'Most traders lose money'

'It is a tough period and no one is making money by sitting. However it will pass. India still retains an edge in IT and I believe that,' says Ramesh Shrichand Damani.

Rajiv100 : Is Gati Corporation considered to have a good quality of Management?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : Thanks for joining in. Let's start. Gati has good mgmt not the best. They are not well known. However the business is sound and the dividend of Rs 4 is attractive.

Rajiv : Hello Ramesh! I have reduced my exposure to the cement sector by booking profits in Grasim at Rs. 330 Now I'd appreciate your views on L&T as a company - would you expect strong performance over next two quarters?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : I expect a spinoff of the cement div at a good valuation. Earnings will still be under pressure.

Manish : Sir, I am holding 300 Shares of Mobile Telecommunications Ltd., I bought them at Rs. 33/-, the current market rate is around 13-15, what is the outlook of the Telecom Industry and what should I do with my shares
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : I do not follow the company. Sorry.

abigail : The market seems to lack confidence. It is not able to stay at higher levels. Your comments sir.
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : The market is reflecting the malaise of the economy. It needs structural reforms to get the market going.

simple : Is long term investing dead? There is no way that businesses will be able to maintain their edge in business. What do you think?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : I don't believe that. If I did I would leave the market. Of course it is a tough period and no one is making money by sitting. However it will pass. India still retains an edge in IT and I believe that.

Kansal : I have got a substantial chunk in Gujarat Mineral Developement Corporation, what's the outlook, How is the Mgmt. and Potential of Earning this year ?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : Mgmt is fair and commodity prices are getting firm. I would hold it.

chandak : can UTI bank be purchased for long term
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : Not at the current time.

chandak : has the record date for VSNL declared
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : Yes it has. Check with your broker.

simple : What can a long term investor do in such a situation? Should he buy because prices are low or nurse his wounds?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : You must have conviction in the stocks that you buy. This country is a great one and will survive this period. Fancy will return. Buy companies that you feel will surviveove the next 2-3 years.

chandak : suggest me a dark horse for one year horizon
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : Take a look at United Breweries. I own some.

YSinha : Sir, What should the Goverment do to build confidence among the Investing Community ?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : Stop criminalising the entire financial community. Do meaningful reforms at a good pace. Not just talk.

sampath : good evening Sir,
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : good evening sir. Your question.

Amb : Sir, why are we still so poor and underdeveloped?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : I blame New Delhi and our politicians.

arbi : Do you see a future in the Entertainment industry. I have a few shares of Zee which I bought 2 months back. What would you suggest I do with it
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : I see happy days for entertainment industry, particularly those who develop content

pvs : With the falling interest rates shouldn't stock prices improve because of lower borrowing costs
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : if that was true Nikkei would beat 40,000 and not 12,000.

sampath : can u comment about the UTI crises
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : It is a big problem and not going to be wished away. I am afraid the NAV will sink. Debt and Equity portfolio are of poor quality.

arahaman : Thank you Ramesh for your advice on SSI. Please comment on Hero Honda.
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : Hero Honda is a much better quality share.

Anupama : Sir,what is the future of IT stocks?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : the industry will rebound. I am confident of that. If we can't make it in IT we cannot make it in this world.

corre : hello Mr. damani...what is the safest way in which students can trade in shares??should we buy less amount of shares or something else??
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : every one has to pay an education fee for the stock market. The fee is in terms of losses. However avoid making the same mistakes. Over time you will learn the value of discipline and conviction as opposed to tips and momentum.

pvs : Don't you think that IT has really made investing easy through online investing and Demat. It has widened the market also. But still people are losing lots of money like the 1992 scam. Is it because of greed?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : Pretty much. Most people approach investing as fun and games. Like playing the ponies. They do not make an attempt to understand the mechanics of it. They will spend more time in buying a TV then studying a stock. Bad idea.

puneet : mr. damani my q once agin what about the market trends further
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : market will have a technical rally in September. However it looks like a rally. Nothing sustainable.

sunil : Any comments on Silverline's future....i have lost a lot in it
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : Cloudy. Avoid it.

corre : thank u Mr Damani for ur answer..what i actually wanted to ask is that ... i can trade in shares online..so what is the best way in which i can trade online keeping in mind that i am a student and cannot risk of putting much money into it???
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : You can trade online. Trade small qty and less volatile shares if you cannot stomach large losses or have little time.

pshan : How does infosys look for long term?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : it is the best of the business, however growth has slowed and that has not been factored into the price.

Nisha : At what price shud I buy RIL RPL & Reliance Capital?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : i would not invest in them at the current time

puneet : mr damani why a company like reliance who is also showing profits is going in downward trend
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : the growth rates cannot be maintained. Petrochem is not an exciting business.

Bharat : Sir, Who is Mr. Kirit Somaiya and why he is after the Market ? Does he understands the Stock Market in totality ?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : I am not sure how much he understands the market in totality. However he is an MP from North Bombay and on the JPC. He is trying to help small investors.

sunil : Sir, Is HFCL a good buy or a hold at current trading levels
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : avoid it. Any stock that falls from 2500 to 55 -- look very carefully at it.

