The Air Commodore Jasjit Singh Chat

A N Donald (Wed Oct 1 1997 19:47 IST)
Good evening, Sir. Why do you think the Pakistanis have opened fire so many times in the past few months? What are they trying to achieve?

Karl (Wed Oct 1 1997 19:52 IST)
Sir: What is the reason that we do not attack Pakistan?

B N Barua (Wed Oct 1 1997 19:53 IST)
Sir, do you think there is a dichotomy within the Pakistani establishment? With the politicians taking a dovish line and the military-ISI combine wanting to take a provocative position?

Kapil (Wed Oct 1 1997 20:2 IST)
Mr Jasjit Singh: I do not understand one thing. Indian cricket team is playing in Pakistan at this momeent. And at the same time, Pakistani army is killing our civilians in Kashmir. How do the Pakistani operate, Are they not aware that the lives of Indian cricketers can be in danger by doing this?

B N Barua (Wed Oct 1 1997 20:3 IST)
Thank you for your kind response. But I cannot understand why we are taking this Pakistani provocation lightly. What do we gain by not rebuffing their assault in the strongest possible terms? Are we taking a meek position because of US pressure?

anurag (Wed Oct 1 1997 20:3 IST)
Is it not true that our defense industry has lacked the vision and has mostly been reactionary in terms of dictating what our foreign policy should be (militarily speaking) with both Pak & china.

Jeevan (Wed Oct 1 1997 20:5 IST)
Mr Jasjit Singh: Do you think it was a mistake by Ms. Indira Gandhi for not capturing the PoK after the 1971 war?? I feel, had we done that today there would have been no problem of Kashmir??

A N Donald (Wed Oct 1 1997 20:6 IST)
Do you think the economic crunch is affecting our defence preparedness, our ability to buy more advanced weapons?

DOVE (Wed Oct 1 1997 20:7 IST)
Air Cmde Jasjit Singh, Sat Sri Akal! I always wanted to know this answer: Do you think India could have done better in 1962 against China if we had used our Air Force right from the beginning? The day after the IAF was used, China called a ceasefire, hence the query.

sophine A (Wed Oct 1 1997 20:8 IST)
How is the Indian defence force placed as against Pakistan?

clion (Wed Oct 1 1997 20:12 IST)
.

DOVE (Wed Oct 1 1997 20:12 IST)
Sir, Even though legally India has not signed the CTBT, do you think we can today ever explode an nuclear bomb, unless there exists a substantial threat from across the borders?

Madhu Kumar (Wed Oct 1 1997 20:13 IST)
Mr Jasjit Singh: Do you think the ongoing peace talks between India and Pakistan can herald any positive results? Last week, Mr Gujral and Mr Sharif had a summit in New York to reduce tension on the Line of Control. But yesterday, Pakistan began heavy firing on Kargil. Don't you think bilateral dialogue to end the conflict is useless?

anurag (Wed Oct 1 1997 20:15 IST)
What is India's long term stragegy to combat the ballistic missles that Pak is acquiring from china? Will we be able to defend against a ballistic attack?

Kapil (Wed Oct 1 1997 20:18 IST)
Mr Singh: It is a shame that people like you advocate of Indian going nuclear when nearly 40 percent of our population is dying in hunger. Eeven after 50 years of our independence, our women in villages travel more than a km to fetch water and same is the case with Pakistan. Why don't you think of doing some constructive work rather than thinking of destructive??

DOVE (Wed Oct 1 1997 20:18 IST)
When do you think will the next war occur involving India? And against whom is it most likely?

anurag (Wed Oct 1 1997 20:19 IST)
Mr. Singh : I disagree that "no other nation has made as much progress" why look at Korea, Indonesia & Malaysia. They are much further ahead of us economically. There is less corruption, less poverty there. I do not agree with your assessment. Militarily we seem to lack vision. Do you not feel that India needs a National Security Advisory committee to the Prime Minister that can help in foreign Policy matters. Our military seems to be too far removed from foreign policy matters.

