Nifty gains on
high turnover

The business volume on the National Stock Exchange recorded high on the last day of current settlement cycle as pivotal prices recovered modestly on speculative buying support today.

The NSE-50 Index opened steady at 981.10 points, touched a day's high of 1015.20 points before closing down to 1010.70 points, showing a net gain of 29.45 points over yesterday's close of 981.25 points.

The Midcap Index closed at 1147.05 points as against the previous close of 1129.70 points gaining 17.35 points. The total turnover rose to Rs 22.4 billion involving 77 million shares.

The ITC registered highest turnover of Rs 12.9 billion followed by SBI-N Rs 2.7 billion, RIL Rs 2.5 billion, Tata Tea Rs 793.9 million, Castrol Rs 505.5 million, TISCO Rs 323.2 million, ACC Rs 285.5 million, Hind Lever Rs 284.6 million, TELCO Rs 278.3 million, Ranbaxy Rs 145.2 million, MTNL Rs 132.2 million, BHEL Rs 121.4 million, Satyam Comp Rs 110.3 million, Bajaj Auto Rs 108.6 million, Softsolint Rs 79.8 million, Hero Honda Rs 77.7 million, L&T Rs 67.7 million, Bank of Baroda Rs 64.9 million, Infosys Tech Rs 55.7 million, LML Rs 53.5 million, ONGC Rs 52.6 million, ICICI Rs 44 million, Ponds Rs 41.7 million, BSES Rs 36.5 million, P&G Rs 34.2 million.

The top gainers were BHEL which rose to Rs 339.20 from Rs 314.75, Bajaj auto moved up to Rs 591.85 from Rs 554.80, Reliance to Rs 157.50 from Rs 148.30, Rel Capital to Rs 53.05 from Rs 50, Castrol to Rs 664.55 from Rs 631.60. The losers were SBI-N which declined to Rs 220.45 from Rs 221, Thermax decreased to Rs 193.75 from Rs 194.20 and Indian Hotels came down to Rs 604.50 from Rs 605.15.
