BSE director, ex-chief Kampani dead

Mahendra Kampani, director and former president of the Bombay Stock Exchange died early on Tuesday morning in an accident. He was 59.

Kampani, who was chairman of Jamnadas Morarjee Financial Limited, had gone out for his usual morning walk on Marine Drive in south Bombay. While he was heading home, he was hit from behind by a speeding taxi. He sustained injuries in the lower back and was rushed to Bombay Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Kampani had become a member of the BSE in 1976 and was elected director in 1982. In 1986-87, he became vice-president, and in 1987-88, he was elected as president of the country's premier stock exchange.

He was held high-ranking posts in several companies including Ispat Industries Ltd (formerly known as Nippon Denro), Dewan Housing, BOI Shareholding Ltd, Times Guarantee Finance Ltd, KJMC Finance Ltd, Sterling Financial Services Ltd, and Bombay Silk. He was also a committee member of the Securities and Exchange Board of India.
