Malls have become an inevitable part of the retail boom all over the world.

Besides shopping, many malls offer the best entertainment and dining avenues to make shopping an enjoyable experience. For the record, four of the malls among the top 15 are in China.

1. South China Mall

China has some of the world's biggest malls. Opened in 2005, South China Mall in Donguan is the world's largest mall.

The mall has seven zones modelled on international cities, nations and regions, including Amsterdam, Paris, Rome, Venice, Egypt, the Caribbean, and California.

However, much of the retail space remains vacant.

Gross leasable area: 6.46 million sq ft.
Total area: 9.58 million sq ft.

2. Golden Resources Mall

The Golden Resources Mall in Bejing is the world's second largest mall.

Also known as 'Great Mall of China', it was the world's largest shopping mall during 2004-2005.

The mall has 230 escalators, more than 1,000 shops and a huge space for restaurants. It also has a skating rink.

Gross leasable area: (6 million sq ft.
Total area: 7.3 million sq ft.

3. The Dubai Mall

The Dubai Mall is the world's largest mall in terms of total area. It set a record on November 4, 2008, opening with about 600 retailers.

A skating rink, water world, gold souk makes shopping a great experience.

Gross leasable area: 6 million sq ft.
Total area: 12.1 million sq ft.

4. West Edmonton Mall

West Edmonton Mall, in Canada, is the largest shopping mall in North America. It was the world's largest mall for two decades from 1981 till 2004.

The mall receives 28.2 million visitors per year.

Gross leasable area: 3.77 million sq ft.
Total area:  5.3 million sq ft.

5. Istanbul Cevahir

The Istanbul Cevahir shopping and entertainment centre, opened on October 15, 2005 in Istanbul, Turkey, is the largest shopping centre in Europe.

There are 343 shops and around 50 restaurants. Besides 12 cinemas, including a private theatre, it has a bowling hall, a small roller coaster; and and glass roof carries the second biggest clock in the world.

Gross leasable area: 3.47 million sq ft.
Total area: 4.52 million sq ft.

6. Berjaya Times Square

Berjaya Times Square, a twin tower complex, houses a shopping centre and two five star hotels. Located in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, it was opened in October 2003. The 48-storeyed bulling stands at a height of 666 ft high.

Shopping, luxury accommodation, business, food and entertainment are its highlights. It also houses Asia's largest indoor theme park, Cosmo's World and Malaysia's first-ever IMAX 2D & 3D theatre.

Gross leasable area: 3.44 million sq ft.
Total area: 7.53 million sq ft.

The Eastwood Mall is one of the largest and most diverse shopping centres in Ohio. Opened in 1969, the total complex is one of the largest in the United States.

Eastwood Mall Complex has a 6,300-seater stadium, exposition centre, hotels and theatres.

9. Grandview Mall, Guangzhou

Grandview Mall in Guangzhou, China, has fashion stores and beautiful musical fountains.

Around half a million people visit the mall on holidays. An ice skating rink, an amusement park, and a five-star cinema are other attractions.

The King of Prussia Mall in Philadelphia, USA, opened in 1963 has fabulous stores and restaurants. It is a popular Philadelphia tourist attraction. Tourists comprise 20 per cent of the mall's shoppers.

The Mall of America in Minnesota, USA, is the third largest mall in North America, after the West Edmonton Mall, in Edmonton, Canada, and the King of Prussia Mall.

In the United States, it is the second largest mall in terms of retail space.

13. Centro Comercial Santafe, Bogota

The Centro Comercial Santaf is the second largest shopping mall in Bogota, Colombia, and the third in Latin America. It opened in 2006.

The mall has 485 shops, including an open foodcourt with 26 restaurants that has a seating for 1,500 persons. The mall also has 10 cinemas, 3,200 parking stalls, and an auditorium.

14. Centro Comercial Aricanduva 

The Centro Comercial Aricanduva mall in Sao Paulo, Brazil has 577 shops, 14 cinemas and 14,700 parking spaces.

It is the largest mall in Brazil and the fifth largest in North and South America combined.

Central World, In Bangkok, Thailand, has one of the biggest shopping centres in the world.

The building houses a hotel and an office tower.

Gross leasable area: 2.6 million sq ft.
