India's 20 most livable cities, Mumbai is No 1

Mumbai has been ranked as the most liveable city in India. The city has jumped two places to grab the top position on the Liveability Index 2013, says the Institute for Competitiveness.

The fourth edition of Liveability index has unveiled the list of top 50 liveable Indian cities. The Liveability index not only measures the quality of life of a region but also takes into consideration the other crucial factors of development essential for the citizens.

The model is based on eight core pillars that are demographic, education, health and medical standards, safety, housing option, socio-cultural-natural environment, economic environment, and planned environment. 

The bottom five cities on the liveability index 2013 are Agra, Raipur, Asansol, Kanpur and Patna.

Mumbai (Rank 1)

India’s financial capital has performed well on pillars such as demographics, health & medical standards.

One of India's wealthiest cities, it has an excellent transportation network and a good business environment. Mumbai lags in some parameters like housing, socio-cultural-natural environment and safety.

Three cities from Maharashtra are in the top 20 list.

Chennai, capital of Tamil Nadu has slipped one position from last year’s rank.

Chennai ranks high on planned environment, demographic, education, economic environment, health and medical standards. It scores low on safety, housing options.

The sixth most populous city in India, Chennai is a hub of automobile, technology, hardware manufacturing and healthcare sectors.

Chennai is also ranked as a global city by GaWC.

Hyderabad (Rank 3)

The bustling city of Hyderabad has slipped one position from their last year’s rank.

Also called the ‘City of Pearls’, it ranks high on demographic, education, health and medical standards and safety parameters. It scores low on housing options.

India’s fourth most populous city, Hyderabad is the fifth-largest contributor to India's GDP.

Hyderabad has transformed itself into cosmopolitan industrial service centre with the growth of information technology (IT), IT-enabled services (ITeS), insurance and financial institutions.

India’s IT capital, Bengaluru has shown tremendous improvements on the overall index.

Bengaluru has taken a jump of 6 places and is at 4th rank on the liveability index 2013.

It lags in health and medical standards, safety and housing options.

India’s capital city is back in the top 10 list of most livable cities.

It is one of the best cities in terms of education, health and medical standards, economic environment and communication respectively.

The city, however, needs to improve on the pillars of safety, and socio-cultural-natural environment to become the most liveable city in the country.

It scores high on demographic, health and medical standards, economic environment, and planned environment.

The city houses many public and private-sector corporations with major investments in sectors like steel, heavy engineering, mining, cement, pharmaceuticals, food processing, agriculture and electronics.
