

Gary Lawyer (Mon Oct 28 19:59:48 1996 IST):

D Bidyut: I'm a singer who's done everything possible in the world of Western music in India.

Shyam Kelkar (Mon Oct 28 20:01:38 1996 IST):

Hey GARYyaar tell us about your pechant for bikes ? How many of them do you have?

Gary Lawyer (Mon Oct 28 20:01:40 1996 IST):

JACK0: I've never sung like Jim Morrison. It's just something the press has related me to in terms of style and voice texture. Get my new album "Arrow in the Dust" and check it out.

Elizabeth Baker (Mon Oct 28 20:02:10 1996 IST):

eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee GARY finally I'll get to talk to the man behind the voice:-)

D Bidyut (Mon Oct 28 20:02:24 1996 IST):

Great. Here's wishing youlots of luck. You sound like a nice guy. God bless. See you later.

Gary Lawyer (Mon Oct 28 20:02:26 1996 IST):

Shyam: I have only one bike a Z1 Kawasaki 900 at this point.

Elizabeth Baker (Mon Oct 28 20:02:57 1996 IST):

Gary man, If you were shipwrecked on a desert island which FIVE tapes would ya take with ya????

Sriram (Mon Oct 28 20:02:59 1996 IST):

When are you getting a BMW?

Shyam Kelkar (Mon Oct 28 20:03:39 1996 IST):

But you had more that that????(sob)What happened to those???

Gary Lawyer (Mon Oct 28 20:04:05 1996 IST):

JACKO: They do Hindi pop whereas I do purely western music which has a niche audience as opposed to the girls who do mass-appeal music.

broken arrow (Mon Oct 28 20:04:30 1996 IST):

hey garry how come you put me in the dust???

JACKO! (Mon Oct 28 20:04:36 1996 IST):

Why don't you sing Hindustani music?

JACKO! (Mon Oct 28 20:05:12 1996 IST):

Broken arrow: Very cliched. Very laboured.

Gary Lawyer (Mon Oct 28 20:05:34 1996 IST):

JACKO: I have no background in Hindustani music.

Shamoli Verma (Mon Oct 28 20:05:53 1996 IST):

Gary why is that I haven't even heard of your album, and believe me when I say that I have been following career with interst. Is it the music companies fault??? Which company is it anyway?

Elizabeth Baker (Mon Oct 28 20:06:27 1996 IST):

GARY!!!!:-0

Gary Lawyer (Mon Oct 28 20:07:28 1996 IST):

Shamoli: It's absolutely the record company's fault for holding on to the master for the last one year. But it's finally out as of the last ten days and hopefully the video which is shot in New York will gather momentum in the next few weeks.

Alisha (Mon Oct 28 20:08:08 1996 IST):

Hi Gary , why is that Alsiha and Anida and Mehnaaz get nominations and you don't????