DOVE (Wed Oct 1 1997 20:20 IST)
Sir, you have studied history, and history tells us that borders in the subcontinent have always changed every 200 years. So do you think that some time in the next century, the subcontinent will be reshaped politically?

Indian (Wed Oct 1 1997 20:23 IST)
Hello Mr.Singh. Where do you put Indian Air Force in the world rankings ?

TELPHI (Wed Oct 1 1997 20:23 IST)
Sorry for this aside, but Mr B N Barua, is your first name Biswaroop?

KV (Wed Oct 1 1997 20:25 IST)
Mr.Singh,do you see SAARC being a military bloc

Indian (Wed Oct 1 1997 20:26 IST)
How does the reply come through ? This is vague stuff.

John Taylor (Wed Oct 1 1997 20:26 IST)
Do you believe that we will not fight a full-fledged war with Pakistan or China again, and both countries will only involve us in low-level battles or proxy conflicts?

Indian (Wed Oct 1 1997 20:27 IST)
Could someone please help me out on where does the reply appear ??

anurag (Wed Oct 1 1997 20:28 IST)
indian >> The reply appears right in front of you. Unfortunately right now we aren't getting any *sigh*

Indian (Wed Oct 1 1997 20:30 IST)
Anurag>> what do ye think abut cats being used to fly aircrafts ?? got it??

Indian (Wed Oct 1 1997 20:32 IST)
Great to have u back Mr.Singh. Do u think we shouldn't have gone into Non-aligned movement ??

DOVE (Wed Oct 1 1997 20:33 IST)
Hey, a reply!

Kapil (Wed Oct 1 1997 20:36 IST)
Mr Singh: What you have to say about the state of Hyderabad which Indian army took over forcefully against Nizam's wish???

Jaswant Singh (Wed Oct 1 1997 20:37 IST)
Do you believe that we will not fight a full-fledged war with Pakistan or China again, and both countries will only involve us in low-level battles or proxy conflicts?

John Taylor (Wed Oct 1 1997 20:37 IST)
Do you believe that Pakistan's General Zia actually had a K-2 plan, to tie Indian down in Kashmir and Punjab?

Sandesa (Wed Oct 1 1997 20:39 IST)
Forget Shimla agreement , just go n attack the pakis... they'll be playing squash ..

Sandesa (Wed Oct 1 1997 20:45 IST)

Ann Spencer>> no We can't give Kashmir to those dull heads... headed by that pumpkin

deveri (Wed Oct 1 1997 20:51 IST)
Mr Singh! What is your advise to Indians abroad?

stanis (Wed Oct 1 1997 20:53 IST)
Ann Spencer, If the people of Califronia wanted to be part of Mexico would the US govt allow that? In that case should the Indian govt allow states to secede?

Sandesa (Wed Oct 1 1997 20:54 IST)
deveri >> Yahi Sandesa hai... go back to India and improve thy motherland

deveri (Wed Oct 1 1997 20:55 IST)
T

rang (Wed Oct 1 1997 20:58 IST)
Hi Sir, It is nice to talk to such a knowledgble person like you.

stanis (Wed Oct 1 1997 21:1 IST)
Mr Jasjit Singh, wouldn't it be better in the interest of both Pakistan and India to accept the Line of Control as the International Boundry? They could then quit shelling each other etc, and get on with other things.

