NSE reopens; Nifty gains 19.85 points

Pivotals gained smartly on good buying support from speculators and institutional investors as trading resumed smoothly on the National Stock Exchange on Thursday.

The market opened after a gap of four trading sessions; it was last open on October 1. The exchange was forced to suspend trading due to the total failure of the INSAT-2D satellite on October 1 evening.

Speculators actively participated in the market and concentrated at the Reliance counter and made heavy purchases throughout the day. The scrip gained by 6.22 per cent to Rs 383.35 over the previous close of Rs 360.90. The total turnover on the NSE reported during the day was at Rs 16.2 billion.

Reliance topped the list of turnover by registering the highest turnover of Rs 7.6 billion, followed by ITC Rs 5.8 billion, and others like SBI, Tata Tea and Bajaj Auto.

Reflecting the trend, the NSE-50 Index opened at 1119.10 points, touched the day's high of 1135.95, declined to the day's low of 1118.65 and later closed at 1134.55 points, netting a gain of 19.85 points over the previous close of 1114.70 points.

Similarly, the Midcap Index drifted higher by 4.85 points to 1260.15 points over the previous close of 1255.30 points.

Hectic trading was also witnessed at the counters of TISCO, Hind Lever, ICICI, Infosys, Colgate, Larsen and Toubro, Nicholas Piramal, Digital Equipment, HDFC, Satyam Comp, HPCL, BSES, Reliance Capital, and Ponds.

The top five gainers were Reliance, Bajaj Auto, BHEL, HPCL and BSES Ltd. The top losers were Indian Rayon, Mahindra and Mahindra, Gujarat Ambuja Cement, Mangalore Refineries and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL) and ITC.
