The growth in the colour television industry in 1999-2000 was led by rural areas on account of a record rabi harvest and the increase in the overall agricultural production during the previous year. The agricultural production in 1999-2000 on the other hand was -2.2 per cent and the current year looks bleaker still with drought in many states and forecasts of deficient monsoons. Therefore, there is absolutely no prospect of the continuation of a rural-led growth in 2000-2001. The revival of growth rates across population strata between 1998-99 and 1999-2000 is very evident in the data above. Back <<
