M A Chidambaram passes way at 81

Chairman of MAC Group of Companies, M A Chidambaram, died late Wednesday night in Madras. He was 81.

He is survived by his wife, son A C Muthiah, who is the vice-chairman and president of SPIC, and daughter Seetha Chidambaram.

MAC, as he was popularly known, was a corporate legend in his own lifetime. His love for sports in general and cricket and hockey in particular is well-documented. The famous cricket stadium at Chepauk, Madras, is named after him. His son Muthiah is the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India and vice-president of the Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry or FICCI.

Chidambaram was associated with various sports bodies. He was also mayor of Madras in 1955. He was the honorary consul-general of the Philippines and also honorary colonel in the Indian territorial army.
