Budget Session of Parliament stormy

BUDGET
2000
The second and final phase of the Budget Session of Parliament commenced today and tended to be stormy over several issues raised by the Congress and other opposition parties.

On Sunday, the Congress, Rashtriya Janata Dal and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) said they will demand recall of Bihar Governor Vinod Chandra Pandey for sanctioning prosecution of Chief Minister Rabri Devi and RJD supremo Laloo Prasad Yadav.

They will be supported by the CPI (M), RJD, Republican Party of India, Bahujan Samaj Party, Samajwadi and some other opposition parties to the chagrin of members of the treasury benches.

The other issues to be raised by the opposition to grill the government are price rise, reduction in subsidies on LPG, kerosene and ''weakening'' of the public distribution system. The major opposition parties in parliament are concerned over the ''deteriorating situation'' in Jammu and Kashmir and parts of the northeast.

Since they are of the view that the government has failed to restore peace in these regions, they will demand discussions on the latest developments there.

The government, however, is determined to go through legislative business, approval of the Finance Bill for 2000-2001 giving effect to the fiscal proposals for the current financial year and passage of the final stage of the Railway Budget for 2000-2001.
