Equities fluctuate in a wide range; Nifty down 13 points to 1166.90

Share prices, after fluctuating in a wide range, drifted lower and ended with marginal losses on profit booking by bull operators on the National Stock Exchange today.

The market opened on a positive note, further moved up on foreign institutional investors' buying support, but later declined on selling pressure by bull operatoars.

Reflecting the downtrend, the S&P CNX Nifty opend higher at 1181 points, touched the high of 1201.30 points and slid to the low of 1166.90 points at close, declining by 13.35 points from 1180.25 points of the previous day's close.

The S&P CNX Defty also moved down by 11.25 points to 945.60 points from 956.85 points.

The S&P CNX 500 eased by 4.85 points to 797.24 points from 802.09 points while CNX Midcap 200 edged down by 0.49 points to 690.25 points.

However, the CNX Nifty Junior index flared up by 14.55 points to 2035.30 points from 2020.75 points of the previous day.

The market witnessed 390,416 trades, involving 116.58 million shares, with a total turnover of Rs 28.46 billion. The debentures traded were valued at Rs 3.87 million.

Today, 563 shares declined, 471 gained, 100 remained unchanged while 98 securities hit their price bands today.

The top S&P CNX Nifty losers were: IPCL which fell by eight per cent to Rs 108.65 from Rs 118.10, Hindustan Petroleum 7.99 per cent to Rs 274.50 (298.35), Arvind Mill 7.96 per cent to Rs 33.55 (36.45), Cochin Refineries 7.32 per cent to Rs 152 (164) and Tata Power 6.77 per cent to Rs 92.30 (99).

Today's top gainers were NIIT which improved by 7.92 per cent to Rs 1,975 (1830), ACC 7.36 per cent to Rs 189 (176.05), P&G 3.56 per cent to Rs 931 (899), Indian Hotel 2.95 per cent to Rs 345 (335.10), Great Eastern Shipping 2.36 per cent to Rs 26 (25.40).

Satyam Computers registered the highest turnover of Rs 5.15 billion, followed by Pentafour Software Rs 3.50 billion, SBI Rs 3.49 billion, Reliance Rs 2.44 billion, ACC Rs 1.04 billion, Ranbaxy Rs 1.03 billion, Tisco Rs 849.9 million, ITC Rs 831.6 million, Zee Telesystems Rs 694.1 million, L&T Rs 635.7 million, Silverline Rs 630.1 million, MTNL Rs 572.7 million and Rolta Rs 481.2 million.

The other actively traded counters were: Tata Tea Rs 441 million, Hindustan Petroleum Rs 410.1 million, Infosys Technologies Rs 396.4 million, NIIT Rs 374.2 million, Digital Equipment Rs 373.9 million, HCL-HP Rs 366.7 million, Telco Rs 341.6 million, Global Telesystems Rs 309.3 million, Sterlite Rs 204.5 million, BPL Rs 162.8 million and Square D Software Rs 160.7 million.
