Hyderabad, Goa, Ahmedabad airports to be designated 'international airports'

The Union cabinet today decided to designate existing airports in Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Goa, Amritsar, Guwahati and the Cochin airport at Nedumbassery as international airports on the recommendation of task force on infrastructure.

The cabinet, which met this morning under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, also decided to set up a new airport confirming to international standards on joint venture basis at Shamshabad near Hyderabad.

The existing airport at Hyderabad will be closed on the commissioning of new airport to which the status of the existing airport will be transferred in case it has all the necessary infrastructure facilities.

The Andhra government will select private consortia through international competitive bidding for designing financing, building, operating and maintaining the new airport at Shambhabad.

The new airport at Hyderabad will solve the problem of congestion at the existing airport and will lead to growth in industrial and tourism sector.

Declaration of domestic airports as international will offer improved connectivity, wider choice of services at competitive cost to the air-travelers resulting in boost to international tourism and economic development of these regions.
