The Astad Deboo Chat

safar (Fri Oct 18 22:53:22 1996 IST):

Astad Sir, can you share your most thrilling moment's from your recent Arctic adventures...

Mark Holburn (Fri Oct 18 22:53:41 1996 IST):

Hi, fellas. Was just cruising by, when I saw this notice posted. Have a little time after lunch, am greatly interested in travel, so here I am. Mr Deboo, any suggestions for a nice trip to India. Which places must I visit? I will be there for a week three weeks from now.

ASTAD DEBOO (Fri Oct 18 22:54:24 1996 IST):

Snap: The other interesting places I have been to was Ladakh, Peru, where I climbed the Mt Wynapichu, which is adjacent to Mt Pichu. In China though I could not travel a great deal but Xian comes very prominent in my mind. The Amazons in Brazil, especially the Manaus area is again very captivating. These are the few.

Bikram Hasmukh Shah (Fri Oct 18 22:54:24 1996 IST):

Which is the most exotic location you have been to in your life?

Charles Eggert (Fri Oct 18 22:54:24 1996 IST):

Hey Rediff guys, this chat seems to be getting a bit scattered with some questions on travel and some on dance. May I request Mr. Deboo to tell us about his Arctic adventures first since that's what this chat is supposed to be about. Later, we may talk about your dance.

Ashwin S Nagarkatti (Fri Oct 18 22:55:32 1996 IST):

Okay, point taken, Charles. How cold waas the Arctic?

Eskimo Chief (Fri Oct 18 22:57:11 1996 IST):

It OBVIOUSLY was VERY COLD there. We're talking about the Arctic, not Kansas City!

RUNNING NOSE (Fri Oct 18 22:57:20 1996 IST):

hey NAGARKATTI, who are you to decide, let the ASTAD answer whatever he wants to. don't decide for him.

Mark Holburn (Fri Oct 18 22:57:49 1996 IST):

Charles, lemme just find out what I need to see in India. I shall be visiting Bombay and Bangalore.

Ashwin S Nagarkatti (Fri Oct 18 22:58:30 1996 IST):

Hey Chief, I know it was cold. But I am trying to get an idea.

RUNNING NOSE (Fri Oct 18 22:59:04 1996 IST):

ASTAD, YOU THERE?

Bikram Hasmukh Shah (Fri Oct 18 22:59:29 1996 IST):

ASTAD, ARE YOU THERE?

safar (Fri Oct 18 23:00:20 1996 IST):

Mark Holburn: It's great to know that you are coming to India. I can suggest you to visit Agra, Jaipur, Udaipur, Nimrana in the central part, and this you can cover in a week's time.

Bikram Hasmukh Shah (Fri Oct 18 23:00:33 1996 IST):

;-)

ASTAD DEBOO (Fri Oct 18 23:01:30 1996 IST):

Ashwin:I'm thinking about. Will get back to you. Safar: Most thrilling moment of the Arctic adventure was at Summit Lake when I heard the stories of four mountaineers from Pamplona, Spain who had climbed Mt Asgard. It had taken them 17 days to climb up and two days to climb down!n Bikram:The most exotic location I have visited would be Iguasu Falls at the border of Brazil, Urguay, and Paraguay.

Bikram Hasmukh Shah (Fri Oct 18 23:02:55 1996 IST):

lUCKY GUY! How many countries have you visited in your life?

safar (Fri Oct 18 23:03:33 1996 IST):

Mark Holburn:There are lot of places around Bombay and Bangalore. You can visit Otty, Connor, Kodiakanal, Mysore and lot of places in Bangalore.

Mark Holburn (Fri Oct 18 23:04:15 1996 IST):

Thanks, safar. Are there any interesting places I can buy antiques?

Ellen Powell (Fri Oct 18 23:05:09 1996 IST):

Finally, an answer! How did you get to the Arctic? It would be nice if you could describe your journey and your arrival there. What was your first impression?

