NSE-50 Index

Nifty gains to go up 17.55 points

After moving in narrow range, pivotals gained smartly on the National Stock Exchange following good buying support from institutional investors today.

Reflecting the trend, the NSE-50 (Nifty) index opened at 1061.65 points, touched the day's high of 1081.50, fell to touch day's low of 1060.20, and later closed at 1079.00 by gaining 17.55 points against the previous close of 1061.45 points.

The Dollar NSE-50 (Defty) index closed higher by 14.30 points to 953.45 against the previous close of 939.15 points and the Midcap index gained by 9.65 points to 1179.00 over the previous close of 1169.35 points.

The total turnover on the NSE amounted to Rs 11 billion and net traded quantity was 46.2 million.

ITC topped the list of turnover by registering the highest volume of Rs 346.80 million, followed by Tata Tea Rs 1.3 billion, State Bank of India Rs 1.1 billion, Reliance Rs 985.3 million and TELCO Rs 646.7 million.

Hctic activity was witnessed at the counters like Castrol Rs 408.8 million, ACC Rs 338.6 million, L&T Rs 294.6 million, TISCO Rs 256 million, LML Rs 230.1 million, Hind Lever Rs 199.8 million, Colgate Rs 196.5 million, MTNL Rs 183.4 million, Corp Bank Rs 115.3 million, BHEL Rs 100.3, Bajaj Auto Rs 91 million, IPCL Rs 74.5 million, BPL Rs 67.3 million, Infosys Tech Rs 55.4 million, Glaxo Rs 55.1 million, VSNL Rs 43.5 million, ICICI Rs 37.7 million, BSES Rs 37.1 million, HDFC Rs 29.6 million and Satyam Comp Rs 27.4 million.

Among the top five gainers, TELCO firmed up by 8.87 per cent to Rs 300.60, IPCL gained by 6.40 per cent to Rs 72.35, Arvind Mill up by 5.65 per cent to Rs 89.80, Colgate closed higher by 5.60 per cent to Rs 263.10 and Orient Bank gained by 5.03 per cent to Rs 65.80.

Among the major losers, IndoGulf declined by 2.54 per cent to Rs 36.45, Castrol down by 1.15 per cent to Rs 739.95, Rel Petro drifted lower by 0.85 per cent to Rs 23.35, Cochin Ref moved down by 0.41 per cent to Rs 158.50 and Guj Ambuja lost by 0.29 per cent to Rs 274.15.