Jay : IT in India is heavily dependent on US. So what is the trend in US markets Can u give us a time-frame estimate of US gaining back in the market?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : Financial assets in US, India, Japan will continue to remain out of favour. It will take a long time for confidence to return

Roger : Do consider zee a good stock for trading over next few weeks?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : It is a good candidate to trade in.

rajiv236 : Sir pls tell me about Gillette India?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : Mgmt problems. Bloated its equity and growth has slowed. A bad idea.

palpankaj : What abour Pentamedia - Mr Damani? Please answer
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : I would avoid Penta. Mgmt is not known to be the best. Remember in a bubble everything went up. Don't mistake those prices with the real value of the co

srinivas : Mr. Damani Sir, Do u suggest me to enter stock market at this time ? Kindly suggest me.
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : sure with a 2 year view.

VKOMARAGIRI : Dear Mr. Damani, What is the future of Nagrjuna Fertilisers, Prism Cement and KEC shares. Please advise
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : none of those shares excite me.

sanju : Why do u think there is so much variation in valuaton of HDFC bank and ICICI bank and do u think LIC Housing finance is a good buy ????
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : I am not too hot on financial assets as the market is being gripped by scandals.

Kalyanaraman : You have replied to a question that the slower growth rate has not been factored in the current pricing of infosys... does it mean that one should not buy infosys at these levels ?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : Co is still at 10 times sales. If growth slows down for 2 years at 30 % they will be rerated. Their model is not good for the current times.

sunil : Sir, How do u rate AZTEC Software at its current level - a BUY, a HOLD or a WASTE
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : It is an expensive stock. Its parent Exodus has been beaten down. It will have trouble growing.

srinivas : Mr. Damani sir, Which company do you really suggest me as I am entering vey much time. Kindly suggest me.
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : take a look at United Breweries or E-Serve. I own both.

saurabh : i have colgate from last 20 year. now what should be done. should it good to sell or hold for some day and how many.
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : I would hold it. It looks good value.

LongTermInvestor : Hello.. Good Evening Sir.. This is the SSI fan (forced to be a fan bcoz i'd bought at 4 digit levels ) from Chennai once again. The company had come out with the results and I observe the positives as 1. Cleaning up the Balance Sheet (Netfinex write off and clear guidance on w/o of Goodwill ) 2. Better than industry margins - better than NIIT and Aptech 3. Consolidation of software business 4. Cash on B/s - Rs.240 crores as on 30.06.20015. Special Dividend..
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : I am skeptical about mgmt. they have not delivered. I am not impressed with the noises they are making. When you place shares at 6500 you should have some moral responsibility. Good mgmt do not let stocks fall 99%.

Pratik : Should I hold Global tele or Sell?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : Avoid it.

sandip : should I sell US64 or hold for some time
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : exit it quick. The faster you quit the better.

Ashvini : I am anxiously waiting to hear from you as this is my first chat of life.
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : thanks for logging in. I missed your Q though,.

ketan : Good evening sir. What about ADANI EXPORT? good to buy at this level for 3 months period?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : I would avoid it. Co is closely held. poor floating stock.

shukla : damani boss , your opinion on tata power or BSES ??
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : both look good to me.

ajitbond007 : wat about max india sir
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : Reasonable bet. This is a quality mgmt focused on value. I own some.

ketan : What about Tisco Sir. Good to buy at this level or one should wail for 78-75 rs. ?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : Steel prices are collapsing. So is the stock. Avoid it.

Anand : Dear Sir, What is your opinion on Tata Infotech ???
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : Good value at current rates.

sanju : What about public sector banks which pay out hefty dividends for eg syndicate bank, andhra bank, state bank of Mysore etc
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : look at the crisis in UTI etc.Who knows theNPA's of them. Avoid it.

PD : WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT DABUR INDIA
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : Good business and should do well.

Elliot : I see that yu hold Subex, Max, and so many other such stocks .. how do you manage to hold so many ? isnt it against theory and that too in B Group ?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : Only small quantities as i study them to get comfortable. I am nots cared of ill-liquid stocks. Provided that my call on the co is correct. Liquidity comes

LongTermInvestor : Thank you Sir for the reply on SSI. However, could you please guide regarding whether to Accumulate / Hold / Sell.. Do you see further downside for the scrip.. If so.. how much..?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : it could go down further. Technical levels suggest a lower price.

janam : I am student and want to invest few money in Share can u suggest me some scripts plz
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : I had suggested investments in e-serve and united breweries in an earlier answer.

Kalyanaraman : mr.damani, one personal question--are you a day trader also (apart from an investor )?..if you can reply,do you make profits always ,as a trader ? how many traders make money ?is the percentage more or less ?
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : i don't make money on all my trades. It is a way for me to get a feel of the markets. Most traders lose money. It is a very demanding job.

mahesh_09 : Mr. Damani for max india hutchison value could only be around 200 cr ur views (M.Cap is less than 200 cr.)
Ramesh Shrichand Damani : You mean the telecom share of it. Correct. And that is good. But market mostly values only operating earnings. It is not clear on holdings. Thanks for joining in. See you next week. Bye.
