India to hike sum for rehabilitation of child labourers

The central government will increase the amount for rehabilitation of child labourers employed in hazardous industries from Rs 20,000 to Rs 25,000, said to Union Labour Minister Satya Narayan Jatia.

He also announced in Gwalior that an educational centre would be established at Gwalior under the National Child Labour Scheme, or NCLS, with an outlay of Rs 2.7 million. It would impart three years of primary education to the child labourers, he added.

At present around 72 such educational centres were functioning in the country under the NCLS.

About employing local residents in newly established industries, he said, "The government cannot force anybody."

Replying to a question, he said that the central government had received the Satyam committee report pertaining to employees' state insurance scheme. Its short-term recommendations would be implemented in a month, after due consideration.

Terming this insurance scheme as the world's biggest scheme, he said that it comprised 24 million families, whose 120 million members were being benefited from the scheme.

Jatia distributed the pensions under recently implemented pension scheme to around 5,500 labourers of J C Mills, which was closed eight years back. He said imparting necessary training to them would also rehabilitate the labourers.
