Sensex crosses 4500 mark, gains further 83 points

Pivotals flared up further in the Bombay Stock Exchange as the bull run continued for the second consecutive day on Tuesday on the country's premier course. The BSE sensitive index crossed the important mark of 4500 and zoomed further up by about 83 points.

Frenzied buying by speculators and good buying support by the foreign institutional investors mainly in the index-based scrips lifted the Sensex up to the further high, the marketmen said.

Encouraged with an impressive half-yearly results by the Hindustan Lever Limited, the market participants made heavy buying in select scrips throughout the day, they said.

The FIIs made heavy purchases at the counters of TISCO, Reliance, ITC, State Bank of India, and MTNL.

Reflecting, the bullish phase, the BSE Sensex opened at 4477.50, which was also the day's low, touched the day's high of 4548.79, and ended at 4548.02, showing a net gain of 82.65 points over the previous close of 4465.37 points.

Similarly, the BSE-100 index moved up by 33.87 points to 1979.71 against the previous close of 1945.84 points.

The BSE-200 and dollex indices firmed up further by 6.86 and 3.25 points to 439.97 and 204.95 points against the previous close of 433.11 and 201.70 points respectively.

The unaudited half-yearly results announced by country's lubricant giant Castrol also boosted the market sentiments at the BSE, leading BSE brokers said. They further said that both the HLL and Castrol registered handsome gains during the course of trading.

The Sensex has gained by 357 points during last eight trading sessions.

The total turnover on the BSE rose to Rs 14.5277 billion. The tobacco giant ITC topped the list by registering highest turnover of Rs 3.9778 billion, followed by Reliance Rs 2.7516 billion, SBI Rs 1.7501 billion, TISCO Rs 750 million and Colgate Rs 480.8 million.

Hectic activity was witnessed at the counters of Castrol India Rs 472 million, ACC Rs 468.9 million, Tata Tea Rs 367.3 million, Hind Lever Rs 266.2 million, TELCO Rs 224.1 million, MTNL Rs 147.2 million, Hind Petrol Rs 137.5 million, Reliance Cap Rs 136.3 million, Larsen and Toubro Rs 113.6 million, and Tata Chem Rs 112.1 million.

Among the issues, Bajaj Auto firmed up by Rs 7.75 to Rs 934.75, BPL up by Rs 6.50 to Rs 98.75, Castrol by Re 1 to Rs 775.25, Glaxo gained by Rs 2.20 to Rs 488.50, Hind Lever moved up by Rs 21.70 to Rs 1537.70, Hindalco by Rs 12.25 to Rs 1167, ITC up by Rs 38.25 to Rs 585, Ponds by Rs 25 to Rs 2034.50, and Reliance by Rs 9.75 to Rs 374.

Market leader State Bank also gained by Rs 9.50 to reach Rs 338.25, TELCO by Rs 3.50 to Rs 399.50, and TISCO by Rs 1.25 to 223.24.

National Stock Exchange

Pivotals flared up further on the National Stock Exchange on Tuesday following good buying support from foreign institutional investors and speculators on the last day of trading settlement.

Reflecting the bullish phase, the NSE-50 index opened at 1250.50, touched the day's high of 1275.45, declined to the day's low of 1249.76 and later closed at 1273.15, showing a net gain of 22.75 point against the previous close of 1250.40 points.

Similarly, the midcap index moved up by 16.30 points to 1370.05 over the previous close of 1353.75.

The total turnover on the NSE amounted to Rs 23.0298 billion. Tobacco giant ITC stood first in the list of turnover by registering the highest turnover of Rs 9.0638 billion, followed by Reliance Rs 3.4824 billion, SBI Rs 1.9066 billion, TISCO Rs 1.3704 billion and ACC 1.355 billion.

Other actively-traded scrips were Tata Tea Rs 1.091 billion, Castrol 477.5 million, TELCO Rs 420.6 million, Hind Lever Rs 329.7 million, BSES Rs 107.1 million, Colgate Rs 185.1 million, Tata Chem Rs 168.6 million, HPCL Rs 168.4 million, ICICI Rs 159.3 million, GE Shipping Rs 106.1 million, MTNL Rs 99 million, Bajaj Auto Rs 86.5 million, IFCI Rs 68.7 million, Bank of Baroda 6 pd up Rs 65.8 million, Bank of India Rs 59.2 million, Ponds Rs 50.7 million, Gujarat Ambuja Rs 57.7 million, BHEL Rs 50.7 million, and Ranbaxy Rs 48.1 million.

The top five NSE-50 gainers were Indo Gulf Fert, Rel Capital, Cochin Refin, ACC, and Tata Chem, while the top five losers were Asian Paints, ICICI, Indian Hotels, Essar Steel and Grasim.

Meanwhile, at the Over The Counter Exchange of India, the composite index opened at 126.64 and closed at 123.45 showing a decrease of 3.28 over its previous day's close of 126.73 points.

The total turnover reported during the day was at Rs 4.958 million, involving 266,000 shares and debentures. Major contribution was from listed equity at Rs 4.727 million.
