Mercedes-AMG E63S is indeed a very safe saloon

January 09, 2020 10:00 IST

The regular E-Class and the E63 feel like two different animals altogether, one excels in comfort and the other simply excites the senses like no other sedan in the market currently, it’s not only fast but also has a distinct character, which doesn’t want you to stop driving it.

The E-Class is India’s favourite luxury sedan and Mercedes-AMG has upped the ante with the E63S.

While Mercedes sells the LWB of the E-Class in India, the E63 is based on the short wheelbase model and with higher S version, it adds another shot of madness to this super saloon.

When we drove it on the track, we were in disbelief by its thrust, so a practical road test was only expected.

The Mercedes-AMG E63S has all the necessary demeanour that is expected from a super-sonic luxury saloon.

The Germans never fail at creating a well-measured balance between brash and sophistication and the E63S is no exception.

The E-Class, in every way, looks elegant and the sporty elements are subtle yet effective.

The front looks brilliant with sporty bumpers, two-slatted grille and the numerous creases on the bonnet.

The rear is highlighted by large bumpers, lip spoiler and quad exhausts.

Also, the E63S is the short-wheelbase version of the E-Class.

As a result, it looks smaller, tighter and lighter.

Add to that a matte grey finish and those sexy alloys, the E63S is like a little black dress. Perfect for any occasion.

The dashboard layout is similar to the standard E with some changes.

You get an all-digital instrument cluster which makes it look new-age and cool.

The quality, as always is top notch. From the Burmester speakers to the nifty clock, the interior of this AMG is an inspiring fusion of old meets new.

It is comfortable, refined, loaded with equipment and characterful.

The cabin might not feel as airy as the regular E-Class and because it is all-black and the smaller wheelbase means less space in the rear.

The seats are very supportive, the ones at the front, in particular.

The Mercedes-AMG E63S is powered by a 4.0-litre bi-turbo V8 motor that produces 612 HP and 850 Nm.

This results in a 0-100 km/hr time of just 3.4 seconds with the top speed restricted to 250 km/hr.

You can purchase the AMG Driver’s package to up the limit to 300 km/hr.

There is no denying that this is a fast car and when we drove it on the Buddh, we were surprised by the acceleration.

Some lag is present lower down but the moment the turbos spool up, the E63 races to the horizon.

The motor revs at a fanatic pace and redlines at 7000 RPM.

The 9-speed MCT gearbox is quick too.

The engine has got a raw and entertaining soundtrack reminiscent of an American muscle car.

There is a manual mode which works well, for it won’t upshift unless you command.

The car averages 4 km/l but with 80-litre fuel tank, the range is decent.

The E63 gets driving modes like Comfort, Sport, Sport+ and Race.

The Race mode turns it into a beast giving maximum response for the throttle input.

Although the E63 has put on weight with four-wheel drive, it gets Drift mode which lets you drift by using rear wheel power only.

However, activating the Drift mode is a tedious process.

You really have to have made your mind!

The ride quality is pretty good despite the low-profile wheels.

The Mercedes-AMG E63S does a great job over bad roads and the air suspension ensures the lift function on broken roads and low height at high speeds.

The AMG uses steel-discs as standard with Carbon Ceramics as option offering incredible stopping power.

Eight airbags and a host of electronics make it a very safe saloon.

The fantastic build and a 5-Star Euro NCAP rating are additional assurances.

The Mercedes-AMG E63S proves once again that the Stuttgart based automaker deserves the back to back championships it has won in Formula 1.

The regular E-Class and the E63 feel like two different animals altogether, one excels in comfort and the other simply excites the senses like no other sedan in the market currently, it’s not only fast but also has a distinct character, which doesn’t want you to stop driving it.
