Satyam, SBI, Tata Tea, Bajaj Auto hog the limelight; Sensex up 43 points to 3757.50

Pivotals gained further at the Bombay Stock Exchange on moderate buying support from foreign institutional investors and speculative buying from operators today.

The market opened on a firm note as the index made a start at 3729.75, higher from the previous close of 3713.18 points, touched the day's high of 3784.81 points. However, it fell sharply and touched the day's low of 3729.75 points, before closing at 3757.50 points, showing a net gain of 43.42 points as against the previous close.

Being the last day of the current settlement on the National Stock Exchange, the sentiment affected the market towards the fag end with the heavyweighted stocks witnessing marginal fall due to squaring up of positions of major players, dealers said.

However, moderate support from the foreign institutional institutions helped the market to maintain the upward trend, they said.

According to leading BSE brokers, the FIIs made purchases in Satyam Computers and State Bank of India while operators have reportedly made purchases in Bajaj Auto and Tata Tea.

The broad-based BSE-100 index rose by 9.37 points to 1653.42 points from the previous close of 1644.05 points.

The BSE-200 and Dollex indices gained by 2.49 and 0.98 points to 380.81 and 149.57 points as against the previous close of 378.32 and 148.59 points respectively.

Total turnover on the BOLT system reported during the day was stood at Rs 21.94 business.

Satyam Computer topped the list of turnover by registering the highest turnover of Rs 3.61 billion, followed by Pentafour Software Rs 2.85 billion, Tata Tea Rs 1.20 billion, ITC Rs 1 billion and SBI Rs 960.6 million.

Other actively traded counters were Ranbaxy Labs (Rs 135.6 million), ACC (Rs 566 million), Infosys Technologies (Rs 557.1 million), MTNL (Rs 532.3 million), Zee Telefilms (Rs 505.2 million), Reliance (Rs 443.1 million), L&T (Rs 310.8 million), Telco (Rs 291.5 million), Dr Reddy's (Rs 285.4 million) and BHEL (Rs 283.6 million).
