Special court hearing the security scam case headed by Bombay high court's Justice M S Rane today directed an independent inquiry to probe into the alleged illegal payment made to certain higher-ups, including former Congress treasurer and president Sitaram Kesri by prime accused Harshad Mehta.

The direction was given after the conclusion of the cross examination of another accused in Maruti Udyog Limited case and now now turned approver Mohan Khandelwaal by public prosecutor Mahesh Jethmalani today, on his allegations that he and Mehta had paid a large amount in a briefcase to the then prime minister (P V Narasimha Rao) and Kesri on separate occasions.

Khandelwaal, earlier in June 1993 had made a statement at the Central Bureau of Investigations office in New Delhi that Mehta and himself had visited the residence of Kesri and handed over cash amount in a VIP suitcase to a person, unknown to him, present at the residence.
