College sweethearts, Anita and Suresh are tying the knot in December 2013. They heard the horror stories of newly married receiving 20 photo frames, 15 table lights, a dozen crockery sets and a room full of bouquets.

They decided they would be different. Their wedding card said: "Please donate to our favourite charity. For details visit HelpYourNGO.com"

There is an increasing trend among young couples and their families in India not to accept gifts during weddings in urban India. This puts invitees in a bit of a fix as they would like to show their love and support to the couple.

Using the western concept of a wedding registry, many couples are directing the attention of their friends and relatives to a donation registry and encourage them to give directly to their favourite charity in lieu of a gift.

Selecting a deserving NGO can be a challenge for many. Annual Reports give a flavour of activities but not the financial scorecard of an NGO. Even when the NGOs do give details, a lay person finds the format difficult to understand. HelpYourNGO.com, has been established to promote transparency in the social sector.

HYNGO wishes to serve the needs of the growing number of socially-conscious young adults who would like to help give money for various causes but don't know the genuineness of the charities and the people running the NGOs. HYNGO, effectively, encourages philanthropy in India.

Donors can make informed donation decisions by finding answers to questions such as ‘Is this NGO spending the money it gets from donation efficiently?' on the HelpYourNGO website.

Over 200 NGOs are currently listed on the website with plans to list 1,000 NGOs by March 2015. Donors find it easy to access and evaluate NGO financials and can compare key data points across NGOs before they make their decision on where to donate.

The founders of HelpYourNGO.com are Ajit Dayal, I. V. Subramaniam and Rahul Goel. HelpYourNGO is spearheaded by Pradeep Mahtani (CEO), a Chartered Accountant.
