Sensex stays steady

Marketmen attributed the weak spell to bearish sentiments in the world markets and the fall in the rupee value against the dollar.

They said that due to these factors, the market players preferred to stay away from the market.

Leading domestic players like Unit Trust of India and some made purchases and supported the market well, leading BSE brokers said.

Reflecting the trend, the BSE Sensitive Index opened at 3340.15, touched the day's high of 3383.32, fell to touch a day's low of 3320.67 and later recovered partially to close at 3329.27, showing a minimal gain of 0.13 point over the previous close of 3329.14 points.

The broad-based BSE 100 Index closed at 1450.87 points, showing a marginal gain of 1.93 points over the previous close at 1448.94 points.

The BSE-200 and Dollex Indices closed at 324.95 and 136.17 points as against the previous close at 324.86 and 137.20 points respectively.

The total turnover on the screen-based trading system reported during the day was Rs 8.8 billion.

Tobacco giant ITC topped the list of turnover by registering highest turnover of Rs 3.8 billion, followed by Reliance Rs 1.2 billion, State Bank Rs 857.6 million, Tata Tea Rs 510.2 million and Castrol Rs 488.4 million.

Hectic activity was observed at the other counters like ACC Rs 214.4 million, TELCO Rs 212.1 million, TISCO Rs 204.4 million, Bajaj Auto Rs 129.4 million, MTNL Rs 86.2 million, Hind Lever Rs 79.2 million Mah and Mah Rs 74.2 million, ICICI Rs 71.8 million, Sesa Goa Rs 66.1 million and Colgate Rs 60.3 million.