Sandesa (Wed Oct 1 1997 21:2 IST)
deveri >> I didnt get ur machine level language part of the mesg

surya (Wed Oct 1 1997 21:3 IST)
Mr Singh thanks for your reply. This is exactly what I am worried of. We are straight jacketing ourselves by saying we are above this. The rest of the world cares two hoots. In fact the one argument I am stumped with my American friends is when they say "Why don't you retaliate? But then you are such pansies . You could have overpowered the British but didn't. ' Meanwhile men in uniform keep dying. You only realise the effects when it is someone you know. With close friends in the armed forces, I want them to have a fighting chance. We just seem to neglect them so much. eg. Since Sri Lanka we have had problems with IEDs. But I still have to see any mineproof vehicle tech . Even if those vehicle provide a10 % reduction it would be worth it. With the Airforce take the case of the AJT. I think it is criminal that the situation has come to this. I am sure at least 10 to 12 lives could have been saved if we had the AJT. Also one last suggestion: Why don't you guys have a web page? You are in a better position then the SAPRA and Bharat Rakshak people. Thanks in advance

Sandesa (Wed Oct 1 1997 21:4 IST)
yahoo ... Mr. Singh replied to ME .Iam feeling on top of the world ...... ((Singh))

rang (Wed Oct 1 1997 21:4 IST)
Sir, You can see this sort of planning when it concerns missiles.China has nukes in Tibet pointing to India.Pak has already deployed missiles.Saudi has got missiles with a range of 2500km.They also help Pak liberally.India does not think that these countries are threats.Indian govt knows very well that Saudi is funding the Militants in Kashmir. But you find no reaction from Indian bureaucrats. They never tell Saudis keep off...else we can also bleed you.It is time we started telling nations forcifully KEEP OFF.OTHERWISE WE can also do the same thing with INTEREST

Sandesa (Wed Oct 1 1997 21:6 IST)
I was joking Mr. Singh .. but I'll one day become a dictator and cure this great country of all evils ....beware laloos and Paswans

rang (Wed Oct 1 1997 21:6 IST)
Sandesa, Whatever problems with Mulayam, But he is forceful in his arguments.Calls a spade a spade. He has given the go ahead for deploying AGNI when the learned Narsimha capped it.

rang (Wed Oct 1 1997 21:6 IST)

deveri (Wed Oct 1 1997 21:6 IST)

Mr. Singh: Should the US deliver the F-16s to Pakistan and honor the deal (else return the money) ?

rang (Wed Oct 1 1997 21:10 IST)
Sir, See the CTBT issue. The Americans say now why you did not build plenty of bombs and missiles after 1974.Our policy makers and their ideals. They never care about the people and security. MOre than 2000 soldiers have died in Kashmir.Cant we retaliate. When Turkey can carry hot pursuit in Iraq against Kurds, why not we against Kashmir terrorists.I think PAk should be told about this.If we start doing this, the world is going to sit up and look.Just crying before the world PAK is creating problems is not going to help. The world looks for actions.

Sandesa (Wed Oct 1 1997 21:11 IST)
What do ye do when a Paki throws a grenade at you ? Pull the pin n throw it back ha ha ha try to laugh Mr. Singh

rang (Wed Oct 1 1997 21:11 IST)
Sir, Thankyou for the answer.

Sandesa (Wed Oct 1 1997 21:12 IST)
Singh >> Bye ....

rang (Wed Oct 1 1997 21:13 IST)
Sir, Why does India never study threat perceptions and plan its defence requirements. It policy makers(the bureacrats who know nothing about defence) always think about the relationships with other countries, the reaction of other countries and then do the requirements. Is this not very silly.

Sandesa (Wed Oct 1 1997 21:13 IST)
Thank me guys for enlightening the show ...

Sandesa (Wed Oct 1 1997 21:14 IST)
Thankless job this "joking"

Do u see a war between India and Pak in the next three years

jayesh (Wed Oct 1 1997 22:16 IST)
Mr. Singh, Two quick questions,please:- First regarding "Agni". It looks like that the "off again/on again" agni program is "on again". My question is that whether the powers that matter are aware that development of such a technology is a continual process and cannot be turned on and off like an electric bulb ? (after all persons retire, memory fade etc.) Secondly. I think that once the Taiwan issue is settled, China will launch a "low intensity" war on the "eastern" border while Pakistan will be in an all-out war on the western front. Can India handle such an scenerion. Of course, needless to say that if the answer is supposed to be classfied, then you can skip it. Thanks and best regards