ASTAD DEBOO (Fri Oct 18 23:06:40 1996 IST):

Holburn:One week is too short to see this great country of ours. It all depends which is your gateway city. If you are arriving in Delhi you are better off going to Agra and either Jaipur or Udaipur. That's also being ambitious for a week. Arriving Bombay you could go to the SOuth. If your Q was a bit more specific i can answer you better.

safar (Fri Oct 18 23:06:48 1996 IST):

Mark Holburn: Yes, you can find many antiques shops in Jaipur, were you can find good painting, sculptures, handicrafts. In other location s also you can go around and see the local markets for local handicrafts of that area...

J Srikantan (Fri Oct 18 23:06:58 1996 IST):

Astad, Internet time is precious, so please do hurry up. I have a supplemantary to Bikram's query. What would be the most exotic location you visited in India?

Ashwin S Nagarkatti (Fri Oct 18 23:07:19 1996 IST):

Are you more comfrotable taklking about dance than travel?

ASTAD DEBOO (Fri Oct 18 23:07:50 1996 IST):

Running Nose: There is no secret. Keeping in shape and dancing probably makes me look young in your eyes.

Mark Holburn (Fri Oct 18 23:08:22 1996 IST):

Thanks, Mister Deboo. I have some ideas. Gotta rush. I hope you are dancing when I am in town, will catch up then!

ASTAD DEBOO (Fri Oct 18 23:09:18 1996 IST):

Ellen:WOrking with the hearing impaired is challenging and at the same time it is great satisfaction of sharing my work and when one sees them performing it is a great feeling.

J Srikantan (Fri Oct 18 23:09:23 1996 IST):

That's better.. I have a supplemantary to Bikram's query. What would be the most exotic location you visited in India?

Bikram Hasmukh Shah (Fri Oct 18 23:11:20 1996 IST):

Astad, tell us, have you ever felt frustrated with your career. It must be very difficult making headway in a country when state patronage is so obviously biased and where I once read some dancers (female ones, I mean) kowtowed (now that's a euphemism) with ministers to get their things done!

Charles Eggert (Fri Oct 18 23:11:57 1996 IST):

This is very disppointing. The conversation is not at all about Mr. Debbo's adventures. I think I'll log on some other time when the chat is a bit more focussed. Bye Mr. Deboo, it was nice.

ASTAD DEBOO (Fri Oct 18 23:12:00 1996 IST):

Holburn:In Bombay you could take a trip to Elephanta Caves and to the Kanheri Caves.

ravi k (Fri Oct 18 23:12:53 1996 IST):

hello is there anybody out there

J Srikantan (Fri Oct 18 23:13:26 1996 IST):

What would be the most exotic location you visited in India?

ravi k (Fri Oct 18 23:13:28 1996 IST):

hello is there anybody out there

Ellen Powell (Fri Oct 18 23:14:05 1996 IST):

How well is your art appreciated in India? What about abroad? Who sponsors your shows abroad? Do you do any shows for charity? Do you do any commercial shows?

J Srikantan (Fri Oct 18 23:14:10 1996 IST):

Sure, Ravi. Welcome aboard.

ASTAD DEBOO (Fri Oct 18 23:15:40 1996 IST):

Ellen: Getting to the Arctic in my case started from Vancouver and the flight path took me to Yellow Knife, Rankin Inlet before I arrived in Iqualit. Arriving into Iqualit was quite panoramic frm the air.

ASTAD DEBOO (Fri Oct 18 23:16:03 1996 IST):

Bikram: 55 countries.

Bikram Hasmukh Shah (Fri Oct 18 23:16:43 1996 IST):

55!

Ashwin S Nagarkatti (Fri Oct 18 23:17:18 1996 IST):

Sometime back, I asked which was the finest compliment you received in your career?

ASTAD DEBOO (Fri Oct 18 23:17:24 1996 IST):

Srikantan: Ladakh

Vidyashankar Subramaniam (Fri Oct 18 23:18:23 1996 IST):

If you were to take a holiday on a desert island and could choose one celebrity companion, whom would you take? And why?
