Downtrend, as operators exert selling pressure; Nifty down 7 points, 949.80

Equities declined on selling pressure from operators, who squared up their positions ahead of the end of trading cycle at the National Stock Exchange today.

Reflecting the downtrend, the S&P CNX Nifty Index opened at 954.35, touched the day's high of 956.65, fell to the day's low of 935 before closing at 949.80, showing a net loss of 7.25 points from the previous close of 957.05.

The CNX Nifty Junior fell by 6.05 to end at 1673.40. The S&P CNX Defty and the S&P CNX-500 closed lower by 5.90 and 2.85 points to end at 774.25 and 664.04 respectively. The CNX Midcap-200 also lost 3.44 points to close at 585.58 points.

The total turnover on the NSE reported during the day was Rs 25.36 billion, which came from trading in 98.1 million shares from 297,660 trades.

A total of 398 scrips advanced, 647 declined and 92 remained unchanged today while 85 securities hit their price bands during the course of trading.

Pentafour Software topped with the turnover list followed by Satyam Computers, ITC, Tata Tea, Telco, Zee Telefilms and Reliance.

FIIs and FIs / mutual funds were net buyers to the tune of Rs 810 million and 37.4 million respectively on the NSE.

The top gainers were NIIT, Cochin Refineries, Bajaj Auto, Hero Honda and Reliance Petrochemicals. The losers were Tata Tea, Infosys Technologies, Grasim, Telco and Bank of India.
