At the Indian Auto Expo 2014, there have been some awesome cars on display since the gates were thrown open to general public on February 7. If you haven’t had a chance to visit the show, we take you through the best four-wheelers at the event.

Etios Cross

Toyota unveiled the Etios Cross at the ongoing Auto Expo 2014 saying that it will be launched in May 2014.

The Etios Cross is built on the same platform that underpins the Etios and Etios Liva hatchback and has been launched in South America.

Etios Cross

The Etios Cross will be powered by the same engines that the sedan and hatchback use - the 1.5-litre petrol engine that develops 90 hp, a 1.2-litre petrol engine that produces 80 hp and a 1.4-litre diesel engine that puts out 69 hp.

It measures 3,895 mm in length, ducking under the four-meter length to extract excise duty benefits, 1,735 mm in width and 1,555 mm in height with a wheelbase of 2,460 mm.

Etios Cross

The pseudo-crossover will get rear window defogger, centrally mounted tachometer and speedometer unit with a digital clock, MacPherson struts at the front and torsion beam setup at the rear.

It also gets height adjustable driver seat, leather wrapped steering, audio system with Bluetooth, USB, Aux-in, CD player and remote control, steering mounted audio controls and OVRMs with indicators.

Maruti Swift Volt customised

Sporting a red contrast roof and a dual-tone paint job, the Swift Volt displayed is powered by the 1.2-liter K-Series petrol engine.

The headlight cluster is seen featuring projector lights and a dark tint, while the area surrounding the grille is painted in black.

Maruti Swift Volt customised

Featuring an extensive body kit with low-set skirts and multi-spoke alloy wheels, we find the wing mirrors of the Volt particularly interesting with their almost concept-car like design.

Towards the rear, we became a huge fan of the dual exhaust pipes which are neatly integrated in the aggressively-styled bumper. The interior is similar to the road-going version with the exception of racing seats.

All in all, the Swift Volt sports a tasteful modification which we would like to see the company offer as accessories in the very least.

Maruti Swift Range Extender

Tucked away in a small hall housing hybrid vehicles at the Auto Expo 2014 was the Maruti Swift Range Extender.

The Swift Range Extender is a plug-in hybrid that houses both a 658 cc petrol engine and a 73 hp electric motor.

Maruti Swift Range Extender

According to Maruti Suzuki India’s internal tests, the Swift R.E gets a combined fuel efficiency of 48.2 kmpl, while its pure electric range is around 25.5 kmpl.

The Swift R.E is powered by an inline 3-cylinder 658 cc petrol engine and a permanent magnet synchronous motor that develops 73 hp.

Verito electric sedan

Mahindra showcased the Verito electric sedan at the Auto Expo this year. At the 2012 edition of the Expo, the Verito electric was showcased, but the car displayed at the 2014 Auto Expo is the facelifted model, with the dimensions and interior shared with the petrol-powered sibling.

The Verito electric was caught testing in Bangalore recently, hinting that Mahindra may soon launch the vehicle, it can be the company’s second electric vehicle in showrooms.

Verito electric sedan

According to the official claim, the car takes seven hours for a full charge (a fast charge takes an hour) and has a maximum range of 80 km. The top-speed is rated at 85 km/h.

Apart from the Verito electric, Mahindra Reva launched an updated version of its e2o small car. The e2o, with its Quick2Charge technology which uses a DC Fast Charging system, can be fully charged in under 60 minutes. A 15 minute charge will provide a range of 25 km.

Audi A3 Sedan

The A3 Sedan is offered with three engine options in Europe - 1.4L TFSI, 1.8L TFSI and 2.0L TDI.

The 1.4-litre TFSI makes 140 hp and 250 Nm and is paired to a seven-speed automatic transmission, the 1.8-liter TFSI makes 180 hp and 250 Nm and is paired to the same gearbox, while the 2.0-liter TDI churns out 150 hp and 320 Nm and is matched to a six-speed manual gearbox. A3 Cabrio

Audi showcased the top-less version of the A3 at the Auto Expo. Unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show last year, the new A3 Cabriolet is based on the sedan’s MQB platform and measures 4.42 meters in length and comes with a wheelbase spanning 2.6 metres.

The soft cloth roof is stretched using a kinematic mechanism made of magnesium-steel. It takes 18 seconds to close and can be operated at speeds of up to 50 km/h.

A3 Cabrio

While the A3 Cabrio is available with 1.4-litre and 1.8-litre petrol engines apart from a 2.0-litre diesel, Audi chose to display the higher capacity petrol variant at the Expo.

This 1.8-litre TFSI unit produces 180 hp and comes mated to a 6-speed manual transmission or a 7-speed S-Tronic automatic.

Audi will soon launch the A3 Sedan in India. There is a good possibility that the A3 Cabrio may be offered as a niche, lifestyle product.

Chevrolet Corvette

GM India brought along the new Corvette and the Camaro ZL1 to the Auto Expo.

The new Corvette is powered by a 6.2-liter V8 engine which produces 450 hp and 610 Nm of torque.

This enables the supercar to hit 100 km/h from rest in 4 seconds. Transmission is aided by a newly developed 7-speed manual gearbox which features Active Rev Matching technology to match the engine’s revs while upshifting/downshifting.

Piaggio NT3 concept

Piaggio unveiled the NT3 prototype at the Auto Expo, four years after it was first shown at the 2010 EICMA Moto Show in Milan.

The NT3 seats features four wheels and three seats with the driver placed forward in a central line.

The company decided to term the NT3 a “light 4-wheeler,” adding that it would be in a space that is of particular interest in India today.

The NT3 protoype is powered either by a 230 cc or 350 cc petrol engine. Piaggio has also developed a 350 cc hybrid powertrain for the four-wheeler.

The NT3 has a top speed of 80 kph, returns up to 33 kmpl and has a benchmark exhaust figure of 70 g CO2/km.
