Questions Jagjit Singh did not answer

Jeet James (Thu Aug 7 1997 20:1 IST)
abhijit: Good to be on line with you Mr. Jagjit. I am an ardent fan of yours. The best album of yours to me was Miraj. Unfortunately haven't laid hands on the latest one. I began listening to ghazals when I first heard Apni Marzi Se. And since then I am hooked

MrsGupta (Thu Aug 7 1997 20:14 IST)
I really liked your Album "Love is Blind"

amit (Thu Aug 7 1997 20:19 IST)
Jagjit-ji, Good evening. What qualities are necessary, apart from a sound knowledge of shashtriya sangeet to become a good composer? Do you think these qualities are in-born or they can be gained by hard work only?

Preeti (Thu Aug 7 1997 20:29 IST)
Jagjitji, How difficult is the life of a ghazal gayak in India?

Guruji (Thu Aug 7 1997 20:29 IST)
jagjit, do you mean that i would have forgotten about what i heard before and won't recognise the fact that it is the same stuff, just in different packaging?

Indian (Thu Aug 7 1997 20:30 IST)
Jagjitji, Are you and Chitra doing a combined album in the near future?

MrsGupta (Thu Aug 7 1997 20:30 IST)
As u said Jagjit-ji Guruji should stick with bhangra and pop. Ghazals do not seem to be his piece of cake.

Akshay (Thu Aug 7 1997 20:34 IST)
hello jagjit singh how r u today? i just connected.

Raagini (Thu Aug 7 1997 20:35 IST)
Have you done a Special for the Golden Jubilee I-Day celebrations... ? What's the name,if you have.?

Akshay (Thu Aug 7 1997 20:38 IST)
hello Jagjit Singh r u there??? let me know if ur there ????

Indian (Thu Aug 7 1997 20:38 IST)
Jagjitji, Are you and Chitra doing a combined album in the near future?

Akshay (Thu Aug 7 1997 20:40 IST)
hello can somebody please respond and tell me if my messages are coming, and I would like to say HELLO to Jagjit Singh

Akshay (Thu Aug 7 1997 20:40 IST)
thank You Jagjit Singh

Guruji (Thu Aug 7 1997 20:48 IST)
Mrs Gupta, seems like ghazals is not your piece of cake or pastry really. ghazal is a form of poetry and not music.

Guruji (Thu Aug 7 1997 20:50 IST)
ever heard of 'Matla', 'Maqta', 'Beher', 'Kaafiyaa' and 'Radif' Mrs Gupta?

MrsGupta (Thu Aug 7 1997 20:51 IST)
Guruji, u seem to be a very naughty boy.

Guruji (Thu Aug 7 1997 20:53 IST)
so are you going to spank me Mrs gupta?

Queen (Thu Aug 7 1997 20:53 IST)
GURUJI... Thanks for sympathising . It is nice to experiment and improvise. But then the result of such experiments cannot be called ghazals, they become something else. However, good they might be. That was the point of my argument.

Guruji (Thu Aug 7 1997 20:54 IST)
just kidding mrs gupta. no offense. ;-)

coomi (Thu Aug 7 1997 20:55 IST)
Hi Jayesh! So you got on in time. There are more in the next few days

Guruji (Thu Aug 7 1997 20:56 IST)
jagjit, who is your favorite poet?

coomi (Thu Aug 7 1997 20:57 IST)
Who do you think will bear your mantle? Any shagird, in the wings?

Jayesh Godambe (Thu Aug 7 1997 20:58 IST)
DO u have any new music videos out?

Queen (Thu Aug 7 1997 20:59 IST)
I will tell Guruji. The Master is right Mr Guruji. We cannot argue with a talent like JAGJIT SINGH (beyond a point).

Guruji (Thu Aug 7 1997 21:0 IST)
jagjit, you are right. initially i was also making the same mistake of identifying the ghazal with the form of music commonly utilized to sing it. but it is such a common mistake and it is so apparent here why your experiments would fail because most of the people don't know the differentiation. anyhow, i was not criticizing you using different forms of music. i was more concerned with you using mediocre poetry and setting it in pospular music form.

coomi (Thu Aug 7 1997 21:1 IST)
Khuda Hafiz!

Guruji (Thu Aug 7 1997 21:1 IST)
queen, i agree. maybe we should not talk about only "ghazals" with jagjit because he is basically a "singer". so what if he sings mostly ghazals. that's niche marketing.

Rediff On The NeT (Thu Aug 7 1997 21:2 IST)
Mr Jagjit Singh has consented to answer all your questions, "regarding music and ghazals only", in due course you will get the answer. You can mail your questions to chat@www.rediff.co.in

It was nice to talking to u Jagjit-Ji and u too "raagini"- nice name BTW

neeru (Thu Aug 7 1997 21:36 IST)
Jagjit Ji, Why a lull in singing the famous poets? we are all waiting for a good collection of album from you with poetry of Ghalib, Shiv Batalvi and Qateel Shifai. Your earlier albums of the same poets are a lifetime treasure.

bobby (Thu Aug 7 1997 22:28 IST)
