Railways revenue up 25% from freight traffic

TrainRailways have posted over 25 per cent growth during the first six months of the ongoing fiscal from the freight traffic.

It generated Rs 39,888.95 crore (Rs 398.88 billion) from freight traffic during April-September 2012 as compared to Rs 31,802.31 crore (Rs 318.02 billion) during the corresponding period last year, registering an increase of 25.43 per cent, said a Railway statement issued on Friday.

The revenue was earned from carrying 481.45 million tonnes of commodity-wise freight traffic during this period as compared to 459.24

million tonnes carried during the corresponding period last year, the statement said.

In September alone, the PSU behemoth earned Rs 6040.96 crore (Rs 60.4 billion), out of which Rs 2509.01 crore (Rs 25.09 billion) came from transportation of 36.10 million tonnes of coal, the statement said.

It earned Rs 518.07 crore (Rs 5.18 billion) from transportation of 8.20 million tonnes of iron ore for exports, steel plants and for other domestic user, Rs 575.41 crore (Rs 5.75 billion) from 8.01 million tonnes of cement and Rs 488.20 crore (Rs 4.88 billion) from 3.57 million tonnes of foodgrains, the statement said.
