Equities suffer a moderate setback; Nifty down 17 points to 1318

NSE-50 Index

Equities suffered a moderate setback at the National Stock Exchange following profit sales by domestic institutional investors and local operators today.

The S&P CNX-Nifty index opened at 1335.55 points, touched a new all-time-high of 1367.95 points in the intra-day trading, fell to the day's low of 1310.45 points, before closing at 1317.70 points, 17.45 points or 1.30 per cent down from the previous close of 1335.15 points.

Dealers said that the discouraging results by steel giant Tisco affected market sentiment badly on the country's largest bourse. Tisco has recorded an 8.5 per cent drop in net profit during the first quarter of the current financial year to touch Rs 248 million as against Rs 271 million in the same period last year.

Select software shares like Infosys Technologies and Satyam Computers staged a rally along with select pharma and cement shares, dealers said.

The S&P CNX-500 index dropped by 18.02 points to 896.49 points as against the previous close of 914.51 points. The S&P CNX Defty fell by 14.45 points to 1055.40 points from the previous close of 1069.85 points.

CNX Nifty Junior moved down sharply by 45.90 points at 2078.05 points from the previous finish of 2123.95 points. The midcap-200 too was down by 17.18 points at 759.31 from 776.49 points.
