New govt department to offer conveniences for NRIs

Email this report to a friend

India's foreign affairs ministry is constituting a new department to address the problems of the Indian diaspora.

The plan is to improve coordination among various ministries and departments so that Non Resident Indians or NRIs and Persons of Indian Origin avail of the benefits of the government's policies. A database on India would be created for the Indian diaspora.

The Ministry for External Affairs told the parliamentary standing committee on foreign affairs that the new department would try to set up offices at important missions, particularly in the Gulf countries. A very large number of Indian workers are settled in the Middle East.

This, the government believes, would help boost NRI investments in India.
