Nifty declines marginally by 6.6 points

Pivotal prices declined on sustained selling pressure and lack of buying support from financial institutions on the National Stock Exchange on Monday.

The market opened on a buoyant note, but shares could not maintain their opening levels following profit booking at the higher level by the bull operators and common investors.

The Nifty opened higher at 1165.50 points and touched the day's high of 1177.50 points. Later, the NSE-50 Index hit a low of 1153.85 before closing at 1156.95 points, suffering a loss of 6.6 points as against the previous close of 1163.55 points.

The Midcap Index closed at 1276.05 points over the last trading day's close of 1276.70 points, losing 0.65 points.

The total turnover on the exchange was Rs 29.4 billion involving 79.3 million shares.

Reliance registered the highest volume of business at Rs 12.7 billion, followed by ITC Rs 9.5 billion, SBI-N Rs 1.7 billion, Tata Tea Rs 1.1 billion, ACC Rs 665.2 million, TISCO Rs 517.9 million, Castrol Rs 492.2 million, Hind Lever Rs 291.5 million, ICICI Rs 284.6 million, TELCO Rs 212.8 million, Bajaj Auto Rs 162.6 million, L and T Rs 141.5 million, Colgate Rs 133.1 million, MTNL Rs 129.5 million, ICICI Bank Rs 118.1 million, Satyam Comp Rs 101.1 million, Infosys Tech Rs 98.6 million, Rel Capital Rs 96.2 million, BSES Rs 78.5 million, BHEL Rs 68.7 million, Digital Equip Rs 53.3 million, HDFC Rs 37.1 million, LML Rs 31.9 million, Dr Reddy Rs 30.8 million and Aptech Rs 2.72 million.
