Maruti Suzuki Baleno

The most fuel efficient hatch in the country is the Maruti Suzuki Baleno.

With an excellent mileage of 27.39kmpl in diesel and 21.4kmpl in petrol version, the Baleno clearly prods ahead of its rivals in the fuel efficiency department just like it does in the other aspects.

It gets a 1.2-litre K12 petrol engine and a 1.3-litre diesel motor mustering maximum power of 84PS / 115Nm and peak torque of 75PS / 190Nm, respectively.

The premium hatch is loaded up to the gills with features like projector headlamps, daytime running lights, 7 inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, steering mounted music controls, etc.

Maruti really need to be applauded for making ABS with EBD and dual front airbags as standard across all variants of the Baleno.

Honda Jazz

Mileage: Petrol - 18.7kmpl ' Diesel - 27.30kmpl

Price: Rs 5.96 – 9.28 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi)

Next in the list is i-DTEC engine-powered Honda Jazz.

Though the car isn’t selling through the roof, it still offers impressive mileages of 27.30kmpl and 18.7kmp with its diesel and petrol motors, respectively.

Equipped with a 1.5-litre diesel engine, it produces maximum output of 98.6bhp and 200Nm of peak torque.

The 1.2-litre petrol engine-powered Jazz yields 88.7bhp of max power along with max torque of 110Nm.

While the petrol engine is either mated to a 5-speed manual transmission or a CVT automatic gearbox, the diesel gets only a 6-speed manual transmission.

Besides its appealing looks, the Jazz is a super spacious car with decent list of features.

Tata Tiago

Tata Motors’ Tiago has been garnering impressive numbers since its launch, courtesy its mature yet contemporary styling, spacious interiors, aggressive pricing and an excellent fuel economy.

The Tiago plonks in a 1.2-litre Revotron petrol engine and a 1.05-litre Revotorq diesel motor.

The former variants return a fuel economy of 23.84kmpl while the latter consumes fuel at 27kmpl.

It gets a host of features like integrated music system, chilled glovebox, electric mirrors, multi-drive modes - Eco and City, 8-speaker sound system developed by Harman.

It can be categorised as one of those value for money car offering a bit of everything – style, space, performance, mileage and affordability.

Maruti Ignis

Mileage:  Petrol – 20.89kmpl ' Diesel - 26.8kmpl      

Price: Rs 4.56 – 8.08 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi)

The unorthodox car from the country’s largest passenger carmaker, the Maruti Suzuki Ignis was launched with a target to appeal millennials.

Powered by a 1.3-litre DDiS diesel engine, it pumps out top power of 74bhp and peak torque of 190Nm.

Its petrol powered trims extract power from a 1.2-litre VVT petrol engine developing 82bhp of max power and a max torque of 113Nm.

Both the engines are mated to a five-speed manual or an AMT transmission.

Boasting unconventional looks, the Ignis has 180mm of ground clearance and a higher seating position for a commanding view of the road ahead.

However, the standard dual airbags, ABS with EBD and ISOFIX child seat mounts are a welcome feature.

Moreover, the Ignis is the first car to feature a diesel plus automatic combo in the sub-Rs 10 lakh bracket.

Ford Figo

Mileage: Petrol – 18.16kmpl 'Diesel - 25.83kmpl

Price: Rs 4.73 – 7.70 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi)

The Ford Figo carries Aston Martin inspired front grille and is a perfect example of how you imbibe contemporary looks without overdoing it.

The American hatch is pulled by a 1.2-litre petrol engine and a 1.5-litre diesel engine.

The former returns a mileage of 18.16kmpl with power figures of 86.8bhp and 112Nm, whereas the latter extracts 25.83kmpl with max output of 99bhp and 215Nm.

Both the motors are mated to a five-speed manual transmission.

The petrol, however, also gets a six-speed automatic transmission as an option.
